Are the earliest field monuments of the pacific landscape serial sites?

Explanations of the origin and genesis of Pacific field monuments commonly assume they reflect local social change in islands or island groups which were increasingly isolated following colonization. A recent review of early West Polynesian archaeology suggests that the penecontemporaneous appearance of various kinds of field monuments from eastern Melanesia to Polynesia may be better explained as evidence of interaction and the movement of people and/or ideas, possibly associated with the colonization of East Polynesia.

Youth publications, generation Y and hopes for the future of newspapers

If readership projections are correct, newspapers in the United States will become niche players by 2010. That is, in about half a decade fewer than half of American adults will read a daily newspaper. This will produce major problems in attracting advertising, the lifeblood of the newspaper business. The biggest decline in readership has occurred among Generation Y - people born between 1977 and 1995. They do not read newspapers to the extent their parents did. They get their news elsewhere, mainly online. As part of a process to attract readers, many of America's major publishers launched a series of youth-focused newspapers in the 18 months to March 2004. The aim was to try to get the elusive 18-24-year-old demographic into the habit of daily reading, hoping that over time they would migrate to more traditional outlets. This paper explores the background to these youth-focused publications, describes the main players and issues involved, and provides a case study of a youth-focused pioneer, the Tribune Company s Red Eye, which is published in Chicago.

Efficient serial and parallel implementations of the cutting angle global optimisation technique

We examine efficient computer implementation of one method of deterministic global optimisation, the cutting angle method. In this method the objective function is approximated from values below the function with a piecewise linear auxiliary function. The global minimum of the objective function is approximated from the sequence of minima of this auxiliary function. Computing the minima of the auxiliary function is a combinatorial problem, and we show that it can be effectively parallelised. We discuss the improvements made to the serial implementation of the cutting angle method, and ways of distributing computations across multiple processors on parallel and cluster computers.

A preliminary meta-analysis of SME ebusiness journal publications: current trends and future research opportunities moving beyond adoption factor studies

Previous meta-analyses of SME-eBusiness journal research focuses on analysing adoption factors, pre-2000 articles and a small number of journals. This paper departs from this research by analysing 100 articles published between 2003 and 2006 in 41 journals on the basis of the research approaches employed, countries and eBusiness technologies studied, and research objectives focused upon. The paper presents preliminary insights into current major research trends based on this analysis, such as the predominant focus on adoption factor by many studies. It also identifies future research opportunities, and proposes a research agenda which aims to progress SME-eBusiness research beyond adoption factor studies by outlining research objectives to help SMEs overcome barriers and exploit drivers.

High-precision five-axis machine for high-speed material processing using linear motors and parallel-serial kinematics

The paper describes some details of the mechanical and kinematics design of a five-axis mechanism. The design has been utilized to physically realize an industrial-scale five-axis milling machine that can carry a three KW spindle. However, the mechanism could be utilized in other material processing and factory automation applications. The mechanism has five rectilinear joints/axes. Two of these axes are arranged traditionally, i.e. in series, and the other three axes utilize the concept of parallel kinematics. This combination results in a design that allows three translational and two rotational two-mode degrees of freedom (DOFs). The design provides speed, accuracy and cost advantages over traditional five-axis machines. All axes are actuated using linear motors.

What is referenced in marketing publications and has it changed over time?

Academic research has identified that business/marketing journals tend to draw on knowledge from a diverse set of disciplines. However, there has been limited examination of the source of these ideas in terms of types of materials (journals, books, conferences, business/popular press and other sources) or whether the use of these sources has changed over time. This paper examines these issues and found that within the three leading marketing journals (JM, JMR, JCR), the citation of journal articles has generally increased over time and the citation of nonjournal sources (i.e., journals, books, conferences, business/popular press and other sources), have generally decreased. There are, however, differences in the specific citation behaviour in the three journals and thus the citation of materials may be journal specific.

Fifteen good years : an analysis of publications in Management International Review

• This article presents a content analysis of Management International Review for the fifteen-year period 1993–2007. A total of 360 papers appearing in the journal during that period were analyzed to identify the key trends in the evolution of Management International Review.

• The five major themes addressed included an examination of the nature of authorship, an identification and ranking of the most prolific authors, an evaluation of the characteristics of the articles, recognition of the most influential articles based on the number of citations they received, and an uncovering of the specific thematic areas within the published articles.

• The study combines publishing productivity and citation analyses. The conclusions derived from the study are presented and some guidelines for future research provided.

Electronic commerce publications and the implications for research quality output in Australia

Australian universities and academics will soon see a major change in the way research is reported and funded. It is expected that by 2008, according to the most recent timetable (Bishop 2006), the Research Quality Framework (RQF) will be implemented. The result of the announcement has been an increased activity within universities focusing on the proposed criteria. The proposed RQF will seek to have research assessed according to quality and impact. Part of both quality and impact relates to where research is published. For academics it will be increasingly important to target high quality journals if the research is to be rated as high quality. The question this raises for Information Systems academics is where do we publish for maximum impact? The Information Systems (IS) field is diverse with researchers working in many areas and a publication outlet for one area may not be relevant for another. One area where many Australian IS researchers have focused their research interest is the field of electronic commerce (e-commerce). The research reported in this paper identified the publication outlets that would be regarded as amongst the highest quality for researchers wishing to publish e-commerce research. The authors analysed e-commerce research papers by Australian researchers published in the period 2000 to 2005. The results describe where Australian researchers are publishing in this field. The paper also provides guidance to those working in the e-commerce field on which journals and conferences to target to ensure their work rates highly in terms of the RQF.
