We have estimated the reliability of performance in a commonly employed exercise test consisting of repeated sprints on a cycle ergometer. Eight recreationally active young men completed a practice trial and three more trials at 3- to 6-day intervals. Each trial consisted of two bouts of 30-s maximal-effort cycling on an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer; the bouts were separated by 4 min of rest. The typical (standard) errors of measurement for peak and mean power between trials 2 to 4 were 2.5 and 1.7% respectively for the first bout and 1.9 and 1.8% for the second bout. These errors are substantially less than those in previous reliability studies of single 30-s sprint tests, probably because of differences in quality of ergometer. The typical errors for the difference between bouts (i.e., fatigue) for peak power and mean power were 3.0 and 2.5%, respectively. Typical errors for the average of the two bouts were 1.6 and 1.2% for peak and mean power respectively, which are small enough to give adequate precision for moderate treatment effects in studies with modest sample sizes.

Summary : This research evolved out of the need to examine the validity and inter-rater reliability of a set of performance-based scoring rubrics designed to measure competencies within the operating suite.

Method : Both holistic and analytical rubrics were developed aligned to the ACORN Standard [Australian College of Operating Room Nurses Standard NR4, 2004. ACORN Competency Standards for Perioperative Nurses: Standard NR4: The Instrument Nurse in the Perioperative Environment. Australian College of Operating Room Nurses Ltd, Adelaide] and underpinned by the Dreyfus model (1981). Three video clips that captured varying performance of nurses performing as instrument nurses in the operating suite were recorded and used as prompts by expert raters, who judged the performance using the rubrics.

Results :
The study found that the holistic rubrics led to more consistent judgments than the analytical rubrics, yet the latter provided more diagnostic information for intervention purposes. Despite less consistency, the Analytical Observation Form had sufficient construct validity to satisfy the requirements of criterion referencing as determined by the Item Separation Index (Rasch, 1960), including high internal consistency and greater inter-rater reliability when average ratings were used.

Conclusion :
The study was an empirical investigation of the use of concomitant Analytical and Holistic Rubrics to determine various levels of performance in the operating suite including inter-rater reliability. The methodology chosen was theoretically sound and sufficiently flexible to be used to develop other competencies within the operating suite.

Eight competitive oarswomen (age, 22 ± 3 years; mass, 64.4 ± 3.8 kg) performed three simulated 2,000-m time trials on a rowing ergometer. The trials, which were preceded by a 24-hour dietary and training control and 72 hours of caffeine abstinence, were conducted 1 hour after ingesting caffeine (6 or 9 mg · kg-1 body mass) or placebo. Plasma free fatty acid concentrations before exercise were higher with caffeine than placebo (0.67 ± 0.34 vs. 0.72 ± 0.36 vs. 0.30 ± 0.10 mM for 6 and 9 mg · kg-1caffeine and placebo, respectively; p < .05). Performance time improved 0.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0 to 1.5%) with 6 mg · kg-1 caffeine and 1.3% (95% CI 0.5 to 2.0%) with 9 mg · kg-1 caffeine. The first 500 m of the 2,000 m was faster with the higher caffeine dose compared with placebo or the lower dose (1.53 ± 0.52 vs. 1.55 ± 0.62 and 1.56 ± 0.43 min; p = .02). We concluded that caffeine produces a worthwhile enhancement of performance in a controlled laboratory setting, primarily by improving the first 500 m of a 2,000-m row.

This study investigates the relationship between a firm's risk and the effectiveness of the firm's corporate governance practices. Previous research investigating the relationship between corporate controls and firm performance has been mixed and often weak. Therefore, this study sets out to determine the efficiency of monitoring and incentive contracts given certain characteristics of the firm. That is, the study sets out to determine whether risk firms with higher monitoring and levels of incentives are associated with higher firm performance.
The results of this study of 282 firms demonstrate how the relationship between firm risk and performance is associated with the monitoring and incentive contracts used by these firms. In particular, the results of this study showed that the negative association between risk and firm performance is weakened when firms have stronger monitoring and incentive mechanisms. The particular contribution of this study is to show that the role of corporate governance variables infirm performance should be evaluated in the context of the firm's risk.

In this paper, research on exploring the potential of several popular equalization techniques while overcoming their disadvantages has been conducted. First, extensive literature survey on equalization is conducted. The focus has been placed on several popular linear equalization algorithm such as the conventional least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm, the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm, the fi1tered-X LMS algorithm and their development. The approach in analysing the performance of the filtered-X LMS Algorithm, a heuristic method based on linear time-invariant operator theory is provided to analyse the robust perfonnance of the filtered-X structure. It indicates that the extra filter could enhance the stability margin of the corresponding non filtered X structure. To overcome the slow convergence problem while keeping the simplicity of the LMS based algorithms, an H2 optimal initialization is proposed.

The current study evaluated the association between attitudes toward sex, stress, relationship quality, performance anxiety, and sexual dysfunction among 157 men (114 dysfunctional, 43 functional) and 186 women (84 dysfunctional, 102 functional). The results demonstrate that the main factors related to all types of sexual dysfunction among men were attitudes toward sex, conflict in their relationship, and performance anxiety. For women, the main factors related to all types of sexual dysfunction were attitudes toward sex, relationship quality, and performance anxiety. These results demonstrate the central role of performance anxiety in either the development or maintenance of sexual dysfunction among both men and women. Clearly, this is an area that has to be considered in any treatment program for sexual dysfunction. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserve

This study examines the factors affecting student performance in an undergraduate financial accounting course, utilising Computer Assisted Learning (CAL). Multiple regression analysis on student performance shows that positive perceptions of the usefulness of CAL significantly influenced performance. It was also found that International students had significantly poorer performance than local students. This result may be attributed to transitional problems experienced by these students, given their different pathways to university study Prior studies of accounting and computing at secondary school level, together with gender, were not significant influences on performance. The results have implications for accounting educators utilising CAL in courses as a means of improving students understanding of accounting concepts and as a means of providing efficient and effective educational instruction to maximise learning outcomes in accounting.

This article presents estimates of the effect of private school competition on public school performance. Using data on school districts in Georgia, the authors estimate models relating tenth- and third-grade test scores for either reading or mathematics to the level of private school competition. Test scores are not measurably or significantly higher in areas with greater private school competition, a result robust through multiple estimations using three measures of private school competition and a variety of control variables. The authors address the possible endogeneity between test scores and private school competition using instrumental variables estimators, with percentage of the population that is Catholic, county population in 1980, lagged competition, and various other measures as alternative instruments.

The Web played a role in the burst of economic activity that occurred in the late 1990s that saw company values dramatically rise and fall, business and government processes reshaped, traditional marketing media challenged, and much written concerning the benefits to customers from the adoption of what was initially termed e-commerce. Initial empirical studies of Australian and New Zealand business and government use of the Web found that while the Web was used for marketing communication, it was not as favoured as trade press reports suggested as a marketing transaction channel, nor for relationship management. This paper, which reports the findings of a pre-test of the self-administered online questionnaire stage of a three-phase study, suggests that little has changed in organisational use of the Web in Australia and New Zealand since the late 1990s, even among high network traffic organisations. The pre-test findings reported do not present a clear picture concerning the influence of strategic use of traditional and online marketing mix elements on organisational performance. Analysis employing a Marketing Readiness of Website Indicator (MRWI) content analysis tool is shown not to predict organisational performance as hypothesised.

Predictions concerning the influence of traditional and online marketing logistics network competency on organisational performance were tested via structural equation modelling employing a sample of Australian and New Zealand companies. The study finds a significant influence of the use of traditional marketing logistics networks on organisational performance, but that the use of the Web in this regard is yet to have such an influence.

In this work we evaluate the performance of routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks using different physical layer models. The results obtained show that the performance results obtained using idealized models such as the free space propagation model vary significantly when propagation effects such as path loss and shadowing are considered. This difference in performance indicates that optimization is required in the protocol development space that takes into account channel state information (CSI). Such an optimization requires a cross layer approach to be adopted and a framework for protocol performance evaluation to be established. We believe that this work would serve as a first step in this direction. We provide comparative performance results through network simulations.

Adrenergic amines found in extracts of Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) evoke analytically useful chemiluminescence with acidic potassium permanganate in the presence of polyphosphates. From corrected chemiluminescence spectra, the wavelength of maximum intensity for these reactions was 680 ± 5 nm and, using flow injection analysis methodology, limits of detection for synephrine, octopamine, tyramine and hordenine were found to be between 1 × 10−9 and 1 × 10−8 M. We have applied this method of detection to the rapid determination of synephrine in dietary supplements using monolithic column chromatography.
