A class of new conjugated copolymers containing a donor (thiophene)−acceptor (2-pyran-4-ylidene-malononitrile) was synthesized via Stille coupling polymerization. The resulting copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, GPC, TGA, and DSC. UV−vis spectra indicated that the increase in the content of the thiophene units increased the interaction between the polymer main chains to cause a red-shift in the optical absorbance. Cyclic voltammetry was used to estimate the energy levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the band gap (Eg) of the copolymers. The basic electronic structures of the copolymers were also studied by DFT calculations with the GGA/B3LYP function. Both the experimental and the calculated results indicated an increase in the HOMO energy level with increasing the content of thiophene units, whereas the corresponding change in the LUMO energy level was much smaller. Polymer photovoltaic cells of a bulk heterojunction were fabricated with the structure of ITO/PEDOT/PSS (30 nm)/copolymer−PCBM blend (70 nm)/Ca (8 nm)/Al (140 nm). It was found that the open-circuit voltage (Voc) increased (up to 0.93 V) with a decrease in the content of thiophene units. Although the observed power convention efficiency is still relatively low (up to 0.9%), the corresponding low fill factor (0.29) indicates considerable room for further improvement in the device performance. These results provided a novel concept for developing high Voc photovoltaic cells based on donor-π-acceptor conjugated copolymers by adjusting the donor/acceptor ratio.

Background : We aimed to determine the role of skeletal muscle mitochondrial ATP production rate (MAPR) in relation to exercise tolerance after resistance training (RT) in chronic heart failure (CHF).

Methods and Results : Thirteen CHF patients (New York Heart Association functional class 2.3 ± 0.5; Left ventricular ejection fraction 26 ± 8%; age 70 ± 8 years) underwent testing for peak total body oxygen consumption (VO2peak), and resting vastus lateralis muscle biopsy. Patients were then randomly allocated to 11 weeks of RT (n = 7), or continuance of usual care (C; n = 6), after which testing was repeated. Muscle samples were analyzed for MAPR, metabolic enzyme activity, and capillary density. VO2peak and MAPR in the presence of the pyruvate and malate (P+M) substrate combination, representing carbohydrate metabolism, increased in RT (P < .05) and decreased in C (P < .05), with a significant difference between groups (VO2peak, P = .005; MAPR, P = .03). There was a strong correlation between the change in MAPR and the change in peak total body oxygen consumption (VO2peak) over the study (r = 0.875; P < .0001), the change in MAPR accounting for 70% of the change in VO2peak.

Conclusions : These findings suggest that mitochondrial ATP production is a major determinant of aerobic capacity in CHF patients and can be favorably altered by muscle strengthening exercise.

From the late 1940s until the late 1970s Melbourne was home to a dynamic Greek cinema circuit made up of some 30 different inner-city and suburban venues operated by a handful of vertically integrated exhibition/distribution businesses. Dionysos Films was amongst the first Greek film exhibition/distribution companies to form in Australia and from 1949 until 1956 it operated with little significant competition, establishing the parameters for a diasporic Greek film circuit that stretched across regional and metropolitan Australia and into New Zealand. This article measures the shadow cast by Dionysos Films (and its charismatic proprietor Stathis Raftopoulos) over the history of Antipodean Greek film experiences and the implications that this neglected aspect of Australian and Greek film history has for our understanding of the national cinemas in both countries.

In 2002, Tennis Australia commissioned a report into the experiences of elite female past players on leaving the professional tennis circuit. Australian players who were in the top 800 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) end of year rankings and who had left the professional circuit within the previous 15 years were asked by mail to respond to a questionnaire. The questionnaire asked players to describe their feelings about leaving the tour during the time leading up to leaving the tour to two years after retirement. The main findings of the study suggested that those who planned to leave the tour found the transition process easy, whereas those who did not plan to leave the tour found the process difficult. Most players (66%) did not regret leaving the tour, and, although the remaining players responded that they regretted leaving, none attempted a comeback. Tennis Australia has implemented strategies to assist current players on the professional tour based on the results of this study.

Transformerless inverters technology in photovoltaic systems offers many advantages, but there are some safety issues due to the solar panel parasitic capacitance. The parasitic capacitance value depends on many factors such as PV panels and frame structure, surface of the cells, distance between the cells, module frame, weather conditions (e.g., humidity) and the amount of dust covering the PV panel. Harsh climate like the one in the Central Queensland region is characterized by high temperature, high relative humidity. Due to the region’s high dew point, high humidity and heavy rain during the wet season, the water condensed over the PV array surface will affect the stray capacitance significantly and consequently, the system leakage current. Human safety in PV system is a key issue, which must be addressed when this technology is applied. Protection against electrical shock is essential while deploying such systems to avoid injury or loss of life. Furthermore, PV insulation varies with meteorological conditions such as, temperatures, humidity. Therefore, the protective circuit should have the capability to adapt to any changes in metrological variables. This paper explorers the effect of meteorological changes on the insulation parameters and leakage capacitance and design a tools for protection.

A membrane reactor allows for simultaneous separation and reaction, and thus, can play a good role to produce value-added chemicals. In this work, we demonstrated such a membrane reactor based on fluorite oxide samarium-doped ceria (SDC) using an external short-circuit concept for oxygen permeation. The fluorite phase was employed to impart its high structural stability, while its limited electronic conductivity was overcome by the application of an external short circuit to function the SDC membrane for oxygen transport. On one side of the membrane, i.e., feed side, carbon dioxide decomposition into carbon monoxide and oxygen was carried out with the aid of a Pt or Ag catalyst. The resultant oxygen was concurrently depleted on the membrane surface and transported to the other side of the membrane, favorably shifting this equilibrium-limited reaction to the product side. The transported oxygen on the permeate side with the aid of a GdNi/Al2O3 catalyst was then consumed by the reaction with methane to form syngas, i.e., carbon monoxide and hydrogen. As such, the required driving force for gas transport through the membrane can be sustained by coupling two different reactions in one membrane reactor, whose stability to withstand these different gases at high temperatures is attained in this paper. We also examined the effect of the membrane thickness, oxygen ionic transport rate, and CO2 and CH4 flow rates to the membrane reactor performance. More importantly, here, we proved the feasibility of a highly stable membrane reactor based on an external short circuit as evidenced by achieving the constant performance in CO selectivity, CH4 conversion, CO2 conversion, and O2 flux during 100 h of operation and unaltered membrane structure after this operation together with the coking resistance.

Traditional rectifier circuit can convert AC to DC, but some disadvantages can't be avoided, such as small output current, high power consumption, low conversion efficiency. This paper designs a new type of rectifier voltage-multiplier circuit named MR MOS circuit. It uses a low let-through resistance MOS tube to replace the conventional rectifier diode, and adds the voltage-multiplying factor to the synchronous input port. Therefore, it can improve the rectifier effect and increase the output voltage. By the simulation result of Synopsys Saber Platform, it shows that the new type circuit can implement the rectification and voltage-multiplying by the simulating output pulse voltage of nano fiber made in Deakin University as the source of excitation. It can provide the basic theoretical of the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) development, and has certain reference significance to the development of piezoelectricity technology. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications.

Through the conjunction of tetraphenylethylene and diketopyrrolopyrrole functionalities, a novel four-directional non-fullerene electron acceptor (denoted as 4D) was designed, synthesized and characterized. The new chromophore is highly soluble (for instance >30 mg mL(-1) in o-dichlorobenzene), thermally stable, and exhibits energy levels matching those of the conventional and routinely used donor polymer poly(3-hexyl thiophene). A power conversion efficiency of 3.86% was obtained in solution-processable bulk-heterojunction devices with a very high open circuit voltage of 1.18 V.
