This series of photographs focuses on caves in Western Victoria that have a layer of colonial occupation; caves said to be inhabited by bush rangers, escaped convicts, shipwreck survivors and hermits. The photographer was drawn to a rich vein of sites associated with colonial myths of inhabitation. These include the escaped convict William Buckley; Miss Carmichael, survivor of the wreck of the Lochard in 1878; Bushranger Captain Melville, and elusive enigmatic Black Ranges hermit David Ross. The resulting photographs explore the sensory and psychological resonance of these extraordinary places, what they feel like and how they feed the imagination, the need to feel rooted, to feel at home. Her approach embraces the paradoxical ambivalence of this need and the complex process of negotiating our presence in the land.

This paper will focus upon the use of found objects in stop-motion animation. It will survey a number of found-object animated films, exploring how the viewer might closely identify with such objects in motion, as well as attributing to them multiple meanings. This analysis will be furthered through the consideration of an object-orientated phenomenological perspective, referencing Graham Harman and Martin Heidegger. It will also consider how the cinema studies concept of star studies might be applied to the use of found objects in animation as a means of detecting additional layers of meaning.

In a series of 6 experiments, two hypotheses were tested: that nominal heading perception is determined by the relative motion of images of objects positioned at different depths (R. F. Wang & J. E. Cutting 1999) and that static depth information contributes to this determination. By manipulating static depth information while holding retinal-image motion constant during  simulated self-movement, the authors found that static depth information played a role in determining perceived heading. Some support was also found for the involvement of R. F. Wang and J. E. Cutting’s (1999) categories of object-image relative motion in determining perceived heading. However, results suggested an unexpected functional dominance of information about heading relative to apparently near objects.

We measured the effects of coherent motion of one set of dots on the perceived location of Gaussian envelopes formed by luminance modulation of a second set of dots. Perceived shifts in envelope location in the direction of coherent motion were obtained even when the dots forming the envelopes did not physically move in the direction of coherent motion. In such cases, perceived shifts coincided with stimulus configurations that permitted motion integration of the envelope dots with the coherently moving dots, for example, when envelope dots moved in random directions as opposed to being static. In subsequent experiments we explored the type of motion integration underlying the positional shifts obtained. We discounted the possibility that the visual system incorrectly attributes motion signals associated with coherently moving dots to envelope dots by demonstrating that positional shifts could be obtained even when the coherent dots were laterally displaced to either side of the envelope dots such that the regions occupied by the dots did not overlap. We also discounted spatio-temporal summation within the receptive fields of low-spatial-frequency motion-sensitive mechanisms by demonstrating that positional shifts persisted even when the dot displays were high-pass filtered. These results, coupled with the observation that the proportion of coherently moving dots required to produce positional shifts correlated well with global motion thresholds measured for the same dot configurations, suggests that visual processes which underlie motion-dependent positional shifts are based at least in part on cooperative interactions of the type implicated in global motion.

Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology offers sensors with lower cost, smaller size, lower power consumption. In this paper, a kind of low cost motion-sensing system based MEMS sensors is developed. The objective of the design is low cost, small volume and light weight in order to be used in many fields. The constituting principle of the system is described. Algorithms and hardware of the system are researched. And the definition of coordinate, calculation of pose angle, transform of acceleration and calculation of the velocities and displacement of the moving object are presented with corresponding mathematics model and algorithms. The experiments are carried out in principle and results are given. It is proved that the low cost motion-sensing system is effective and correct.

I undertook a research project regarding the use of African music at both primary and secondary school level with Victorian teachers in Melbourne in 2004. This study grew out of my first project, which examined the effectiveness of using African music with non-specialist primary teacher education students at Deakin University, Melbourne (see Joseph, 2002, 2003). In this paper the concept of 'change' in relation to teaching and learning is explored regarding practising teachers’ teaching and learning of African music in Australian schools. According to Campbell (2004), a guiding principle for shaping educational experiences designed to promote students’ musical and cultural understanding is for teachers to make music both meaningful and useful in their lives. She further contends that such an experience can 'come alive' for students if teachers promote active involvement for them as music listeners as well as makers of music. This paper discusses some of the findings in relation to why and how teachers are engaging with African music and what their students are learning from it. It may be argued that both students (Deakin University student project) and teachers (Victorian music project) perceived African music to be an effective way to transmit and engage with a 'new music and culture'.

Air-drag on a ballooning yarn and balloon shape affect the yarn tension and ends-down (yarn breakage), which in turn affects energy consumption and yarn productivity in ring spinning. In this article, a mathematical model of yarn ballooning motion in ring spinning is established. The model can be used to generate balloon shape and predict tension in the ballooning yarn under given spinning conditions. Yarn tension was measured using a computer data acquisition system and the balloon shapes were captured using a digital camera with video capability during the experiments using cotton and wool yarns at various balloon-heights and with varying yarn-length in the balloon. The air-drag coefficients on ballooning cotton and wool yarns in ring spinning were estimated by making a “best fit” between the theoretical and experimental turning points. The theoretical results were verified with experimental data. The effects of air-drag and balloon shape on yarn tension are discussed.

I remember when I was young, an advertising billboard poster proudly proclaimed: Coke Adds Life. An anti-advertising group were always at the ready to delete a D and graffiti a cross over the F to create the more believable slogan: Coke Ads Lie. Take the ‘f’ out of Life and we are left with a lie. This ad-busting was not only a reminder that Coke ads lie, but that all advertisements lie.

Objectives
To elicit descriptive data about limited joint range of motion (ROM) in subjects with type II or III spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and to examine the relation between the number of motions with limited range and both age and functional ability.
Design
Descriptive cross-sectional study.
Setting
Neurologic pediatric outpatient clinic at a hospital in Taiwan.
Participants
Twenty-seven subjects with SMA type II (mean age, 9.8±6.5y) and 17 with SMA type III (mean age, 12.2±8.7y).
Intervention
Measurement with transparent goniometers of joint ROM bilaterally of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle.
Main outcome measures
The proportion of participants with each ROM limitation compared with all participants with the same SMA type, age distribution of the participants with each ROM limitation, mean range loss of each motion limitation, and the contracture index (risk index of joint contracture).
Results
Eighty-nine percent of the participants with SMA type II experienced knee extension limitation. Approximately 50% of the participants with both types of SMA had ankle dorsiflexion limitation. The motions of knee and hip extension and ankle dorsiflexion also had a relatively high contracture index. The number of motions with limited range positively correlated (P<.001) with age and upper-extremity functional grade (the higher the functional grade, the poorer the functional ability) for SMA type II.
Conclusions
We found varying degrees of joint ROM limitation. Certain motions were noted to be high risks for the development of contractures. This risk was higher mostly in younger children.

Objective: To examine the test–retest reliability and construct validity of cervical active range of motion and isometric neck muscle strength as measured by the Multi Cervical Rehabilitation Unit (Hanoun Medical Inc., Ontario).
Design: A cross-sectional study.
Setting: Institutional practice.
Subjects: Twenty-one patients with neck pain and 25 healthy volunteers.
Methods: After a trial-run session, active range of motion (AROM) was measured in the subsequent two sessions, with 2–3 days in between. During each session, three measurements were taken for each direction (flexion, extension, lateral flexions and rotations). The measurement of isometric strength was after a 15-minute break following completion of the measurement of AROM. Three measurements were made for each of the six directions (flexion, extension, lateral flexions, protraction and retraction). The software of the Multi Cervical Rehabilitation Unit automatically recorded and calculated the maximum AROM and isometric strength.
Results: There was a good to high level of reliability in the measurement of AROM for both groups of subjects, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.81 to 0.96. Results also demonstrated very good to excellent reliability in isometric strength measurement (ICCs ranged from 0.92 to 0.99). Moreover, there was a significant difference in isometric neck muscle strength (p = 0.001) and in AROM (p = 0.034) between the two groups.
Conclusions: The Multi Cervical Rehabilitation Unit was found to be reliable and valid for testing the cervical active range of motion and isometric neck muscle strength for both normal and patient subjects.

The development of taxation law and policy has been driven largely by economic considerations and economic theory. Underlying this is the assumption that money is important to human well-being and is in fact the most important thing in this regard. Recent empirical studies of human well-being disprove this assumption. Money has only a limited bearing on happiness. It follows that economic arguments that have long shaped taxation law and policy should be discarded in preference for recent learning concerning what really matters to people. The results of the recent studies have significant implications for the manner in which we should raise tax. We argue that for income under approximately $20,000 the rate should be 0 to 5 per cent. For income between $20,000 to $50,000 the rate should be about 15 per cent. Incomes beyond this level should taxed at approximately 75 per cent. There is no reason to have further rate differentials.
