A multilayer non-repudiation system: a Suite-B approach

 Security provisioning is an essential part in the design of any communication systems, which becomes more critical for wireless systems. The consideration and comparisons of security algorithms in various Open Systems Interconnection layers is a difficult task, because there are many performance metrics involved. The aim of this novel research article is to present research results for the design of a wireless system revolving around the practical and low-cost implementation of Suite-B algorithms in different layers. Suite-B, promulgated by the National Security Agency, is a set of cryptographic algorithms, including non-repudiation. The end results include the deployment of Suite-B algorithms at the application, transport, and network layers and the protocol flow at each layer.

A review of security protocols in mHealth Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN)

The popularity of smartphones has led to an increasing demand for health apps. As a result, the healthcare industry is embracing mobile technology and the security of mHealth is essential in protecting patient’s user data and WBAN in a clinical setting. Breaches of security can potentially be life-threatening as someone with malicious intentions could misuse mHealth devices and user information. In this article, threats to security for mHealth networks are discussed in a layered approach addressing gaps in this emerging field of research. Suite B and Suite E, which are utilized in many security systems, including in mHealth applications, are also discussed. In this paper, the support for mHealth security will follow two approaches; protecting patient-centric systems and associated link technologies. Therefore this article is focused on the security provisioning of the communication path between the patient terminal (PT; e.g., sensors) and the monitoring devices (e.g., smartphone, data-collector).

A novel energy-efficient cross-application-layer platform with QoS-security support

Security provisioning is an essential part in the design of any communication systems, which becomes more critical for wireless systems. Devising a quality of service (QoS) mechanism to coexist security algorithms is a daunting, yet inevitable task. The aim of this novel research article is to present a novel energy efficient, cross-layer-based application-layer wireless system with simultaneous security and QoS supports, which revolves around the practical and low-cost implementation of Suite-B cryptographic algorithms (promulgated by the National Security Agency) and detailed analyses of the associated complexities. The focus of this article is on the novel cross-layer mechanism and its effectiveness to handle QoS-enabled treatment while offering security enhancements.

The use of scoring rubrics to determine clinical performance in the operating suite

Summary : This research evolved out of the need to examine the validity and inter-rater reliability of a set of performance-based scoring rubrics designed to measure competencies within the operating suite.

Method : Both holistic and analytical rubrics were developed aligned to the ACORN Standard [Australian College of Operating Room Nurses Standard NR4, 2004. ACORN Competency Standards for Perioperative Nurses: Standard NR4: The Instrument Nurse in the Perioperative Environment. Australian College of Operating Room Nurses Ltd, Adelaide] and underpinned by the Dreyfus model (1981). Three video clips that captured varying performance of nurses performing as instrument nurses in the operating suite were recorded and used as prompts by expert raters, who judged the performance using the rubrics.

Results : The study found that the holistic rubrics led to more consistent judgments than the analytical rubrics, yet the latter provided more diagnostic information for intervention purposes. Despite less consistency, the Analytical Observation Form had sufficient construct validity to satisfy the requirements of criterion referencing as determined by the Item Separation Index (Rasch, 1960), including high internal consistency and greater inter-rater reliability when average ratings were used.

Conclusion : The study was an empirical investigation of the use of concomitant Analytical and Holistic Rubrics to determine various levels of performance in the operating suite including inter-rater reliability. The methodology chosen was theoretically sound and sufficiently flexible to be used to develop other competencies within the operating suite.

The clinical utility of a suite of continence assessment tools for use in residential aged care facilities

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, 80% of direct care in nursing homes in the USA is provided by workforce that has least formal education about patient care (1). This situation is echoed in Australian residential aged care facilities where the day-to-day management is largely provided by unregulated workers (i.e. nursing assistants, personal carers and nursing aides) and is overseen by registered nurses. Some facilities additionally have access to expert advice from continence nurse advisors. In order to assist the residential aged care workforce to provide continence care that is evidence-based, a team of researchers developed and trialled a suite of continence assessment tools that were mainly targeted to unregulated workers. This paper presents information on the development of the tools (Stage 1) and on their evaluation (Stage 2).
