Grain refinement during and after hot isothermal deformation of a medium carbon steel has been investigated. The average austenite grain size decreased with an increase in strain for the hot deformed and recrystallised material, with refinement extending beyond the strain for the peak stress. A window of strain that corresponds to transition from classical static to metadynamic recrystallisation was observed in respect to the recrystallised material. Within this post-dynamic transition window the strain at which strain independent softening occurs was different for different volume fractions of the recrystallised material. This led to a new terminology corresponding to initiation of strain independent softening. For the alloy of this study, strain independent softening for the start of post-deformation recrystallisation occurred near the strain to the peak stress. The strain corresponding to complete metadynamic recrystallisation, which was defined as when all levels of recrystallisation were strain independent, was much greater than the strain for the peak stress.

A feasibility study for handling the partial recrystallisation in multi-pass hot deformation where the heterogeneity of microstructure of deformed austenite is inherently accompanied is presented. The proposed model is based on modification of the conventional model in which the microstructure of deformed austenite at each pass is simply taken as being homogeneous during the multi-pass deformation. The usefulness of the modified model has been demonstrated by applying it to a four-pass oval–round (or round–oval) rod rolling sequence. The recrystallised fraction, austenite grain size (AGS) and mean flow stress at each pass computed from the modified model has been compared with those from the conventional model. The result showed that the recrystallisation behaviour and evolution of AGS at a given pass were dependent on the modelling method of the partial recrystallisation in the multi-pass rolling for the case studied. As the rolling speed increased, the difference between the mean flow stresses calculated by the conventional model and the proposed model was gradually larger in accordance with the contribution of partial recrystallisation.

This data looks at the effect of grain boundary movement on the characteristics of substructure development within the DRX regime. Different thermo-mechanical processing routes were employed to produce a range of DRX grain sizes at a given deformation temperature. The development of dislocation substructure was investigated using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

The static recrystallisation behaviour of two magnesium alloys after hot rolling have been examined. The alloys chosen for study were the conventional alloy AZ31, and an alloy containing the rare earth element Gadolinium. The recrystallisation kinetics were lower for the rareearth alloy at low annealing temperatures, but at high annealing temperatures the kinetics were higher for the rare-earth alloy. It is suggested that this change in the comparative recrystallisation kinetics is a result of the improved mobility of the rare-earth solute at higher temperatures. This affects the recrystallisation kinetics through solute partitioning to the grain boundaries. The effect of this segregation on the recrystallisation texture is also discussed.

An as-cast austenitic stainless steel was hot deformed at 1173 K, 1223 K, and 1373 K (900 °C, 950 °C, and 1100 °C) to a strain of 1 with a strain rate of 0.5 or 5 s−1. The recrystallised fraction is observed to be dependent on dynamic recrystallisation (DRX). DRX grains nucleated at the initial stages of recrystallization have similar orientation to that of the deformed grains. With increasing deformation, Cube texture dominates, mainly due to multiple twinning and grain rotation during deformation.

The evolution of hot working flow stress with strain is examined in torsion, uniaxial compression and channel die compression. The flow stress was found to be strongly dependent on texture and deformation mode. At low strains this dependency accounted for a difference in flow stress of up to a factor of two. At higher strains the influence of texture and deformation mode was less marked. The stresses corresponding to an equivalent strain of 0.5 were modelled using a power law expression with an activation energy of 147 kJ/mol and a strain rate exponent of 0.15. The influence of texture and deformation mode on flow stress is rationalised in terms of the influence of prismatic slip, twinning and dynamic recrystallisation on deformation stress and structure.

A thermomechanical processing (TMP) structure map is proposed that plots the critical strains required for dynamic recrystallization along with the grain sizes that result. These maps are useful in identifying the limits to grain refinement and designing hot working processes. They are readily constructed for well studied alloys such as plain carbon steel. In light of the recent interest in the hot working of magnesium, initial steps are taken here to construct a TMP structure map for the most common wrought magnesium alloy, AZ31. The completion of dynamic recrystallization is estimated using a geometrical approach and a twinning region is identified.

The influence of grain size on the deformation of extruded Mg-3Al-1Zn tested in tension at temperatures between room temperature and 300°C is investigated. The results enable estimation of the deformation conditions for the transition from slip to twinning dominated flow and for the initiation and completion of dynamic recrystallization. A map illustrating these critical parameters is constructed and it is shown that the operating conditions of the common wrought processes straddle key transitions in microstructure behaviour.

The post-deformation softening behaviour of austenite has been studied for various compositions and deformation conditions. The strain at which the transition from strain dependent to strain independent post-deformation softening behaviour occurs (ε*) has been found to coincide closely with the strain to the peak stress (εp) under certain conditions but not under others. It has been proposed that the relationship between ε* and εp may be described geometrically using the initial grain size and the dynamically recrystallised grain size.
