The effects of pyrrole, anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid (AQSA) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) concentrations, reaction time and temperature on the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole (PPy) - coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were investigated. With an increase in both the AQSA and FeCl3 concentrations, resistivity decreased to a point beyond which higher concentrations led to increased surface resistivity. Erosion of the polymer coating, in dynamic synthesis from continual abrasion, manifested as an exponential increase in the resistance of the coated textile substrate. This was not encountered in static synthesis conditions. Temperature affected the degree of surface and bulk polymerisation. The effect of polymerisation temperature on conductivity was negligible. Conductive polymer coating on textiles through chemical polymerisation enabled a smooth coherent film to encase individual fibres, which did not affect the tactile properties of the host substrate. The optimum FeCl3/pyrrole and AQSA FeCl3/pyrrole molar ratios were found to be 2.22 and 0.40 respectively.

Heat generation in fabrics coated with the conductive polymer polypyrrole was investigated. The PET fabrics were coated by chemical synthesis using four different oxidizing agent–dopant combinations. The samples from the four different dopant systems all show an increase in temperature when a fixed voltage is applied to the fabric. The antraquinone-2-sulfonic acid (AQSA) sodium salt doped polypyrrole coating was the most effective in heat generation whereas the sodium perchlorate dopant system was the least effective. The power density per unit area achieved in polypyrrole coated polyester–Lycra® fabric with 0.027 mol/l of AQSA acting as dopant was 430 W/m2. The power density per unit area achieved for the sodium perchlorate system, using the same synthesis conditions, was 55 W/m2.

Nanoparticulate TiO2 is of interest for a variety of technological applications, including optically transparent UV-filters and photocatalysts for the destruction of chemical waste. The successful use of nanoparticulate TiO2 in such applications requires an understanding of how the synthesis conditions effect the optical and photocatalytic properties. In this study, we have investigated the effect of heat treatment temperature on the properties of nanoparticulate TiO2 powders that were synthesised by solid-state chemical reaction of anhydrous TiOSO4 with Na2CO3. It was found that the photocatalytic activity increased with the heat treatment temperature up to a maximum at 600 °C and thereafter declined. In contrast, the optical transparency decreased monotonically with the heat treatment temperature. These results indicate that solid-state chemical reaction can be used to prepare powders of nanoparticulate TiO2 with properties that are optimised for use as either optically transparent UV-filters or photocatalysts.

In this paper, we address the problem of unknown input observer design, which simultaneously estimates state and unknown input, of a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems with time-delay. A novel approach to the state estimation problem of nonlinear systems where the nonlinearities satisfy the one-sided Lipschitz and quadratically inner-bounded conditions is proposed. This approach also allows us to reconstruct the unknown inputs of the systems. The nonlinear system is first transformed to a new system which can be decomposed into unknown-input-free and unknown-input-dependent subsystems. The estimation problem is then reduced to designing observer for the unknown-input-free subsystem. Rather than full-order observer design, in this paper, we propose observer design of reduced-order which is more practical and cost effective. By utilizing several mathematical techniques, the time-delay issue as well as the bilinear terms, which often emerge when designing observers for nonlinear discrete-time systems, are handled and less conservative observer synthesis conditions are derived in the linear matrix inequalities form. Two numerical examples are given to show the efficiency and high performance of our results.

In this paper, we consider a class of time-delay singular systems with Lipschitz non-linearities. A method of designing full-order observers for the systems is presented which can handle non-linearities with large-Lipschitz constants. The Lipschitz conditions are reformulated into linear parameter varying systems, then the Lyapunov–Krasovskii approach and the convexity principle are applied to study stability of the new systems. Furthermore, the observers design does not require the assumption of regularity for singular systems. In case the systems are non-singular, a reduced-order observers design is proposed instead. In both cases, synthesis conditions for the observers designs are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities which can be solved efficiently by numerical methods. The efficiency of the obtained results is illustrated by two numerical examples.

In this paper, we address the problem of observer design for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of delays and unknown inputs. The nonlinearities studied in this work satisfy the one-sided Lipschitz and quadratically inner-bounded conditions which are more general than the traditional Lipschitz conditions. Both H∞ observer design and asymptotic observer design with reduced-order are considered. The designs are novel compared to other relevant nonlinear observer designs subject to time delays and disturbances in the literature. In order to deal with the time-delay issue as well as the bilinear terms which usually appear in the problem of designing observers for discrete-time systems, several mathematical techniques are utilized to deduce observer synthesis conditions in the linear matrix inequalities form. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness and high performance of our results.

This study considers a novel application of electric vehicles (EVs) to quickly help reheated thermal turbine units to provide the stability fluctuated by load demands. A mathematical model of a power system with EVs is first derived. This model contains the dynamic interactions of EVs and multiple network-induced time delays. Then, a dynamic output feedback H∞ controller for load frequency control of power systems with multiple time delays in the control input is proposed. To address the multiple time delays issue, a refined Jensen-based inequality, which encompasses the Jensen inequality, is used to derive less conservative synthesis conditions in terms of tractable linear matrix inequalities. A procedure is given to parameterise an output feedback controller to guarantee stability and H∞ performance of the closed-loop system. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the proposed control method.

Mechanochemical processing of anhydrous chloride precursors with Na2CO3 has been investigated as a means of manufacturing nanocrystalline SnO2 doped ZnO photocatalysts. High-energy milling and heat-treatment of a 0.1SnCl2+0.9ZnCl2+Na2CO3+4NaCl reactant mixture was found to result in the formation of a composite powder consisting of oxide grains embedded within a matrix of NaCl. Subsequent washing with deionized water resulted in removal of the NaCl matrix phase and partial hydration of the oxide reaction product with the consequent formation of ZnSn(OH)6. The extent of this hydration reaction was found to decrease in a linear fashion with the temperature of the post-milling heat-treatment over the range of 400–700 °C. For a heat-treatment temperature of 700 °C, the SnO2 doped ZnO powder was found to exhibit significantly higher photocatalytic activity than either single-phase SnO2 or ZnO powders that were synthesized using similar processing conditions. The heightened photocatalytic activity of the SnO2 doped ZnO was attributed to its higher specific surface area and the enhanced charge separation arising from the coupling of ZnO with SnO2.

The results of recent investigation of the mechanochemical synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles are reviewed. It was demonstrated that, by selecting suitable chemical reaction paths, stoichiometry of starting materials and milling conditions, mechanochemical processing can be used to synthesise a wide range of nanocrystalline particles dispersed within a soluble salt matrix. Selective removal of the matrix phase by washing the resulting powder with appropriate solvents can yield nanoparticles of the desired phase. This technique has been shown to have advantages over other methods of producing nanoparticles in terms of low cost, small particle sizes, low agglomeration, narrow size distributions and uniformity of crystal structure and morphology.

This study reports a facile hydrothermal method for the synthesis of monodispersed hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanodiscs under mild conditions. The method has features such as no use of surfactants, no toxic precursors, and no requirements of high-temperature decomposition of iron precursors in non-polar solvents. By this method, α-Fe2O3 nanodiscs were achieved with diameter of 50 ± 10 nm and thickness of ~6.5 nm by the hydrolysis of ferric chloride. The particle characteristics (e.g., shape, size, and distribution) and functional properties (e.g., magnetic and catalytic properties) were investigated by various advanced techniques, including TEM, AFM, XRD, BET, and SQUID. Such nanodiscs were proved to show unique magnetic properties, i.e., superparamagnetic property at a low temperature (e.g., 20 K) but ferromagnetic property at a room temperature (~300 K). They also exhibit low-temperature (<623 K) catalytic activity in CO oxidation because of extremely clean surfaces due to non-involvement of surfactants, compared with those spheres and ellipsoids capped by PVP molecules.

Ball-milling and annealing is one effective method for the mass production of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). We report that the method has been modified to a boron (B) ink annealing method. In this new process, the nanosize ball-milled B particles are mixed with metal nitrate in ethanol to form an ink-like solution, and then the ink is annealed in nitrogen-containing gas to form nanotubes. The new method greatly enhances the yield of BNNTs, giving a higher density of nanotubes. These improvements are caused by the addition of metal nitrate and ethanol, both of which can strongly boost the nitriding reaction, as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis. The size and structure of BNNTs can be controlled by varying the annealing conditions. This high-yield production of BNNTs in large quantities enables the large-scale application of BNNTs.

The new ligand, [Fc(cyclen)2] (5) (Fc=ferrocene, cyclen=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane), and corresponding ZnII complex receptor, [Fc{Zn(cyclen)(CH3OH)}2](ClO4)4 (1), consisting of a ferrocene moiety bearing one ZnII-cyclen complex on each cyclopentadienyl ring, have been designed and prepared through a multi-step synthesis. Significant shifts in the 1H NMR signals of the ferrocenyl group, cf. ferrocene and a previously reported [Fc{Zn(cyclen)}]2+ derivative, indicated that the two ZnII-cyclen units in 1 significantly affect the electronic properties of the cyclopentadienyl rings. The X-ray crystal structure shows that the two positively charged ZnII-cyclen complexes are arranged in a trans like configuration, with respect to the ferrocene bridging unit, presumably to minimise electrostatic repulsion. Both 5 and 1 can be oxidized in 1:4 CH2Cl2/CH3CN and Tris-HCl aqueous buffer solution under conditions of cyclic voltammetry to give a well defined ferrocene-centred (Fc0/+) process. Importantly, 1 is a highly selective electrochemical sensor of thymidilyl(3′-5′)thymidine (TpT) relative to other nucleobases and nucleotides in Tris-HCl buffer solution (pH 7.4). The electrochemical selectivity, detected as a shift in reversible potential of the Fc0/+ component, is postulated to result from a change in the configuration of bis(ZnII-cyclen) units from a trans to a cis state. This is caused by the strong 1:1 binding of the two deprotonated thymine groups in TpT to different ZnII centres of receptor 1. UV-visible spectrophotometric titrations confirmed the 1:1 stoichiometry for the 1:TpT adduct and allowed the determination of the apparent formation constant of 0.89±0.10×106 M−1 at pH 7.4.

We report on the synthesis, characterisation, and physical and tribological properties of halogen-free ionic liquids based on various chelated orthoborate anions with different phosphonium cations, both without halogen atoms in their structure. Important physical properties of the ILs including glass transition temperatures, density, viscosity and ionic conductivity were measured and are reported here. All of these new halogen-free orthoborate ionic liquids (hf-BILs) are hydrophobic and hydrolytically stable liquids at room temperature. As lubricants, these hf-BILs exhibit considerably better antiwear and friction reducing properties under boundary lubrication conditions for steel–aluminium contacts as compared with fully formulated (15W-50 grade) engine oil. Being halogen free these hf-BILs offer a more environmentally benign alternative to ILs being currently developed for lubricant applications.
