ust-Noticeable-Differences (JND) as a dead-band in perceptual analysis has been widely used for more than a decade. This technique has been employed for data reduction in hap tic data transmission systems by several researchers. In fact, researchers use two different JND coefficients that are JNDV and JNDF for velocity and force data respectively. For position data, they usually rely on the resolution of hap tic display device to omit data that are unperceivable to human. In this paper, pruning undesirable position data that are produced by the vibration of the device or subject and/or noise in transmission line is addressed. It is shown that using inverse JNDV for position data can prune undesirable position data. Comparison of the results of the proposed method in this paper with several well known filters and some available methods proposed by other researchers is performed. It is shown that combination of JNDV could provide lower error with desirable curve smoothness, and as little as possible computation effort and complexity. It also has been shown that this method reduces much more data rather than using forward-JNDV.

This paper presents a load frequency control scheme using electric vehicles (EVs) to help thermal turbine units to provide the stability fluctuated by load demands. First, a general framework for deriving a state-space model for general power system topologies is given. Then, a detailed model of a four-area power system incorporating a smart and renewable discharged EVs system is presented. The areas within the system are interconnected via a combination of alternating current/high voltage direct current links and thyristor controlled phase shifters. Based on some recent development on functional observers, novel distributed functional observers are designed, one at each local area, to implement any given global state feedback controller. The designed observers are of reduced order and dynamically decoupled from others in contrast to conventional centralized observer (CO)-based controllers. The proposed scheme can cope better against accidental failures than those CO-based controllers. Extensive simulations and comparisons are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

In a traditional anti-jamming system a transmitter who wants to send a signal to a single receiver spreads the signal power over a wide frequency spectrum with the aim of stopping a jammer from blocking the transmission. In this paper, we consider the case that there are multiple receivers and the transmitter wants to broadcast a message to all receivers such that colluding groups of receivers cannot jam the reception of any other receiver. We propose efficient coding methods that achieve this goal and link this problem to well-known problems in combinatorics. We also link a generalisation of this problem to the Key Distribution Pattern problem studied in combinatorial cryptography

There is now a substantial body of research examining the relationship between human resources (HR) and organisational performance. During the last decade, this research has focused on the impacts of ‘bundles’ of HR practices. While researchers have consistently found a significant relationship between HR systems and performance, the mechanisms that give rise to this relationship remain poorly conceptualised. Building on the work of Barney (1998), Ferris et al. (1998) and Bowen and Ostroff (2004) we suggest the social context in which such practices are implemented provide the basis for specifying these transmission mechanisms. Workplace climate provides a key social context that induces high levels of effort and dynamic efficiency. Using a large sample we find workplace climate significantly influences the relationship between HR systems and performance.

Long term evolution (LTE) is designed for high speed data rate, higher spectral efficiency, and lower latency as well as high-capacity voice support. LTE uses single carrierfrequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) scheme for the uplink transmission and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in downlink. The one of the most important challenges for a terminal implementation are channel estimation (CE) and equalization. In this paper, a minimum mean square error (MMSE) based channel estimator is proposed for an OFDMA systems that can avoid the ill-conditioned least square (LS) problem with lower computational complexity. This channel estimation technique uses knowledge of channel properties to estimate the unknown channel transfer function at non-pilot subcarriers.

Long term evolution (LTE) is the final step toward the 4th generation (4G) of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile networks. LTE uses orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) for the downlink transmission and single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) for uplink. OFDMA meets the 4G requirement for spectrum flexibility and enables cost-efficient solutions for very wide carriers with high peak rates. However, the potentially large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitting signals has limited its application. This high PAPR causes interference when the OFDM signals are passed through an amplifier which does not have enough linear range. In this article, we investigate a clipping based PAPR reduction method for LTE OFDMA systems. Simulation results show that the clipping method is reduced PAPR significantly which decreases as the number of clip and filtering level is increased. As a results, increase the mean transmit power, and improve the power amplifier efficiency. This comes at the outlay of complexity, efficiency as well as cost.

In this paper we address the problem of securing networked RFID applications. We develop and present a RFID security protocol that allows mutual authentication between the reader and tag as well as secure communication of tag data. The protocol presented uses a hybrid method to provide strong security while ensuring the resource requirements are low. To this end it employs a mix of simple one way hashing and low-cost bit wise operations. Our protocol ensures the confidentiality and integrity of all data being communicated and allows for reliable mutual authentication between tags and readers. The protocol presented is also resistant to a large number of common attacks.

The use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology can be employed for tracking and detecting each container, pallet, case, and product uniquely in the supply chain. It connects the supply chain stakeholders (i.e.; suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers/distributors, retailers and customers) and allows them to exchange data and product information. Despite these potential benefits, security issues are the key factor in the deployment of a RFID-enabled system in the global supply chain. This paper proposes a hybrid approach to secure RFID transmission in Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems using modified Wired Equivalent Encryption (WEP) and Rivest, Shamir and Adleman (RSA) cryptosystem. The proposed system also addresses the common loop hole of WEP key algorithm and makes it more secure compare to the existing modified WEP key process.

In this chapter the authors discuss the physical insight of the role of wireless communication in RFID systems. In this respect, this chapter gives a brief introduction on the wireless communication model followed by various communication schemes. The chapter also discusses various channel impairments and the statistical modeling of fading channels based on the environment in which the RFID tag and reader may be present. The chapter deals with the fact that the signal attenuations can be dealt with up to some level by using multiple antennas at the reader transmitter and receiver to improve the performance. Thus, this chapter discusses the use of transmit diversity at the reader transmitter to transmit multiple copies of the signal. Following the above, the use of receiver combining techniques are discussed, which shows how the multiple copies of the signal arriving at the reader receiver from the tag are combined to reduce the effects of fading. The chapter then discusses various modulation techniques required to modulate the signal before transmitting over the channel. It then presents a few channel estimation algorithms, according to which, by estimating the channel state information of the channel paths through which transmission takes place, performance of the wireless system can be further increased. Finally, the Antenna selection techniques are presented, which further helps in improving the system performance.

An automated laparoscopic instrument capable of non-invasive measurement of tip/tissue interaction forces for direct application in robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery systems_ is introduced in this paper. It has the capability to measure normal grasping forces as well as lateral interaction forces without any sensor mounted on the tip jaws. Further to non-invasive actuation of the tip, the proposed instrument is also able to change the grasping direction during surgical operation. Modular design of the instrument allows conversion between surgical modalities (e.g., grasping, cutting, and dissecting). The main focus of this paper is on evaluation of the grasping force capability of the proposed instrument. The mathematical formulation of fenestrated insert is presented and its non-linear behaviour is studied. In order to measure the stiffness of soft tissues, a device was developed that is also described in this paper. Tissue characterisation experiments were conducted and results are presented and analysed here. The experimental results verify the capability of the proposed instrument in accurately measuring grasping forces and in characterising artificial tissue samples of varying stiffness.

This paper deals with the practical aspects of reduced-order distributed functional state observers design for interconnected linear systems subject to time delays in the interconnections. Contrary to some estimation strategies which only take the ideal instantaneous output information into account, the proposed scheme incorporates output information that is inevitably encountered with time delays in the course of its transmission from the distanced subsystems. It is proved that such estimator possesses less restrictive existence conditions with the acceptance of measurement data from other interrelated subsystems. Upon the satisfaction of the established existence conditions, it will be demonstrated through a simple design procedure and simulation results that a feasible observer can be realized for a given numerical system.
