Control of polymerization reactors is a challenging issue for researchers due to the complex reaction mechanisms. A lot of reactions occur simultaneously during polymerization. This leads to a polymerization system that is highly nonlinear in nature. In this work, a nonlinear advanced controller, named fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is developed for monitoring the batch free radical polymerization of polystyrene (PS) reactor. Temperature is used as an intermediate control variable to control polymer quality, because the products quality and quantity of polymer are directly depends on temperature. Different FLCs are developed through changing the number of fuzzy membership functions (MFs) for inputs and output. The final tuned FLC results are compared with the results of another advanced controller, named neural network based model predictive controller (NN-MPC). The simulation results reveal that the FLC performance is better than NN-MPC in terms of quantitative and qualitative performance criterion.

Catalase, an oxidoreductase enzyme, works as a detoxification system inside living cells against reactive oxygen species formed as a by-product of different metabolic reactions. The enzyme is found in a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Catalase has also been employed in various analytical and diagnostic methods in the form of biosensors and biomarkers in addition to its other applications in textile, paper, food and pharmaceutical industries. New applications for catalases are constantly emerging thanks to their high turnover rate, distinct evolutionary origin, relatively simple and well-defined reaction mechanisms. The following review provides comprehensive information on isolation, production and purification of catalases with different techniques from various microbial sources along with their types, structure, mechanism of action and applications.

The power of isotopic substitution for the elucidation of a reaction mechanism is illustrated with reactions named after Hofmann and Favorskii. These reactions have important roles in synthetic chemistry; therefore, a wide range of experiments involving isotopic labeling or kinetic isotope effects were employed to establish their mechanistic pathways. The concepts introduced by these investigations are drawn together with an isotopic labeling study of the oxidation of urea with hypohalites. The two mechanisms proposed for this reaction have been described as a Hofmann rearrangement and a nitrogen analogue of the Favorskii rearrangement.

One of the major problems associated with the use of polypyrrole (PPy) in a practical engineering application is its poor thermal stability at elevated temperatures, especially in the presence of oxygen and moisture. Several authors have shown that enhanced stability can be achieved through treatment with simple acids and bases. This paper presents a summary of the possible structural changes which occur as a result of these treatments and those that appear to be related to enhanced conductivity stability. A slight increase in conductivity (10–20%) is observed for acid treated PPy films which is found to be the result of protonation of the pyrrole structure. This effect is dramatically enhanced by treatment at high temperatures where an increase in conductivity of >84% can be achieved. Base treatment of the PPy films results in the deprotonation of the pyrrole structure leading to the loss of conductivity (>40%). Preliminary X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results indicate that both acid and base treatment resulted in the elimination of reactive sites for oxygen. Long term thermal ageing of these treated films were conducted at 150 °C in air. The conductivity decay behaviour was found to follow multiple first order chemical reaction kinetics.

Meta-analysis and meta-regression were used to evaluate whether evidence to date demonstrates deficits in procedural memory in individuals with specific language impairment (SLI), and to examine reasons for inconsistencies of findings across studies. The Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (PDH) proposes that SLI is largely explained by abnormal functioning of the frontal-basal ganglia circuits that support procedural memory. It has also been suggested that declarative memory can compensate for at least some of the problems observed in individuals with SLI. A number of studies have used Serial Reaction Time (SRT) tasks to investigate procedural learning in SLI. In this report, results from eight studies that collectively examined 186 participants with SLI and 203 typically-developing peers were submitted to a meta-analysis. The average mean effect size was .328 (CI95: .071, .584) and was significant. This suggests SLI is associated with impairments of procedural learning as measured by the SRT task. Differences among individual study effect sizes, examined with meta-regression, indicated that smaller effect sizes were found in studies with older participants, and in studies that had a larger number of trials on the SRT task. The contributions of age and SRT task characteristics to learning are discussed with respect to impaired and compensatory neural mechanisms in SLI.
