Feyerabend, 1975; Feyerabend, 1981 and Feyerabend, 1987 takes J. S. Mill’s On Liberty to support the proliferation of theories in science and to emphasize the fallibility of scientific knowledge. On Liberty, according to Feyerabend, contradicts and overthrows Mill’s major study of science, A System of Logic. Staley (1999) reads the 2 works of Mill as giving complementary accounts of science. The present author rejects these interpretations of Mill, arguing that A System of Logic and On Liberty are mutually compatible since On Liberty concerns the nature of non-scientific knowledge and the methods that Mill believes are appropriate to expanding and assessing that knowledge.

Digestive juice from the herbivorous gecarcinid land crabs Gecarcoidea natalis and Discoplax hirtipes exhibited total cellulase activity and activities of two cellulase enzymes; endo-ß-1,4-glucanase and ß-1,4-glucosidase. These enzymes hydrolysed native cellulose to glucose. The digestive juice of both species also contained laminarinase, licheninase and xylanase, which hydrolysed laminarin, lichenin and xylan, respectively, to component sugars. The pH optima of ß-1,4-glucosidase, endo-ß-1,4-glucanase and total cellulase from G. natalis were 4–5.5, 5.5 and 5.5–7, respectively. In the digestive juice from D. hirtipes, the corresponding values were 4–7, 5.5–7 and 4–9, respectively. The pH of the digestive juice was 6.69±0.03 for G. natalis and 6.03±0.04 for D. hirtipes and it is likely that the cellulases operate near maximally in vivo. In G. natalis, total cellulase activity and endo-ß-1,4-glucanase activity were higher than in D. hirtipes, and the former species can thus hydrolyse cellulose more rapidly. ß-1,4-glucosidase from G. natalis was inhibited less by glucono-D-lactone (Ki=11.12 mmol l-1) than was the ß-1,4-glucosidase from D. hirtipes (Ki=4.53 mmol l-1). The greater resistance to inhibition by the ß-1,4-glucosidase from G. natalis may contribute to the efficiency of the cellulase system in vivo by counteracting the effects of product inhibition and possibly dietary tannins. The activity of ß-1,4-glucosidase in the digestive juice of D. hirtipes was higher than that of G. natalis.

Laminarinase and endo-β-1,4-glucanase were purified and characterised from the midgut gland of the herbivorous land crab Gecarcoidea natalis and the crayfish Cherax destructor. The laminarinase isolated from G. natalis was estimated to have a molecular mass of 41 kDa by SDS-PAGE and 71 kDa by gel filtration chromatography. A similar discrepancy was noted for C. destructor. Possible reasons for this are discussed. Laminarinase (EC 3.2.1.6) from G. natalis had a Vmax of 42.0 µmol reducing sugars produced min–1 mg protein–1, a Km of 0.126% (w/v) and an optimum pH range of 5.5–7, and hydrolysed mainly β-1,3-glycosidic bonds. In addition to the hydrolysis of β-1,3-glycosidic bonds, laminarinase (EC 3.2.1.39) from C. destructor was capable of significant hydrolysis of β-1,4-glycosidic bonds. It had a Vmax of 19.6 µmol reducing sugars produced min–1 mg protein–1, a Km of 0.059% (w/v) and an optimum pH of 5.5. Laminarinase from both species produced glucose and other short oligomers from the hydrolysis of laminarin. Endo-β-1,4-glucanase (EC 3.2.1.4) from G. natalis had a molecular mass of 52 kDa and an optimum pH of 4–7. It mainly hydrolysed β-1,4-glycosidic bonds, but was also capable of significant hydrolysis of β-1,3-glycosidic bonds. Two endo-β-1,4-glucanases, termed 1 and 2, with respective molecular masses of 53±3 and 52 kDa, were purified from C. destructor. Endo-β-1,4-glucanase 1 was only capable of hydrolysing β-1,4-glycosidic bonds and had an optimum pH of 5.5. Endo-β-1,4-glucanases from both species produced some glucose, cellobiose and other short oligomers from the hydrolysis of carboxymethyl cellulose.

There is growing evidence that ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths play an important role in avian mate choice. One of the first experiments to support this idea showed that female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) prefer UV-reflecting males to males whose ultraviolet reflection has been removed. The effect was very strong despite little or no UV reflection from several plumage areas. However, it is not clear how the importance of the UV waveband compares to other regions of the bird-visible spectrum. We tested whether the response of female zebra finches to the removal of male UV reflection is greater than to the removal of other wavebands. We presented females with a choice of males whose appearance was manipulated using coloured filters. The filters removed single blocks of the avian visible spectrum corresponding closely to the spectral sensitivities of each of the zebra finch's single cone classes. This resulted in males that effectively had no UV (UV-), no short-wave (SW-), no medium-wave (MW-) or no long-wave (LW-) plumage reflection. Females preferred UV- and SW- males. LW- and MW- males were least preferred, suggesting that female zebra finches show the greatest response to the removal of longer wavelengths. Quantal catches of the single cone types viewing body areas of the male zebra finch are presented for each treatment. Our study suggests it is important to consider the role of the UV waveband in avian mate choice in conjunction with the rest of the avian visible spectrum.

The ideas of liberty presented in the important works of John Locke and John Stuart Mill, The Second Treatise of Government (1689) and On Liberty (1859), are often viewed as belonging to the same conceptual tradition, that of English liberalism. This thesis is an articulation of the diversity between the theories of liberty expressed by Locke and Mill in the Second Treatise and On liberty. \ am aiming to provide a corrective to the tendency to ignore or to gloss over very significant differences between the two men. The work concentrates on the philosophical aspects of each theory of liberty, arguing that they differ in four respects. These are; definitions of liberty; justifications of liberty; how much liberty and for whom they recommend it, and finally, who they believe threatens liberty and how this threat is to be curbed. It is the purpose of this thesis to show that in terms of these areas Locke and Mill are pursuing different ends. I conclude that Locke and Mill present strikingly different theories of liberty and cannot be thought of as belonging to the one conceptual tradition in terms of the definition, the justification, the prescription and the threat to liberty. Ultimately, I question the value of including Locke and Mill in the one conceptual tradition of liberty solely on the basis that they argue ‘freedom from.’

A 160 kDa enzyme with β-glucosidase activity was purified from the midgut Gland of the land crab Gecarcoidea natalis. The enzyme was capable of releasing glucose progressively from cellobiose, cellotriose or cellotetraose. Although β-glucosidases (EC 3.2.1.21) have some activity towards substrates longer than cellobiose, the enzyme was classified as a glucohydrolase (EC 3.2.1.74) as it had a preference for larger substrates (cellobiose<cellotriose=cellotetraose). It was able to synthesise some cellotetraose by the transglycosylation of smaller substrates – another common feature of glucohydrolases. The interaction between the glucohydrolase described here and the endo-β-1,4-glucanases described previously for G. natalis provides a complete model for cellulose hydrolysis in crustaceans and possibly in other invertebrates. After mechanical fragmentation by the gastric mill, multiple endo-β-1,4-glucanases would initially cleave β-1,4-glycosidic bonds within native cellulose, releasing small oligomers, including cellobiose, cellotriose and cellotetraose. The glucohydrolase would then attach to these oligomers, progressively releasing glucose. The glucohydrolase might also attach directly to crystalline cellulose to release glucose from free chain ends. This two-enzyme system differs from the traditional model, which suggests that total cellulose hydrolysis requires the presence an endo-β-1,4-glucanse, a cellobiohydrolase and a β-glucosidase

This study, reported by Gregory Stuart and colleagues, offers empirical evidence to support the hypothesis that perpetrators of domestic violence who receive a brief intervention to address alcohol use in addition to a 40-hour group batterer programme will not only consume fewer drinks (and on fewer days) than those who only receive the batterer programme, but will also be less likely to be aggressive and violent.Although these effects fade over time, these findings are significant in the context of an area in which the efficacy of many behaviour change programmes has yet to be demonstrated adequately [2], and in which there is a pressing need to develop more effective interventions.

This paper explores the production, destruction, and reproduction of the geopolitical spaces of Roman law in order to offer an analysis of Schmitt’s (selective) notion of Jus Publicum Europaeum and its relevance to the current “depoliticization” and “dejuridification” of the world. By adopting a historical and geopolitical approach that reaches the boundaries of legal systemology and political theology, the present contribution investigates the manipulative and instrumentalist use of the material object of Rome’s (universalist) competence, namely the “territory” as dominium of its political intervention, which was ultimately (and idealistically) aimed at avoiding the natural destiny of any living being: birth, maturity, and death. Attention is therefore paid to the Roman strategy of (ontological?) contamination of its mythical identity through the legal and sociopolitical administration and regulation of its geographical spaces in terms of (non-)cultural signification. Through the analysis of such concepts as “nomos,” “Großraum,” “Ortung,” and “Ordnung,” it is claimed that Schmitt voluntarily chose to identify the Jus Publicum Europaeum with the geopolitical order produced during the Age of Discovery and not with the “comprehensive” Roman spatial order. The reason for this choice may be identified in the distortive use of Rome’s social relations and political allegiances that lay at the core of its genealogical expansionism (and subsequent inevitable dissolution) since the conquest of Veius in 396 BC and the historical compromise between patrician nobility and plebeians in 367 BC.
