The degree of new media technologies that are broadly available has changed considerably ill nearly two decades since they emerged. How do Indigenous art and craft micro-enterprises use these technologies today? What are their perceptions of it? There is a lack of current data about use of computer technology by Indigenous-owned art and craft enterprises. A current snapshot is needed of the use and consequences of new media technologies in these organisations. This paper reports on results from a 2006 survey of small Indigenous-owned arts enterprises across Australia, including for-profit and non-profit enterprises, those from metropolitan, regional and remote areas, and including both art centres and other types of arts enterprises. The data suggest a major change over the previous decade in the degree that small Indigenous art and craft organisations use and perceive new media technology.

Why do some entrepreneurs succeed while others fail in international competition? Perhaps it is better to turn the question around and ask, why is it that a particular country or economy becomes the home base for competitive globally-oriented entrepreneurs? What makes Australia a global leader in wine exports? How did New Zealand make it to global ranks in the creative industries? Why does Singapore have the most businessfriendly environment for entrepreneurs? Why is it “location, location, location”? One of the most powerful factors is the regulatory environment.

Asia-Pacific country-specific and region-specific regulations are diverse, and they seriously affect the climate for start-up entrepreneurs. They range from best-in-the world (e.g. Australia, New Zealand and Singapore) to the dreadful (Indonesia), according to the World Bank. Costs and profits can be affected as much by a government regulation as by a management decision. Fundamental entrepreneurial decisions--such as which lines of business to go into, which products and services to produce and introduce, which investments to finance, how and where to make goods and how to market them, and what prices to charge--are increasingly subject to governmental control.

In this short paper, we examine World Bank and Transparency International data on Asia-Pacific regulatory environments and make statements about how the economies compare to best practice. While I use data collected by other sources, I believe the added value comes through comparing and contrast the regulatory environments of our region in a justifiable and easily understood manner.

Micro-blogging services such as Twitter, Yammer, Plurk and Google Buzz have generated substantial interest among members of the business community in recent years. Many CEOs, managers and front-line employees have embraced micro-blogs as a tool for interacting with colleagues, employees, customers, suppliers and investors. Micro-blogs are considered a more informal channel than emails and official websites, and thus present a different set of challenges to businesses. As a positional paper, this paper uses a case study of a bogus Twitter account to emphasise security and ethical issues relating to (i) Trust, Accuracy and Authenticity of Information, (ii) Privacy and Confidentiality, and (iii) Scams and Frauds, when micro-blogs are used in the workplace. It also highlights the potential risks businesses are exposed to if employees use micro-blogs irresponsibly. The paper contributes to practice by providing suggestions on managing security and ethical risks associated with micro-blogging in the workplace. It contributes to research by building on existing research in trust and data privacy in electronic communication.

The problem of "model selection" for expressing a wide range of constitutive behaviour adequately using hot torsion test data was considered here using a heuristic approach. A model library including several nested parametric linear and non-linear models was considered and applied to a set of hot torsion test data for API-X 70 micro-alloyed steel with a range of strain rates and temperatures. A cost function comprising the modelled hot strength data and that of the measured data were utilized in a heuristic model selection scheme to identify the optimum models. It was shown that a non-linear rational model including ten parameters is an optimum model that can accurately express the multiple regimes of hardening and softening for the entire range of the experiment. The parameters for the optimum model were estimated and used for determining variations of hot strength of the samples with deformation.

Pillars were fabricated by focused-ion beam (FIB) in a dual beam scanning electron microscope (SEM, FEI Quanta 3D). A multi-step milling procedure was adopted to prepare the pillars using Ga+ ion beam operated at 30 kV. The beam current was reduced from 5 nA for coarse milling down to 50 pA for fine milling, to minimize the surface damage induced by the Ga+ ion beam. The pillars were imaged at 52° tilt angle by SEM prior to the microcompression tests.

The research describes a rapid method for the determination of fatty acid (FA) contents in a micro-encapsulated fish-oil (μEFO) supplement by using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic technique and partial least square regression (PLSR) analysis. Using the ATR-FTIR technique, the μEFO powder samples can be directly analysed without any pre-treatment required, and our developed PLSR strategic approach based on the acquired spectral data led to production of a good linear calibration with R2 = 0.99. In addition, the subsequent predictions acquired from an independent validation set for the target FA compositions (i.e., total oil, total omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA) were highly accurate when compared to the actual values obtained from standard GC-based technique, with plots between predicted versus actual values resulting in excellent linear fitting (R2 ⩾ 0.96) in all cases. The study therefore demonstrated not only the substantial advantage of the ATR-FTIR technique in terms of rapidness and cost effectiveness, but also its potential application as a rapid, potentially automated, online monitoring technique for the routine analysis of FA composition in industrial processes when used together with the multivariate.

A comparison between the elastic modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer nano composites predicted by classical micromechanics theories, based on continuum mechanics and experimental data, was made and the results revealed a great difference. To improve the accuracy of these models, a new two-step semi-analytical method was developed, which allowed consideration of the effect of the interphase, in addition to CNT and matrix, in the modeling of nanocomposites. Based on this developed method, the inuence of microstructural parameters, such as CNT volume fraction, CNT aspect ratio, partial and complete agglomerations of CNTs, and overlap and exfoliation of CNTs, on the overall elastic modulus of nanocomposites was investigated. ©2014 Sharif University of Technology. The use of public spaces can promote social cohesion and facilitate interpersonal interactions within the community. However, the ways racial and ethnic groups interact in public spaces can also reflect and influence informal segregation in the wider community. The present study aimed to examine patterns of intergroup contact within public spaces in Victoria, Australia through short-term observation in four localities. Data were collected on within-group, intergroup and absence of contact for people from minority and majority groups. A total of 974 contacts were observed. Findings indicate that in the observed public spaces, people from visible minority groups tended to have no contact with others or to interact with people from other ethnic/racial groups. In contrast, those from the majority group tended to interact predominately with other majority group members. This suggests that majority group members are more likely to ‘self-segregate’ in public spaces than those from minority groups.

The rapid development of virtual reality offers significant potential for skills training applications. Our ongoing work proposes virtual reality operator training for the micro-robotic cell injection procedure. The interface between the operator and the system can be achieved in many different ways. The computer keyboard is ubiquitous in its use for everyday computing applications and also commonly utilized in virtual reality systems. Based on the premise that most people have experience in using a computer keyboard, as opposed to more sophisticated input devices, this paper considers the feasibility of using a keyboard to control the micro-robot for cell injection. In this study, thirteen participants underwent the experimental evaluation. The participants were asked to perform three simulated trial sessions in a virtual micro-robotic cell injection environment. Each session consisted of ten cell injection trials and relevant data for each trial were recorded and analyzed. Results showed participants' performance improvement after the three sessions. It was also observed that participants intuitively controlled multiple axes of the micro-robot simultaneously despite the absence of instruction on how to do so. This continued throughout the experiments and suggests skills transfer from other keyboard based interactions. Based on the results provided, it is suggested that keyboard control is a feasible, simple and low-cost control method for the virtual micro-robot.

This paper discusses the design of a virtual reality (VR) training system for micro-robotic cell injection. A brief explanation of cell injection and the challenges associated with the procedure are first presented. This is followed by discussion of the skills required by the bio-operator to achieve successful injection, such as accuracy, trajectory and applied force. The design of the VR system which includes the visual display, input controllers, mapping strategies, haptic guidance and output data is then discussed. Initial evaluation of the VR system is presented including analysis and discussion based on conducted user evaluations. Finally, given the findings of the initial evaluation, this paper concludes that an effective haptically-enabled virtual cell injection training system is feasible, and recommendations for improvement and future work are given.

Three Instant Algae® (Reed Mariculture Inc., Campbell, CA, USA, 95008) products: (1) mono-cultured Isochrysis sp. (Haptophyceae) (Isochrysis 1800®); (2) mono-cultured Pavlova sp. (Haptophyceae) (Pavlova 1800®); and (3) mono-cultured Thalassiosira weissflogii (Bacillariophyceae) (TW 1200®) were used to feed sandfish (Holothuria scabra) larvae both singly and in ternary combination to assess their nutritional efficacy. Two-day auriculariae were held at a starting density of 0.3 mL-1 and were initially fed a daily ration equivalent to the dry weight of 10,000 cells mL-1 of Isochrysis 1800®. This ration was increased by the dry weight equivalent of 1000 cells mL-1 of Isochrysis 1800® per day as larval development proceeded. Post-settled larvae fed TW 1200® were significantly larger than those fed the ternary diet, Isochrysis 1800® or Pavlova 1800®. There were significant differences in the mean (±SE) survival of auriculariae and post-settled larvae between treatments and survival to settlement was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for larvae fed TW 1200® (13.7 ± 0.7%) alone. Laval development, competency and survival were significantly correlated with dietary levels of total protein, lipid and nitrogen-free extract (NFE), and with total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of the diets, and the levels of some specific fatty acids (FA). The proportion of late auriculariae with hyaline spheres (day 13), numbers of competent doliolariae (day 15) and the total length of post-settled larvae (day 21) were all positively correlated with dietary NFE and palmitic acid (16:0) contents, as well as dietary EPA: DHA ratio. This study is the first comprehensive assessment of the nutritional value of micro-algae concentrates for sandfish larvae based on their nutrient compositions. Our study confirms the feasibility of using commercially available microalgae concentrates as a sole food source for hatchery culture of sandfish, and is the first to report successful hatchery culture of H. scabra without using live micro-algae. All micro-algae concentrates used in this study proved nutritious for H. scabra larvae and supported normal growth and development and relatively high survival, through settlement. Use of commercially available micro-algae concentrates as a replacement for live micro-algae in sandfish hatcheries supports development of cheaper, simpler larval rearing protocols for this species. Statement of relevance: Hatchery culture of sandfish using micro-algae concentrates, without the use of live micro-algae, is a significant finding that supports development of cheaper, simpler larval rearing protocols for this species. Our study provides detailed nutritional compositional data for the products used and on this basis we were able to deduce new information relating to key nutrients for sea cucumber larvae.

Numerical study on the compressor stage of a KJ-66 micro gas turbine was conducted in this paper through both steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes. The study was conducted for the numerical prediction of micro gas turbine compressor performance at various operation conditions, with special attention given to the transient flow behaviors during compressor operation. The numerical results showed reasonable agreements with experimental data while providing predictions for the charting of compressor performance map at various operation speeds. The simulation results indicated that the increase of operation speed from 80 k r/min to 117 k r/min would leads to an increased peak total pressure ratio from 1.54 to 1.96, while decreasing the peak adiabatic efficiency from 0.73 to 0.55. This paper also provided discussion on details of transient flow field within the compressor stage as well as demonstrated the smooth flow transition through rotor–stator interactions.
