Internal combustion engines release about 1/3 of the energy bound in the fuel as exhaust waste gas energy and another 1/3 energy is wasted through heat transfer into the ambient. On the other hand losses through friction are the third largest root cause for energy loss in internal combustion engines. During city driving frictional losses can be of the same size as the effective work, and during cold start these losses are even bigger. Therefore it is obvious to utilise wasted exhaust energy to warm up the engine oil directly. Frictional losses of any engine can be reduced during part load. Sensitivity analyses have been conducted for different concepts that utilise exhaust energy to reduce engine viscosity and friction. For a new system with an exhaust gas/oil heat exchanger the following benefits have been demonstrated:

• Fuel consumption reductions of over 7% measured as an average over 5 NEDC tests
compared to the standard system configuration.
• Significant reductions in exhaust emissions, mainly CO and NOx have been achieved
• Significantly higher oil temperatures during cold start indicate large potential to
reduce engine wear through reduced water condensation in the crankcase
• Fuel consumption reductions of further 3.3% to 4.6% compared to the 7% measured
over the NEDC test can be expected under real world customer usage conditions at
lower ambient temperatures.

Oil temperature measurements and analysis resulted in the idea of a novel system with further potential to reduce fuel consumption. This Oil Viscosity Energy Recovery System (OVER 7™) consists of 3 key features that add significant synergies if combined in a certain way: an oil warm up circuit/bypass, including oil pressure control and Exhaust Gas/Oil Heat Exchanger. The system separates the thermal inertias of the oil in the engine galleries and the oil pan, reduces hydraulic pumping losses, increases the heat transfer from the cylinder head to the oil, and utilises the exhaust heat to reduce oil friction.

The project demonstrated that sensitivity analysis is an important tool for the evaluation of different concepts. Especially for new concepts that include transient heat transfer such a qualitative approach in combination with accurate experiments and measurements can be faster and more efficient in leading to the desired improvements compared to time consuming detailed simulations.

Most empirical evidence suggests that the Fisher effect, stating that inflation and nominal interest rates should cointegrate with a unit slope on inflation, does not hold, a finding at odds with many theoretical models. This paper argues that these results can be attributed in part to the low power of univariate tests, and that the use of panel data can generate more powerful tests. For this purpose, we propose two new panel cointegration tests that can be applied under very general conditions, and that are shown by simulation to be more powerful than other existing tests. These tests are applied to a panel of quarterly data covering 20 OECD countries between 1980 and 2004. The evidence suggest that the Fisher effect cannot be rejected once the panel evidence on cointegration has been taken into account. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

BACKGROUND: Underperformance and the disharmony it can cause are not commonly faced by trainees. However, when it occurs, a process to recognize and manage the issues compassionately must be put in place. METHOD: A literature review was undertaken to outline processes and themes in addressing and resolving these types of issues. A PubMed search using 'surgical underperformance' and 'remedial teaching' was used as a broad template to find papers that illustrated key concepts. One thousand four hundred and fifteen papers were identified. In papers where the titles were in line with the stated topic, 294 abstracts were reviewed. Key papers were used to develop themes. Additional cross-referenced papers were also included where relevant. RESULTS: There can be a variety of reasons for trainee underperformance. The root cause is not always clear. Disharmony can result in a surgical unit during this time. The involved trainee as well as the members of the clinical unit may experience a variety of stressors. A systematic process of management can be used to evaluate the situation and bring some resolution to difficulties in working relationships. CONCLUSION: Early constructive intervention improves outcomes. There should be a process to systematically and compassionately resolve underlying issues. This paper outlines the disharmony that can result from trainee underperformance and offers guidance for resolution to those involved.

Background: Up-to-date evidence on levels and trends for age-sex-specific all-cause and cause-specific mortality is essential for the formation of global, regional, and national health policies. In the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) we estimated yearly deaths for 188 countries between 1990, and 2013. We used the results to assess whether there is epidemiological convergence across countries. Methods We estimated age-sex-specific all-cause mortality using the GBD 2010 methods with some refinements to improve accuracy applied to an updated database of vital registration, survey, and census data. We generally estimated cause of death as in the GBD 2010. Key improvements included the addition of more recent vital registration data for 72 countries, an updated verbal autopsy literature review, two new and detailed data systems for China, and more detail for Mexico, UK, Turkey, and Russia. We improved statistical models for garbage code redistribution. We used six different modelling strategies across the 240 causes; cause of death ensemble modelling (CODEm) was the dominant strategy for causes with sufficient information. Trends for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias were informed by meta-regression of prevalence studies. For pathogen-specific causes of diarrhoea and lower respiratory infections we used a counterfactual approach. We computed two measures of convergence (inequality) across countries: the average relative difference across all pairs of countries (Gini coefficient) and the average absolute difference across countries. To summarise broad findings, we used multiple decrement life-tables to decompose probabilities of death from birth to exact age 15 years, from exact age 15 years to exact age 50 years, and from exact age 50 years to exact age 75 years, and life expectancy at birth into major causes. For all quantities reported, we computed 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). We constrained cause-specific fractions within each age-sex-country-year group to sum to all-cause mortality based on draws from the uncertainty distributions. Findings Global life expectancy for both sexes increased from 65·3 years (UI 65·0-65·6) in 1990, to 71·5 years (UI 71·0-71·9) in 2013, while the number of deaths increased from 47·5 million (UI 46·8-48·2) to 54·9 million (UI 53·6-56·3) over the same interval. Global progress masked variation by age and sex: for children, average absolute differences between countries decreased but relative differences increased.For women aged 25-39 years and older than 75 years and for men aged 20-49 years and 65 years and older, both absolute and relative differences increased. Decomposition of global and regional life expectancy showed the prominent role of reductions in age-standardised death rates for cardiovascular diseases and cancers in high-income regions, and reductions in child deaths from diarrhoea, lower respiratory infections, and neonatal causes in low-income regions. HIV/AIDS reduced life expectancy in southern sub-Saharan Africa. For most communicable causes of death both numbers of deaths and age-standardised death rates fell whereas for most non-communicable causes, demographic shifts have increased numbers of deaths but decreased age-standardised death rates. Global deaths from injury increased by 10·7%, from 4·3 million deaths in 1990 to 4·8 million in 2013; but age-standardised rates declined over the same period by 21%. For some causes of more than 100 000 deaths per year in 2013, age-standardised death rates increased between 1990 and 2013, including HIV/AIDS, pancreatic cancer, atrial fibrillation and flutter, drug use disorders, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and sickle-cell anaemias. Diarrhoeal diseases, lower respiratory infections, neonatal causes, and malaria are still in the top five causes of death in children younger than 5 years. The most important pathogens are rotavirus for diarrhoea and pneumococcus for lower respiratory infections. Country-specific probabilities of death over three phases of life were substantially varied between and within regions. Interpretation For most countries, the general pattern of reductions in age-sex specific mortality has been associated with a progressive shift towards a larger share of the remaining deaths caused by non-communicable disease and injuries. Assessing epidemiological convergence across countries depends on whether an absolute or relative measure of inequality is used. Nevertheless, age-standardised death rates for seven substantial causes are increasing, suggesting the potential for reversals in some countries. Important gaps exist in the empirical data for cause of death estimates for some countries; for example, no national data for India are available for the past decade.

Urban stormwater non-point source pollutants are recognized as a major cause of receiving waters quality deterioration. To date most research has focused on specifying temporal variations of stormwater quality parameters which includes high uncertainties and also increases the risk of pollution control structures failure. Traditionally, the temporal variations of quality parameters in forms of either pollutograph or Event Mean Concentration (EMC) is obtained by sampling stormwater at the outlet of urban catchments for quality analysis in addition to measurement of flow rate over years. Spatial variations of the runoff quality are the key factor in non-point source pollution studies. This research investigates spatial variability of urban runoff quality parameters such as Total Phosphorous (TP), Total Nitrogen (TN), Suspended Solids (SS) and Biochemical Oxygen Demands (BOD) in relation to land use of urban catchments. In spatial analysis, stormwater will be sampled over the whole catchment area for a number of rainfall events during a year without any requirement to measure flow rate. This research showed comparable results for average pollutant concentrations with those of other urban catchments in Australia where traditional sampling method was used. The research outcomes will reliably estimate pollutants concentration for improved and efficient design of pollution control structures for each land use.

The paper responds to the release of both the AusCERT and CSI/FBI computer crime and security surveys with a comparison of the results between the two countries' respondents. Overall both surveys show the trend that most organisations employ security technologies but half of them still experience incidents which compromise their security. These incidents have significant quantifiable losses but despite these organisations are still loathed to report to law enforcement agencies for various reasons. These include the impression that law enforcement agencies are not interested, and the negative publicity such incidents can cause in their aftermath.

Wear is the principal cause of tool failure in most sheet metal forming processes. It is well known that the contact pressure between the blank and the tool has a large influence on the wear of the tool, and hence the tool life. This investigation utilises the finite element method to analyse the contact pressure distribution over the die radius for a particular deep drawing process. Furthermore, the evolution of the predicted contact pressure distribution throughout the entire stroke of the punch is also examined. It was found that the majority of the process shows a steady state pressure distribution, with two characteristic peaks over the die radius, at the beginning and end of the sheet contact area. Interestingly, the initial transient contact pressure response showed extremely high localised peak pressures; more than twice that of the steady state peaks. Results are compared to wear reported in the literature, during similar experimental deep drawing processes. Finally, the significance and effect of the results on wear and wear-testing techniques are discussed.

This paper develops a conceptual model of the relationship between different cultural values and how they influence consumer satisfaction in the tourism industry. It is hypothesized that cultural differences manifest themselves in different levels of importance being placed upon different aspects of service, and the differences between the levels of importance and the actual service received cause differences in the levels of satisfaction. These hypotheses are tested using 269 independent samples of levels of importance and 411 independent samples of satisfaction of tourists from four cultural groups (Australian, USA/Canadian, Japanese, Mandarin speakers) who visited Melbourne, Australia in the period May-September, 1996. The analysis develops dimensions of importance and satisfaction separately for each cultural grouping, and uses structural equation modeling (Amos 3.6) to develop the causal model measuring the way in which importance of service dimensions cause dimensions of satisfaction. Conclusions from the analysis show little evidence of a causal relationship between importance of service quality attributes and satisfaction. However, significant differences are found between cultures for different levels of satisfaction resulting indirectly from differences in the importance and actual levels of service received.

Background
Increased consumption of fruit and vegetables has been shown to be associated with a reduced risk of stroke in most epidemiological studies, although the extent of the association is uncertain. We quantitatively assessed the relation between fruit and vegetable intake and incidence of stroke in a meta-analysis of cohort studies.

Methods

We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and bibliographies of retrieved articles. Studies were included if they reported relative risks and corresponding 95% CIs of stroke with respect to frequency of fruit and vegetable intake.

Findings
Eight studies, consisting of nine independent cohorts, met the inclusion criteria. These groups included 257 551 individuals (4917 stroke events) with an average follow-up of 13 years. Compared with individuals who had less than three servings of fruit and vegetables per day, the pooled relative risk of stroke was 0·89 (95% CI 0·83–0·97) for those with three to five servings per day, and 0·74 (0·69–0·79) for those with more than five servings per day. Subgroup analyses showed that fruit and vegetables had a significant protective effect on both ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.

Interpretation
Increased fruit and vegetable intake in the range commonly consumed is associated with a reduced risk of stroke. Our results provide strong support for the recommendations to consume more than five servings of fruit and vegetables per day, which is likely to cause a major reduction in strokes.

Purpose. Glabridin is a major active constituent of Glycyrrhiza glabra which is commonly used in the treatment of cardiovascular and central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Recently, we have found that glabridin is a substrate of P-glycoprotein (PgP/MDR1). This study aimed to investigate the role of PgP in glabridin penetration across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) using several in vitro and in vivo models.
Materials and Methods. Cultured primary rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (RBMVECs) were used in the uptake, efflux and transcellular transport studies. A rat bilateral in situ brain perfusion model was used to investigate the brain distribution of glabridin. The brain and tissue distribution of glabridin in rats with or without coadministered verapamil or quinidine were examined with correction for the tissue residual blood. In addition, the brain distribution of glabridin in mdr1a(-/-) mice was compared with the wild-type mice. Glabridin in various biological matrices was determined by a validated liquid chromatography mass spectrometric method.
Results. The uptake and efflux of glabridin in cultured RBMVECs were ATP-dependent and significantly altered in the presence of a PgP or multi-drug resistance protein (Mrp1/2) inhibitor (e.g. verapamil or MK-571). A polarized transport of glabridin was found in RBMVEC monolayers with
facilitated efflux from the abluminal (BL) to luminal (AP) side. Addition of a PgP or Mrp1/2 inhibitor in both luminal and abluminal sides attenuated the polarized transport across RBMVECs. In a bilateral in situ brain perfusion model, the uptake of glabridin into the cerebrum increased from 0.42 T 0.09% at 1 min to 9.27 T 1.69% (ml/100 g tissue) at 30 min and was significantly greater than that for sucrose. Coperfusion of a PgP or Mrp1/2 inhibitor significantly increased the brain distribution of glabridin by 33.6j142.9%. The rat brain levels of glabridin were only about 27% of plasma levels when corrected by tissue residual blood and it was increased to up to 44% when verapamil or quinidine was coadministered. The area under the brain concentration-time curve (AUC) of glabridin in mdr1a(-/-) mice was 6.0-fold higher than the wild-type mice.
Conclusions. These findings indicate that PgP limits the brain penetration of glabridin through the BBB and PgP may cause drug resistance to glabridin (licorice) therapy for CNS diseases and potential drugglabridin interactions. However, further studies are needed to explore the role of other drug transporters (e.g. Mrp1-4) in restricting the brain penetration of glabridin.

Implementation of integrated catchment management (ICM) is hampered by the lack of a conceptual framework for explaining how landowners select farming systems for their properties. Benefit–cost analysis (a procedure that estimates the costs and benefits of alternative actions or policies) has limitations in this regard, which might be overcome by using multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). MCDA evaluates and ranks alternatives based on a landowner's preferences (weights) for multiple-criteria and the values of those criteria. A MCDA approach to ICM is superior to benefit–cost analysis which focuses only on the monetary benefits and costs, because it: 1) recognizes that human activities within a catchment are motivated by multiple and often competing criteria and/or constraints; 2) does not require monetary valuation of criteria; 3) allows trade-offs between criteria to be measured and evaluated; 4) explicitly considers how the spatial configuration of farming systems in a catchment influences the values of criteria; 5) is comprehensive, knowledge-based, and stakeholder oriented which greatly increases the likelihood of resolving catchment problems; and 6) allows consideration of the fairness and sustainability of land and water resource management decisions. A MCDA based on an additive, multiple-criteria utility function containing five economic and environmental criteria was used to score and rank five farming systems. The rankings were based on the average criteria weights for a sample of 20 farmers in a US catchment. The most profitable farming system was the lowest-ranked farming system. Three possible reasons for this result are evaluated. First, the MCDA method might cause respondents to express socially acceptable attitudes towards environmental criteria even when they are not important from a personal viewpoint. Second, the MCDA method could inflate the ranks of less profitable farming systems for the simple reason that it allows the respondent to assign non-zero weights to non-economic criteria. Third, the MCDA might provide a better framework for evaluating a landowner's selection of farming systems than the profit maximization model.

This article applies recently developed panel unit root and panel cointegration techniques to estimate the long-run income and price elasticities for oil in the Middle East. The results for the panel indicate that demand for oil is highly price inelastic and slightly income elastic in the Middle East. There is considerable variation in the results for the income variable across countries, with the coefficient on the income variable statistically insignificant for several countries. The coefficient on the price variable is statistically significant in all cases with the expected sign and the price elasticity is uniformly low. While the results for the income variable differ across countries, the results for the panel as a whole suggest that the demand for oil in the Middle East is being driven largely by strong economic growth, while consumers are largely insensitive to price changes.

A novel chemiluminescence flow injection procedure for the determination of As(III) in aqueous samples is described. The method involves injection of As(III) samples into a 1% (m/v) sodium hexametaphosphate in 0.02 M H2SO4 carrier stream, which then merges at a Y-piece with a reagent stream consisting of potassium permanganate (5.0 × 10−5 M) made up in the acidic sodium hexametaphosphate carrier solution. The chemiluminescence intensity of the resulting reaction mixture was measured at a photomultiplier tube operated at a voltage of 0.93 kV. Under optimized conditions, the method is characterised by a linear range from 0.5 to 5.0 μg l−1, a detection limit of 0.3 μg l−1 and a sampling frequency of 150 h−1. The effects of common anionic and cationic interferences were investigated, and it was found that the only ions to cause serious interference were those which react with potassium permanganate, namely sulphide, iodide and ferrous.
