Focus group study of endometriosis: struggle, loss and the medical merry-go-round

Women with endometriosis experience a range of problems for which they may or may not be adequately supported. This paper reports on one aspect of a study conducted at the Epworth Hospital, Melbourne, to identify the information needs of women facing laparoscopy for endometriosis. A number of focus groups were conducted that provided women with a forum for communicating their experiences of endometriosis and laparoscopy. The findings include the experiences of 61 women who described the lack of support, the struggles and the losses involved in living with endometriosis. By far the worst experience that these women described was the encounter with health professionals and the ways in which their symptoms were trivialised and dismissed. There is a great deal for nurses to learn about the experience of living with endometriosis if they are to support women with this chronic illness in their search for well-being.

Adventures of punctuated equilibria : a struggle for authority in the evolutionary sciences

The theory of ‘punctuated equilibria’ was formulated by two paleontologists, Niles Eldredge and Stephen Gould, in 1972 and has been the focus of considerable controversy within the evolutionary sciences ever since. The primary intentions of this thesis are to relate the history of punctuated equilibria and to examine how it has affected evolutionary science. Several modes of analysis have been used to illuminate the history: The sociological perspectives of Pierre Bourdieu and Bruno Latour (who see scientific debate as a ‘struggle for authority’); Rhetorical analysis of some of the key documents; Communication with practising scientists via questionnaires and correspondence; Citation Analysis. Chapter 1 gives a short summary of the history and introduces the methods and socio-philosophical perspectives used to illuminate the history. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the rhetorical process by which Eldredge and Gould constructed the ‘punctuationist revolution’. Chapters 2, 3, 5 and 6 relate the history of punctuated equilibria.

I think it's a good idea, I just don't know how to do it : the struggle for PE reform in China

Among the many changes occurring across Chinese society in the early phase of Y2K is the construction and implementation of a new physical education (PE) curriculum. Not unlike recent changes in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, this process has seen a heightening of the emphasis on health. Presented within a wider framework for making the school curriculum more relevant, PE is more closely aligned with China’s emerging population health concerns around lifestyle practices of its youth. Foremost here are burgeoning social anxieties about decreased levels of physical activity, poor dietary practices, risk-taking tendencies, and a general shift in focus from ideology to skills.

This paper reports on a study undertaken to explore the perceptions of Chinese PE teachers and their engagement with the new PE & Health curriculum. The data reveals a number of structural, personal and cultural factors that work against PE teachers taking up the opportunities presented in the new curriculum. Prominent here are; low professional status, lack of resources, lack of training and the grip of deeply rooted cultural values.
