Objective : To determine the level of neck strength decrement and the rate of strength recovery of the neck muscles after a single bout of specific neck conditioning exercise in both males and females.

Hypothesis : A decrement in neck strength may be evident after a bout of strengthening exercise.

Design : Intervention study with pre-and-post design.

Setting : Biomechanics laboratory.

Participants : Twenty healthy participants (10 male and 10 female, mean ± standard deviation age 22 ± 1.2 years).

Main Outcome Measures : Participants performed a single bout of neck strengthening exercise. Neck strength testing using an isokinetic dynamometer was performed pre and at five time points (1 h, one, three, five and seven days) post-exercise to assess the level of neck strength decrement and neck strength recovery rate from pre-exercise levels.

Results : Statistically significant (p ≥ 0.036) decreases in neck extension strength were recorded in all participants 1 h and one day post-exercise. The level of neck extension strength returned to pre-exercise levels three days post-exercise and surpassed pre-exercise levels five and seven days post-exercise. The male participants' neck flexion strength decrement and recovery followed a similar pattern to that displayed in neck extension but more variability in neck flexion strength recovery rates were recorded in the female participants in this study.

Conclusion : The consistent strength recovery times for the male participants recorded in this study idealise the prescription of neck strengthening exercises in a periodised fashion. More investigation needs to be instigated for the female neck musculature as consistent strength recovery rates were not identified in this study.

In this study, permeate from a hollow fiber polyethylene (PE) membrane bio-reactor (MBR) system treating synthetic agricultural wastewater was fed into a cellulose acetate brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO30 2540) membrane system; three different trans-membranes pressures (TMPs) of 1000, 2500, and 4000 kPa were selected to evaluate the system performance in terms of general operating parameters as well as the removal of chosen important potential fouling water quality parameters. The results showed that highest corrected permeate flux rate was at a TMP of 2500 kPa, whereas lowest recorded at a TMP of 4000 kPa. Similar situation prevailed in water recovery rate. But temperature corrected specific fluxes decreased as the applied TMPs increased. In all selected TMPs, more than 96% of salinity was removed. Permeate from MBR as feed to reverse osmosis required frequent chemical cleaning than the microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF) permeates and granular media filter (GMF) filtered in order to maintain the required rate of product water. One of the reasons for this frequent chemical cleaning is due to higher total organic carbon as well as total nitrogen (TN) in the MBR permeate. This result needs to be further evaluated through field trials.

Oil spills cause serious damage to the aquatic ecosystem and require quick cleanup. Herein we report high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) xerogels for the first time as oil absorbents for enhanced oil spill recovery. The HIPE xerogels absorb diesel from the water-oil mixture in 20-30 seconds. The absorption capacity of the HIPE xerogels ranges from 20 to 32 times for different kinds of oils, and the oils can be recovered simply by being squeezed out, with a recovery rate around 80%. They can be reused at least 40 times without obvious deterioration in oil separation properties from 0 to 45 °C. These novel xerogels are suitable for practical use in oil spill reclamation and wastewater treatment.

As a non-renewable resource, the rational exploitation of oil has attracted a large amount of attention. Among many methods for enhanced oil recovery, polymer flooding is the most suitable method of chemical flooding for non-marine reservoirs and therefore various modified acrylamide-based copolymers have been studied. In this study, a novel α-aminophosphonic acid-modified hydrophobic associating copolymer was successfully synthesized by copolymerization of acrylamide, acrylic acid, N-allyldodecanamide and 1-(dimethylamino)allylphosphonic acid. The copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and thermogravimetry and exhibited superior water solubility and thickening capability. Subsequently, the shear resistance, temperature resistance and salt tolerance of the copolymer solution were investigated. The value of apparent viscosity retention of a 2000 mg L-1 copolymer solution was as high as 58.55 mPa s at a shear rate of 170 s-1 and remained at 40.20 mPa s at 120 °C. The values of apparent viscosity retention of 55.41 mPa s, 59.95 mPa s and 52.97 mPa s were observed in solutions of 10000 mg L-1 NaCl, 1200 mg L-1 MgCl2, and 1200 mg L-1 CaCl2, respectively. These were better than those of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide under the same conditions. In addition, an increase of up to 14.52% in the oil recovery rate compared with that for water flooding could be achieved in a core flooding test using a 2000 mg L-1 copolymer solution at 65 °C.

Biotic recovery following the end-Permian mass extinction was investigated using trace fossil and facies analysis of two Lower–Middle Triassic sections in South China. The Susong section (Lower Yangtze Sedimentary Province) comprises a range of carbonate and mudstone facies that record overall shallowing from offshore to intertidal settings. The Tianshengqiao section (Upper Yangtze Sedimentary Province) consists of mixed carbonate and siliciclastic facies deposited in shallow marine to offshore settings. Griesbachian to Dienerian ichnological records in both sections are characterized by low ichnodiversity, low ichnofabric indices (1–2) and low bedding plane bioturbation indices (1–2). Higher ichnofabric indices (3 and 4), corresponding to a dense population of diminutive ichnotaxon, in the Tianshengqiao section suggest opportunistic infaunal biotic activity during the earliest Triassic. Ichnological data from the Susong section show an increase in ichnodiversity during the late Smithian with 11 ichnogenera identified and increased ichnofabric indices of 4–5 and bedding plane bioturbation indices of 3–5. Although complex traces such as Rhizocorallium are present in Spathian-aged strata in this section, low ichnodiversity and ichnofabric indices and diminutive Planolites suggest a decline in recovery. In the Tianshengqiao section, ichnofabric indices are moderate to high (3–5) although only six ichnogenera are present and Planolites burrows are consistently small in Smithian and Spathian strata. Complex traces, such as large Rhizocorallium and Thalassinoides, and large Planolites, did not appear until the Anisian. Ichnological results from both sections record the response of organisms to unfavourable environmental conditions although the Susong section shows earlier recovery during the Smithian prior to latest Smithian–Spathian decline. This decline may have resulted from a resurgence of euxinic to anoxic marine environment in various regions of South China. Ichnological data from the Tianshengqiao section indicate protracted recovery throughout the Early Triassic as previously found elsewhere in South China. Comparison of the South China trace fossil records with global ichnological data show a diachronous pattern of recovery of trace makers and highlights the heterogeneous development of oxic facies on the marked variation in recovery rate.

Objective: This study assesses the long-term cost-effectiveness of a comprehensive model of mental health care for first-episode psychosis. The study is an extension of a previous economic evaluation of the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) that assessed the first-year costs and outcomes of treatment.

Method: The current study used a matched, historical control group design with a follow-up of approximately 8 years. Complete follow-up data were available for 65 of the original 102 participants. Direct public mental health service costs incurred subsequent to the first year of treatment and symptomatic and functional outcomes of 32 participants initially treated for up to 2 years at EPPIC were compared with a matched cohort of 33 participants initially treated by generic mental health services. Treatment-related resource use was measured and valued using Australian published prices.

Results: Almost 8 years after initial treatment, EPPIC subjects displayed lower levels of positive psychotic symptoms (P = .007), were more likely to be in remission (P = .008), and had a more favorable course of illness (P = .011) than the controls. Fifty-six percent of the EPPIC cohort were in paid employment over the last 2 years compared with 33% of controls (P = .083). Each EPPIC patient costs on average A$3445 per annum to treat compared with controls, who each costs A$9503 per annum.

Conclusions: Specialized early psychosis programs can deliver a higher recovery rate at one-third the cost of standard public mental health services. Residual methodological limitations and limited sample size indicate that further research is required to verify this finding.

Purpose

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between clinical macular changes and retinal function in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods
We recruited 357 participants with visual acuity of better than 20/60 in the study eye, including 64 individuals with normal fundi and 293 AMD participants classified into 12 subgroups based upon the International Classification and Grading System. Visual function in the study eye was assessed using two steady-state tests (achromatic 14 Hz flicker [F14Hz] and isoluminant blue color [BCT]) and two adaptation measurements (cone photo-stress recovery rate [CRR] and rod dark adaptation recovery rate [RRR]). The groups were compared on their average psychophysical measurements and ranked according to functional deficiency.

Results
Both adaptation parameters were significantly abnormal when only hard and/or intermediate drusen were evident (compared to controls, P < 0.023) and yielded considerably worse outcomes in cases with more advanced fundus changes (P < 0.001), but provided limited ability to discriminate between these cases (linear trend, CRR t = 0.68, P = 0.50 and RRR t = 1.76, P = 0.08). Steady-state measurements, however, declined gradually along the entire hierarchy of fundus changes (linear trend, F14Hz t = 10.16, P < 0.001 and BCT t = 11.19, P < 0.001) with F14Hz being able to detect significant functional change as early as in the intermediate drusen group, when compared to controls (P = 0.003).

Conclusions
Steady state thresholds (F14Hz and BCT) and clinical signs showed significant concordance across the spectrum of early AMD fundus changes. This suggests that these tests may be an effective tool for monitoring progression of AMD to supplement clinical grading.

In this paper, for the first time, polypyrrole-coated electrospun nanofibre mats have been used as separation membranes to electrolessly recover Au from aqueous [Au(III)Cl4]− solutions, based on a continuous-flow membrane separation process. With a [Au(III)Cl4]− solution passing through the nanofibre membrane, the Au(III) ions were converted into elemental Au. The gold recovered was deposited on the nanofibre membranes in the form of Au particles, as confirmed by EDX and XPS measurements. It has been found that the polypyrrole-coated electrospun nanofibres are good candidate membrane material for the recovery of Au, and the recovery efficiency is affected by the membrane thickness, the permeate flux rate and the initial [Au(III)Cl4]− concentration.

Objective: We assessed the effect of weight loss on blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate during rest, psychological stress, and recovery after stress.

Methods: Two groups of men completed two mental stress tests 12 wk apart. The control group continued their usual diet, whereas the weight-loss group underwent a dietary weight-loss program in which they were randomized to a high-fruit/vegetable and low-fat dairy diet or a low-fat diet.

Results: Fifty-five men with a baseline BP of 125.9 ± 6.9/83.6 ± 7.1 mmHg (mean ± SD) completed the study (weight-loss group, n = 28; control group, n = 27). The weight-loss group lost weight (mean ± SEM, −4.3 ± 0.3 versus +0.4 ± 0.4 kg, P = 0.001) compared with controls and had a significant decrease in resting systolic BP (SBP; −2.0 ± 1.1% versus +2.0 ± 1.1%, P < 0.05). There was a greater decrease in SBP (P < 0.05) and pulse rate (P < 0.05) at all time points during the stress test in the weight loss compared with the control group. At week 12, SBP in 23 (82%) subjects in the weight-loss group and 24 (89%) in the control group returned to resting levels, with recovering levels in the weight-loss group returning to resting levels 6.1 ± 2.6 min earlier than in the control group (P < 0.05). There was an overall greater decrease in diastolic BP (DBP; P < 0.05) and DBP during recovery up to 27 min after stress (P < 0.05) in the high-fruit/vegetable and low-fat dairy diet group (n = 14) compared with the low-fat diet group (n = 14).

Conclusion: A 5% loss of weight decreased BP during rest and returned SBP to resting levels faster, thus decreasing the period of increased BP as a result of mental stress, which is likely to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in the long term.

Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) are conspicuous, top-level predators in coastal waters of south-eastern Australia that were over-harvested during the 1800s and have had a delayed recovery. A previous species-wide estimate of live pups in 2002 recorded a near-doubling of annual pup production and a 5% annual growth rate since the 1980s. To determine if pup production increased after 2002, we estimated live pup numbers in 2007. Pups were recorded at 20 locations: 10 previously known colonies, three newly recognised colonies and seven haul-out sites where pups are occasionally born. Two colonies adjacent to the Victorian coast accounted for 51% of live pups estimated: Seal Rocks (5660 pups, 25.9%) and Lady Julia Percy Island (5574 pups, 25.5%). Although some colonies were up and some were down in pup numbers, the 2007 total of 21 882±187 (s.e.) live pups did not differ significantly from a recalculated estimate of 21 545±184 in 2002, suggesting little change to overall population size. However, the colonisation of three new sites between 2002 and 2007 indicates population recovery has continued.

In this study, a series of fibrous membranes made from cellulose acetate (CA) and polyester urethane (PEU) by co-electrospining or blend-electrospining were evaluated for drug release kinetics, in vitro anti-microbial activity and in vivo would healing performance when used as wound dressings. To stop common clinical infections, an antibacterial agent, Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) was incorporated into e-spun fibres. The presence of CA in the wound healing membrane was found to improve hydrophilicity and permeability to air and moisture. The in vivo tests indicated that the addition of PHMB and CA considerably improved the wound healing efficiency. CA fibres became slightly swollen upon contacting with the wound exudates. It can not only speed up the liquid evaporation but also create a moisture environment for wound recovery. The drug release dynamics of membranes was controlled by the structure of membranes and component rations within membranes. The lower ration of CA:PEU retained the sound mechanical properties of membranes, and also reduced the boost release effectively and slowed down diffusion of antibacterial agent during in vitro tests. The controlled-diffusion membranes exert long-term anti-infective effect.

A compression cell designed to fit inside an NMR spectrometer was used to investigate (i) the in situ dynamic strain response and structural changes of the internal pore network, and (ii) the diffusion and flow of interstitial water, in full thickness cartilage samples as they were mechanically deformed under a constant compressive load (pressure) and then allowed to recover (swell again) when the load was removed. Selective enzymatic digestion of the collagen fibril network and the glycopolysaccharide hyaluronic acid (HA) was performed to mimic some of the structural and compositional changes associated with osteoarthritis. Digestion of collagen gave rise to mechanical ‘dynamic softening’ and—perhaps more importantly—nearly complete loss in the ability to recover through swelling, both effects due to the disruption of the hierarchical structure and fibril interconnectivity in the collagen network which adversely affects its ability to deform reversibly and to properly regulate the pressurization and resulting rate and direction of interstitial fluid flow. In contrast, digestion of HA inside the collagen pore network caused the cartilage to ‘dynamically stiffen’ which is attributed to the decrease in the osmotic (entropic) pressure of the digested HA molecules confined in the cartilage pores that causes the network to contract and thereby become less permeable to flow. These digestioninduced changes in cartilage’s properties reveal a complex relationship between the molecular weight and concentration of the HA in the interstitial fluid, and the structure and properties of the collagen fibril pore network, and provide new insights into how changes in either could influence the onset and progression of osteoarthritis.

During the hot working of austenitic stainless steels the shape of the flow curve is strongly influenced by the strain rate. Low strain rate deformation results in flow curves typical of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) but as the strain rate increases the shape changes to a ‘flat-top’ curve. This has traditionally been thought to indicate no DRX is taking place and that dynamic recovery (DRV) is the only operating softening mechanism. Examining the work-hardening behaviour and corresponding deformation microstructures showed this is not the case for austenitic stainless steel, as clear evidence of dynamic recrystallization process can be seen. The post-deformation recrystallization kinetics can be modelled using a standard Avrami equation with an Avrami exponent, n, of 1.15. With an increasing value of the Zener-Hollomon parameter it was found that the kinetics of recrystallization become less strain rate sensitive until at the highest values (highest strain rates/lowest temperatures) the recrystallization kinetics become strain rate insensitive.

Achieving an appropriate balance between training and competition stresses and recovery is important in maximising the performance of athletes. A wide range of recovery modalities are now used as integral parts of the training programmes of elite athletes to help attain this balance. This review examined the evidence available as to the efficacy of these recovery modalities in enhancing between-training session recovery in elite athletes. Recovery modalities have largely been investigated with regard to their ability to enhance the rate of blood lactate removal following high-intensity exercise or to reduce the severity and duration of exercise-induced muscle injury and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Neither of these reflects the circumstances of between-training session recovery in elite athletes. After high-intensity exercise, rest alone will return blood lactate to baseline levels well within the normal time period between the training sessions of athletes. The majority of studies examining exercise-induced muscle injury and DOMS have used untrained subjects undertaking large amounts of unfamiliar eccentric exercise. This model is unlikely to closely reflect the circumstances of elite athletes. Even without considering the above limitations, there is no substantial scientific evidence to support the use of the recovery modalities reviewed to enhance the between-training session recovery of elite athletes. Modalities reviewed were massage, active recovery, cryotherapy, contrast temperature water immersion therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, compression garments, stretching, electromyostimulation and combination modalities. Experimental models designed to reflect the circumstances of elite athletes are needed to further investigate the efficacy of various recovery modalities for elite athletes. Other potentially important factors associated with recovery, such as the rate of post-exercise glycogen synthesis and the role of inflammation in the recovery and adaptation process, also need to be considered in this future assessment.
