Using dimensional analysis and the finite element method, the spherical indentation hardness of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is investigated. The scaling relationship between the hardness and the mechanical properties of a SMA, such as the forward transformation stress, the maximum transformation strain magnitude, has been derived. Numerical results demonstrated that the hardness increases with the indentation depth but there is no three-fold relationship between the hardness and the forward transformation stress. Increasing the maximum transformation strain magnitude would reduce the hardness of the material. These research results enhance our understanding of the hardness from the spherical indentation of SMAs.

Titanium (Ti) and nickel (Ni) elemental powders were blened by ball milling and the ball milled powders were employed to fabricate NiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) foams by space sintering. Effect of ball milling time on phase constitutes of the sintered TiNi alloy foams was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.Scanning election microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the porous structure, and compressive tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the foams. Results indicate the porosities of the TiNi alloy foams can be controlled by using the spacer sincering method, and the porosities show a significant effect on the mechanical prperties and shape memory effect (SME).

Objectives
To elicit descriptive data about limited joint range of motion (ROM) in subjects with type II or III spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and to examine the relation between the number of motions with limited range and both age and functional ability.
Design
Descriptive cross-sectional study.
Setting
Neurologic pediatric outpatient clinic at a hospital in Taiwan.
Participants
Twenty-seven subjects with SMA type II (mean age, 9.8±6.5y) and 17 with SMA type III (mean age, 12.2±8.7y).
Intervention
Measurement with transparent goniometers of joint ROM bilaterally of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle.
Main outcome measures
The proportion of participants with each ROM limitation compared with all participants with the same SMA type, age distribution of the participants with each ROM limitation, mean range loss of each motion limitation, and the contracture index (risk index of joint contracture).
Results
Eighty-nine percent of the participants with SMA type II experienced knee extension limitation. Approximately 50% of the participants with both types of SMA had ankle dorsiflexion limitation. The motions of knee and hip extension and ankle dorsiflexion also had a relatively high contracture index. The number of motions with limited range positively correlated (P<.001) with age and upper-extremity functional grade (the higher the functional grade, the poorer the functional ability) for SMA type II.
Conclusions
We found varying degrees of joint ROM limitation. Certain motions were noted to be high risks for the development of contractures. This risk was higher mostly in younger children.

Titanium–nickel (TiNi) shape memory alloy (SMA) foams with an open-cell porous structure were fabricated by space-holder sintering process and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The mechanical properties and shape memory properties of the TiNi foam samples were investigated using compressive test. Results indicate that the plateau stresses and elastic moduli of the foams under compression decrease with the increase of their porosities. The plateau stresses and elastic moduli are measured to be from 1.9 to 38.3 MPa and from 30 to 860 MPa for the TiNi foam samples with porosities ranged from 71% to 87%, respectively. The mechanical properties of the TiNi alloy foams can be tailored to match those of bone. The TiNi alloy foams exhibit shape memory effect (SME), and it is found that the recoverable strain due to SME decreases with the increase of foam porosity.

Porous Ti-50.5at.%Ni shape memory alloy (SMA) samples with a range of  porosities were prepared by spacer sintering. The porous structure of the alloy was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase constituents of the porous TiNi alloy were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy was investigated using loading–unloading compression tests. Results indicate that the porous TiNi alloy exhibits superelasticity and the recoverable strain by the superelasticity decreases with the increase of porosity. After a prestrain of 7%, the superelastically recovered strains for the porous TiNi alloy samples with porosities of 46%, 59%, 69% and 77% are 2.0%, 1.8%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively. The pores in the TiNi alloy samples cause stress/strain concentration, as well as crack initiation, which adversely affect the shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy.

With the many benefits related to high levels of sport team identification, sport marketers, team management and communities at large desire fans to be highly identified with sport teams. Moreover, research has identified that key to developing high levels of team identification within fans are social-psychological mechanisms such as nostalgia (Fink et al., 2002; Funk & James, 2006; Gladden & Funk, 2002). Sport managers need to recognise the importance of nostalgia in the sport setting and its influence on identification (Gladden & Funk, 2002). The purpose of this study is twofold. First, a review of the literature pertaining to team identification, nostalgia and the relationship between these two concepts is presented. Second, a conceptual model together with propositions that will be investigated are provided in order to understand what is the role of nostalgia is in determining consumers’ identification with a sport team.

Although it seems counter-intuitive, past studies have found that the attitudes to the on-field performance of a team have only a small direct impact on the overall satisfaction of members (season ticket holders). By managing other aspects of the package well (e.g., ticketing, customer service, communications), membership can satisfy even when the on-field results do not. In this research, we examine whether on-field performance, measured both objectively and subjectively, has an indirect "halo" effect on attitudes towards those other aspects of the membership offering. An examination of data collected through 63 member satisfaction surveys of 14 different AFL clubs in the period 2003 - 2007 suggests that, predictably, a change to the win-loss ratio has a strong impact on attitudes to on-field performance and overall satisfaction. However, changes in on-field performance are also significantly correlated with changes in attitudes to areas like the extent to which one feels personally involved with the club and the administration of the club. The data allows the determination of the extent ofthis halo effect where a change in on-field performance (win percentage) has a predictable impact on attitudes to other aspects of the clubs activities, allowing club management to benchmark their performance in these areas even when on-field results fluctuate year to year.

This paper examines sports sponsorship from the perspective of the sports organisation as the sponsor of charity and community events - an increasingly common practice. Most of these sponsorship activities fit within the framework of cause-related marketing, but their effectiveness and value to the clubs involved are not known. We examine the activities of one AFL club which is heavily involved in a range of outbound sponsorship activities. In order to assess the impact of theses activities, we surveyed season ticket holders of this club and examined issues such as their general awareness of these activities and the both the antecedents and outcomes of this awareness. We find that general awareness (recognition) levels were high, and that the correlated with loyalty, involvement and specific brand associations. The conclusion is that outbound sponsorship of charities and the community has a number of positive outcomes for sporting clubs, and should be encouraged.

Sponsorship is a growing marketing communications tool which can produce unmatched results when used effectively. As such, rigid and applicable management frameworks are of critical importance as the discipline continues to develop. A conceptual review of existing sponsorship management frameworks and their common components are presented before an alternate cyclical management framework is derived. A series of case studies with organizations investing in elite level, million dollar sport sponsorship was used as the research strategy. Data was collected through qualitative interviews with within and cross case analysis used to identify trends. Five pillars of evidence supported the view that sponsorships were viewed and managed by corporate sponsors under a cyclical framework. The cyclical framework allows for interrelations between sponsorship management components to be better identified and investigated, and demonstrate how a cyclical view of management can aid the ongoing creation of value in long term sponsorships.

This paper explores the public and private perceptions of events that amalgamate two different themes into one unified event. In this paper, we refer to this as a hybrid event. The paper is set within the context of Melbourne, Australia, where two hybrid events (specifically a sport/culture event) were delivered in 2006 and 2007. Media reports about the 2007 event were analyzed to capture the public perception of the sport/cultural event, and focus group data, collected from attendees of the events, were analyzed to explore the private perceptions of the hybrid event. The results indicate that there are a range of views about the sport/cultural event, which are not always consistent. The findings of this study indicate that the hybrid event has the capacity to wade through a cluttered marketplace, but that it does require strong branding to position itself in the marketplace for competitive advantage.

The focus of this research is to identify the perceptions that professional sports club managers have about the impact that on-field success has on the attractiveness of a sport organisation to a prospective sponsor. From a series of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with the sponsorship/marketing managers from seven Melbourne based Australian Football League (AFL) clubs, an analysis of the importance of on-field success as a precursor for sponsorship was determined. The interview schedule consisted of four phases and concluded with a scale to rate the relative importance of on-field performance. The results indicated that AFL Club Managers believe that the onfield performance of the team does have an impact, but it is largely associated with the media coverage that this on-field success provides. They also identified that in the sport of AFL on-field success is largely controlled by the AFL governing organisation.

The interest in using porous shape memory alloy (SMA) scaffolds as implant materials has been growing in recent years due to the combination of their unique mechanical and functional properties, i.e. shape memory effect and superelasticity, low elastic modulus combined with new bone tissue ingrowth ability and vasculariszation. These attractive properties are of great benefit to the healing process for implant applications. This paper reviews current state-of-the art on the processing, porous characteristics and mechanical properties of porous SMAs for biomedical applications, with special focus on the most widely used SMA nickel-titanium (NiTi), including (i) microstructural features, mechanical and functional properties of NiTi SMAs; (ii) main processing methods for the fabrication of porous NiTi SMAs and their mechanical properties and (iii) new-generation Ni-free, biocompatible porous SMA scaffolds.
