In this work, a photochromic wool fabric has been prepared by applying a photochromic-dye hybrid silica sol-gel onto the surface of fabric. The photochromic fabric was found to have a very quick optical response. Two types of silica were used as the matrix material, and the type of silica had a small effect only on the photochromic performance, the fabric washing fastness, and water contact angle, but affected the fabric handle property considerably. The silica from a precursor containing a long alkyl chain showed very little influence on the fabric handle and better photochromic performance than that containing a phenyl group.

In this work, a silica sol prepared by co-hydrolysis and co-condensation of TEGS (Tetraethylrthosilicate) and alkyl silane under alkaline condition was applied to polyester, wool, and cotton fabrics. The water contact angle measurement indicated considerable increase in the surface hydrophobicity of the sol-treated fabrics. Five different alky silanes were used, namely methyltritthoxysilane (MTES), pheryl triethoxysilane (PTES), n-octyltricthoxysilane (OTES), hexadecyl trimethoxysilan (HDTMS), and tridecafluorooctyl triethoxysilane (FAS), and the water contact anglc (CA) for the coated fabrics ranged between 1300 and 174°. The alkyl silane used influenced the CA valuc, and the silica coating from FAS, HDTMS and PTES snowed CA value greater than ISO', indicating the formation of superhydrophobicity. The fabric coated by the fluorinated silica (TEOS/FAS) has a water contact angle as high as 174°. The treated polyester fabric showed a slightly higher CA value than the wool and cotton fabrics, under the same coating condition.
The coating surface was characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, FTlR, XPS and AFM. The results showed that silica nanoparticles with thc sizc in the range of 50-ISOnm werc formed in the cohydrolyzed silica sol, and these particles had a core-shell structure with many alkyl groups gathering on the surface region. The formation of superhydrophobic surface was attributed to the nano-structured surface coating with a low surface energy.

Photochromic surface coating on textiles may create new fashion opportunities. It also enhances the ultraviolet (UV) protection ability of the coated products. In this study, a spirooxazine dye and a silane that bears a long alkyl chain have been used to produce hybrid photochromic silica coatings on wool fabrics. Four stabilisers are added separately to the photochromic silica coatings to examine their influence on photostability and photochromic behaviour. It is found that the addition of UV stabilisers slightly reduces the photochromic response speed and photochromic absorption. However, the addition of UV stabilisers to the photochromic coating considerably improves the photochromic lifetime. Among the four UV stabilisers studied, the quencher results in the best improvement to photostability with the lowest reduction in photochromic absorption.

In this study, hybrid silica prepared by a sol-gel technique and doped with a photochromic dye was used to produce photochromic coatings on fabric surfaces. The coated fabrics showed a strong photochromic effect with very fast optical response speed. Good coating adhesion was obtained on wool fabrics. The photostability of the photochromic fabrics was improved by three different processes: adding a photo stabilizer, adjusting the surface wettability and sealing off the dye-containing pores with additional silica coating. Four UV stabilizers were added separately to the photochromic silica coatings to investigate their influence on the photostability and photochromic behaviour. The addition of UV stabilizers retarded the photochromic response and reduced photochromic absorption, but increased photochromic lifetime. Among the four UV stabilizers studied, the quencher resulted in the best improvement to the photostability with minimal reduction in the photochromic absorption. Increasing the hydrophobicity of the coating, and sealing-off the dye-containing pores were also found to improve photostability.

Though ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are an excellent UV absorber, their photocatalytic activity greatly limits the application areas of these particles. Under sunlight exposure, ZnO NPs used as a UV absorber can accelerate the wool yellowing process by generating free radicals. To reduce this photocatalysis effect, a physical barrier has been fabricated by coating the ZnO NPs with a silica layer (ZnO@SiO2), hence providing good UV-shielding with low photocatalytic activity. The structure and optical properties of ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and UV–Vis spectrum. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs was evaluated by photo-degradation of Rhodamine B. The ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs were applied to knitted wool fabrics using the dip coating method. The treated wool fabrics were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the photoyellowing level of treated fabrics after exposure under simulated sunlight was evaluated by a Datacolor Spectraflash spectrophotometer. The ZnO@SiO2 NPs demonstrated excellent protection of wool against photoyellowing.

This work was designed to investigate the ability of silica-coated ZnO (ZnO&SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) as ultraviolet (UV) absorbers for protecting pre-dyed polyester fabrics against photofading. Despite that ZnO NPs are excellent UV absorbers, their strong photocatalytic activity limits the application in UV protection. In this study, a silica layer was coated onto ZnO NPs to form a physical barrier between the ZnO and a polyester substrate, which allowed effective UV shielding while minimising the harmful effects of photocatalytic activity on the substrate. The structure and optical proprieties of ZnO&SiO2 NPs were observed. The bare ZnO and ZnO&SiO2 NPs were, respectively, applied to polyester fabrics coloured with three kinds of dyes by a dip coating method. The photofading level of treated fabrics after exposure under simulated sunlight was evaluated. The ZnO&SiO2 NPs exhibited excellent protection on pre-dyed polyester fabrics against photofading.

The use of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as ultraviolet (UV) absorbers for many organic substrates is limited because of the high photocatalytic activity of ZnO. In this study, a facile and efficient technique for the preparation of a hybrid material of silica-coated ZnO nanoparticles was used to reduce the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Monodispersed ZnO nanopartcles were prepared by wet chemistry and the particle surface was modified by tetraethylorthosilicate to form a silica coating via the Sto¨ ber method. ZnO samples, both before and after the coating process, were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scanning, infrared, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The effect of the surface modification on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO was studied by monitoring the degradation of Rhodamine B caused by photo-generated free radicals. The results implied that the photo-generation of free-radicals was strongly quenched by the presence of silica on the particle surface.

With the increasing hype surrounding what nanotechnology can actually deliver, research emphasis in this area needs to be placed on how nanotechnology can bring tangible benefits to existing industries and ordinary consumers. This paper gives selected examples of real world applications of nano-structured materials, including nano fibrous and particulate materials. It reviews recent research into nano-structured surface coating of textile substrates for enhanced functionalities, and the development of fine and uniform nanofibres for advanced applications. Emphasis has been placed on relevant research activities in the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation at Deakin University, Australia. In the nano-structured surface coating area, several examples of enhancing fabric performance and functionality are provided, including silica coating for photochromic textiles, superhydrophobic surface coating and transparent ZnO coating to reduce colour fading of textiles exposed to UV radiation. In the nanofibre area, these activities include: elimination of beaded fibres without increasing the average diameter of the electrospun nanofibres, electrospinning of side-by-side bi-component nanofibres, new insight into the evolution of fibre morphology in electrospinning and the electrospinning technology itself.

In the present study, titanium (Ti) samples were surface-modified by titania (TiO2), silica (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings using a sol-gel process. The bioactivity of the film-coated Ti samples was investigated by cell attachment and morphology study using human osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells. Results of the cell attachment indicated that the densities of cell attachment on the surfaces of Ti samples were significantly increased by film coatings; the density of cell attachment on HA film-coated surface was higher than those on TiO2 and SiO2 film-coated surfaces. Cell morphology study showed that the cells attached, spread and grew well on the three kinds of film-coated surfaces. It can be concluded that the three kinds of film coatings can bioactivate the surfaces of Ti samples effectively. Overall, Ti sample with HA film-coated surface exhibited the best bioactivity.

Photochromic fabrics were prepared using a coating solution containing photochromic dyes and silica sol-gel. The photochromic effect was rapid. The effect of three different post treatments on the optical and durability of the photochromic fabrics was evaluated. These included incorporating a UV stabilizer, increasing the surface hydrophobicity by fluorinating the pores, and blockading the dye-containing pores with additional silica coating. All the treatments improved photostability, without significantly affecting response/fading speeds.

Monodispersed silica shell / zinc oxide core composite nanospheres were prepared in an oil-in-water microemulsion system. By using cyclohexane as the oil phase and Triton X-100 as the surfactant, nanospheres with a high core loading level and high monodispersity were obtained. The silica coating greatly reduced the photoactivity of ZnO nanoparticles, offering safe and durable applications of ZnO as UV screening agents.

In this study, a hybrid silica sol-gel embedded with a photochromic dye has been applied to wool fabric to form a photochromic coating. The treated wool fabrics showed very quick photochromic response. Five different silanes have been used as the silica precursor, and the resultant coating showed slight differences in photochromic performance, fabric washing fastness, and surface hydrophilicity. However, the silica type had a considerable influence on fabric handle property. The silica matrix from the silane containing a long alkyl chain had a very little influence on the fabric handle and better photochromic performance than those from other different silane precursors.
