Al/MgAl2O4 in situ metal matrix composites have been synthesized using value-added silica sources (microsilica and rice husk ash) containing ~97% SiO2 in Al-5 wt.% Mg alloy. The thermodynamics and kinetics of MgAl2O4 formation are discussed in detail. The MgO and MgAl2O4 phases were found to dominate in microsilica (MS) and rice husk ash (RHA) value-added composites, respectively, during the initial stage of holding the composites at 750 °C. A transition phase between MgO and MgAl2O4 was detected by the scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) analysis of the particles extracted from the composite using 25% NaOH solution. This confirms that MgO is gradually transformed to MgAl2O4 by the reaction 3SiO2(s)+2MgO(s)+4Al(l)→2MgAl2O4(s)+3Si(l). The stoichiometry of MgAl2O4, n, computed by a new methodology is between 0.79 and 1.18. The reaction between the silica sources and the molten metal stopped after 55% of the silica source was consumed. A gradual increase in mean MgAl2O4 crystallite size, D, from 24 to 36 nm was observed in the samples held for 10 h.

Field-scale remediation of oil-contaminated soils from the Liaohe Oil Fields in China was examined using composting biopiles in windrow technology. Micronutrient-enriched chicken excrement and rice husk were applied as nutrition and a bulking agent. The lipase activities of indigenous micro-organisms were analyzed, and three indigenous fungi with high lipase activities was identified. An inoculum consisting of the three indigenous fungi and one introduced (exotic) fungus was applied to four different types of oil-contaminated soils. The results showed that the inoculum of indigenous fungi increased both the total colony-forming units (TCFU) and increased the rate of degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in all contaminated soils but at different rates. In sharp contrast to other studies, the introduction of exotic micro-organisms did not improve the remediation, and suggests that inoculation of oil-contaminated sites with nonindigenous species is likely to fail. On the other hand, indigenous genera of microbes were found to be very effective in increasing the rate of degradation of TPH. The degradation of TPH was mainly controlled by the compositions of aromatic hydrocarbons and asphaltene and resin. Between 38 to 57% degradation of crude oils (with densities ranging from 25,800 to 77,200 mg/kg dry weight) in contaminated soils was achieved after 53 days of operation. The degradation patterns followed typical first-order reactions. We demonstrate that the construction and operation of field-scale composting biopiles in windrows with passive aeration is a cost-effective bioremediation technology.

Arsenic contaminated water from tube wells has become the major health problem threatening millions of people in Bangladesh. However, the arsenic (As) contaminated water is not just used for drinking, it is used to irrigate crops, and to wash and prepare food. Contamination of agricultural soils by long-term irrigation with As contaminated water can lead to contamination and phyto-accumulation of the food crops with As and other toxic metals. As a consequence, dietary exposure to As and other toxic metals may contribute substantially to the adverse health effects caused by the contaminated tube wells in Bangladesh. Various vegetables, rice, pulses and the grass pea were sampled in Samta village in the Jessore district of Bangladesh and screened for As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. These local food crops provide the majority of the nutritional intake of the people in this area and are of great importance to their overall health. In general, our data show the potential for some vegetables to accumulate heavy metals with concentrations of Pb greater than Cd. The concentrations of As and Cd were higher in vegetables than in rice and pulses. The concentration of Pb was generally higher in rice than in pulses and vegetables. However, some vegetables such as bottle ground leaf, ghotkol, taro, eddoe and elephant foot had much higher concentrations of Pb. Other leafy and root vegetables contained higher concentrations oJ2n and Cu. Rice grown at Samta had increased Pb and As, but, considering an average daily intake of only 260 g rice per person per day, only the Pb is at concentrations which would be a health hazard/or human consumption.

Current regulations classify fly ash as a prescribed waste and prohibit its disposal in regular landfill. Treatment of the fly ash can reduce the leach rate of metals, and allow it to be disposed in less prescribed landfill. A geopolymer matrix was investigated as a potential stabilisation method for brown coal fly ash. Precipitator fly ash was obtained from electrostatic precipitators and leached fly ash was collected from ash disposal ponds, and leaching tests were conducted on both types of geopolymer stabilised fly ashes. The ratio of fly ash to geopolymer was varied to determine the effects of different compositions on leaching rates.

The burning of brown coal for electricity generation produces thousands of tonnes of fly ash each year. Treatment of the fly ash can reduce leach rates of metals and allow it to be disposed in less prescribed landfill. A geopolymer matrix was investigated as a potential stabilisation method for fly ash obtained from electrostatic precipitators and ash disposal ponds. The ratio of fly ash and geopolymer was varied to determine the effects of different compositions on leaching rates. The major element leachate concentrations obtained from pond ash were lower than that of precipitator fly ash. Conversely, precipitator ash-geopolymers were better for trace heavy metal stabilisation. Effective reduction of elemental concentrations in the leachate has been achieved, particularly for calcium, arsenic, selenium, strontium and barium. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the distribution of metals originated from fly ash and from added geopolymer material. It also showed that some elements are leached from ash particles to the geopolymer phase and others remained as undissolved particles. Qualitative analysis showed that fly ash particles interacted with the geopolymers phase through surface reactions.

In this study, Australian brown coal fly ash particles have been collected from power station and analysed by scanning electron microscopy to obtain morphological information and elemental composition of individual particles. The most common particles found to be the irregular shape particle aggregates. Other shapes include ball shape with smooth surface and with some attachments; and crystal shape fine particles. The X-ray spectra of each fly ash particle revealed five groups of elemental composition, they are Si-rich particles; Ca-rich particles; Fe-rich particles; particles with Mg-Ca Matrix and particles with Si-Ca matrix. A particle sire distribution analysis has been conducted using particle size analyser and found to have a mean particle size of 21fim. The sample then was separated into fine and coarse fractions using aerodynamic classifier, and the elemental composition of both fractions were determined by ICP-AES. Borate fusion and acid dissolution method was used for sample preparation. It is found that some environmental sensitive elements such as Zn, Pb, Ni, K and Cu are enriched in fine fly ash particles. Ca has much higher contents in fine particles as well. Si and Mg have higher concentrations in coarse particles.

Fly ash is generated from combustion of brown coal in power stations. The majority of fly ash is removed by electrostatic precipitators (ESP) and finally disposed into the landfill as prescribed wastes. A method was studied to add clay materials to the brown coal fly ash in order to form the so-called geopolymer network, which is effective at stopping the metal contents from leaching, and have minimum impact to the environment. The experiments were conducted parallel on leached fly ash and dry precipitator fly ash. The ratios of fly ash and added clay materials were varied to determine the effects of different compositions on leaching rates. Both X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy images showed that as the percentage of fly ash was increased, the formation of geopolymer is reduced. Eighteen metals and heavy metals were targeted during the leaching tests and the leachate samples were analysed using ICP-AES and ICP-MS. It was found that the reduction of metal leaching was achieved by adding up to 60% of fly ash to form the geopolymer like structure. Significant reductions were observed for calcium, strontium and barium. Leached fly ash achieved better stabilisation than dry precipitator fly ash for major elements. It's hard to quantify its effects on trace metals leaching due to their ultra low concentration in the fly ash. The samples spiked with trace metals of lead, zinc, mercury and barium showed remarkable reduction in leaching.

The present study investigated the effects of fenugreek flour (Trigonella foenum-graecum) and debittered fenugreek polysaccharide (FenuLife®) inclusion on the physical and sensory quality characteristics, and glycaemic index (GI) of chickpea–rice based extruded products. Based on preliminary evaluation with different proportions of chick pea and rice, a blend of 70:30 chickpea and rice was chosen as the control for further studies. The control blend, replaced with fenugreek flour at 2%, 5% and 10%, or fenugreek polysaccharide at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, was extruded at the optimum processing conditions as specified in the detailed study. The extruded products were evaluated for their physical (moisture retention, expansion, hardness, water solubility index (WSI) and water absorption index (WAI)), sensory (flavor, texture, color and overall acceptability) characteristics and in vitro GI to evaluate their suitability as extruded snack products.

Due to the distinct bitter taste, inclusion of fenugreek flour was not acceptable at levels more than 2% in extruded chickpea based products. Addition of fenugreek polysaccharide resulted in slight reduction in radial expansion (P < 0.05), while longitudinal expansion increased. WAI increased while WSI decreased compared to the control (P < 0.05). The mean scores of sensory evaluation indicated that all products containing fenugreek polysaccharide up to 15% were within the acceptable range. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) between products containing 5–15% fenugreek polysaccharide in their color, flavor, texture and overall quality.

Fenugreek, in the form of debittered polysaccharide (FenuLife®) could be incorporated up to a level of 15% in a chickpea–rice blend to develop snack products of acceptable physical and sensory properties with low GI Index.

In a recent initiative, the Fiji government has established a revitalisation program for the rice industry, with assistance expected from the Republic of China, India and Indonesia. Using the computable general equilibrium model of the Fijian economy, the economy-wide impact of a 40 per cent increase in rice production is simulated. This analysis finds that even such a large increase in production would have an insignificant impact on Fiji's economic growth.

This research explores geopolymer technology as a means of stabilising fly ash from power stations. By controlling the synthesis process, geopolymeric materials incorporating fly ash were synthesised. Successful stabilisation of strontium and barium was achieved, though attributed to side reactions. The geopolymer did not contribute significantly to stabilisation of fly ash.

Examines the testimonies of Holocaust survivors from Melbourne's Jewish Holocaust Testimonies Project. The trauma of having "survived" the experiences of the Holocaust precipitated a tension within language, imagery and narrative structure as the survivors often struggled with a form of mnemonic incapacitation. As such the testimonies confront the linearity of storytelling and history, and ultimately of identity as having a fixed essence. Concludes that memory summons the past within the present, it does not simply recall it.
