Past research has obtained mixed findings in relation to gender differences and other factors that shape ideal body image. The current study was designed to investigate these differences further, using a digital body image program to assess body image individually. As expected, females desired a body that was smaller than their current size, whereas males were split between wanting a smaller and larger body. The perceived messages from peers and parents were consistent with the individual's ideal image. Gender differences were also found with ratings of attractiveness and effectiveness. Females rated messages from peers and parents as more important than did males. For both males and females, opposite sex peers were the most important influences, and parents the least important.

This article started as a response to a decision by Deakin University's Law School late last year to embark upon a major recruitment of new staff. That decision caused the writer to wonder what published sources of advice were available to assist aspiring legal academics in choosing and shaping a career. To date it would seem that whilst there is no dearth of sources about what law schools should teach, or on the content and structure of the curriculum, research on the selection and formation of academics is somewhat less common. This is changing. In 2003 a short biographical study of six law teachers, based on structured interviews, was published and in 2004, a major study of the identity of 54 law teachers became available. There have also been significant studies on the particular issues encountered by female academics in the legal academy.

Developing a lean muscular figure for the purposes of sports and/or appearance has become a central issue for males. Concern has been raised because the desire to develop such a body build may lead to the adoption of numerous health-threatening behaviors. Consequently, this review presents a comprehensive analysis of the physical and psychological consequences that result from the use of steroids (legal and illegal), ephedrine, and deleterious dieting strategies specific to males. Putative risk factors for these behaviors will be identified, and the clinical disorder associated with the extreme abuse of these behaviors, muscle dysmorphia, will be examined.

Consumer’s participation in service delivery is so central to cognition that it affects consumer’s quality evaluations. The study presented in this paper investigates the ways that visitor expectations change as a result of first hand experience with a service in the context of a major art exhibition. The research design allowed for two operational definitions of expectations, namely forecast and ideal expectations, in order to investigate differences between respondents’ pre and post experiences with a service. A total of 550 respondent visitors were interviewed during a major art exhibition, using two questionnaires delivered to two sub samples of respondents. The primary questionnaire was designed to capture recalled expectations after visitation while the parallel questionnaire captured forecast expectations prior to visitation and perceptions in the post experience phase. The findings suggest that forecast expectations were different to ideal expectations in both qualitative and quantitative ways and that these differences had important implications for perceptions of service quality. These differences can be explained, at least in part, by the way that expectations are formed and by the way that expectations are shaped by the actual visitation experience. For market researchers, the question of when and how to measure expectations has important implications for research design.

The game of golf requires hitting a ball from a range of lies over a range of distances in environments that include many obstacles to be avoided. Each of these different golf shots arc designed to move the ball from the tee to the hole in the least number of strokes. However, the fundamental assumption that seems to underlie the coaching of golf, particularly to novice players, is that acquisition of an ideal basic golf swing is the most important outcome of coaching. Implicit in this view are three further assumptions. The first is that once this ideal basic golf swing is acquired by players, they are able to complete a game of golf in a competent manner even though this requires a range of different shots. The second is that there is a close correspondence between the quality of execution of any golf swing as judged in terms of this ideal swing, and the quality of outcome of the golf shot of which the swing is a part, as judged by where the ball comes to rest. The third assumption is that visual inspection of the golf swing by a coach can reveal inadequacies which can be remedied leading lo improved performance in the game of golf. The research reported in this thesis is an investigation of these assumptions. The rationale underlying coaching of golf was examined by reviewing the golf coaching literature (Chapter 1) and conducting a survey of professional golf coaches (Chapter 2). Results of the literature review and the survey indicated that the major emphasis of golf coaching of novices was on their acquiring what might be described as an ideal basic golf swing. This typically involved identifying components in sequence. Little emphasis was placed during this stage of coaching on what might be described as the complete action of a golf shot which involves hitting a ball to some target location. To examine the assumption that there was a close correspondence between the quality of execution of the golf swing and the quality of the outcome of a golf shot, two studies were conducted. In Chapter 3 the development of a 70-item checklist to be used to evaluate the quality of execution of a golf swing is reported. This checklist was based on a detailed behavioural analysis of the golf swing involving collaboration with relevant experts (i.e., golf coaches, biomechanist, kinesiologist), and information derived from a review of golf coaching materials. Development of the checklist was an iterative process in which earlier versions were used to evaluate sample golf swings, and problems identified during this lest process were used to improve the checklist. The final 70-item checklist comprised of a static component with three parts (left-hand grip; right-hand grip; stance) and a dynamic component with six parts (half backswing; full backswing; half downswing; ball contact; half followthrough; finish position). This version of the checklist was used in a study (reported in Chapter 4) of the relationship between the judged quality of execution of a golf swing and the outcome accuracy of a golf shot. Three groups of golfers with varying ability and experience were required to hit 50 balls with a 9-iron club to a target. Outcome accuracy for each shot was assessed in terms of the distance between the target and the resting location of the ball. Edited videotapes (showing only execution of the golf swing) of the five most, and five least accurate shots produced a sub-sample of these golfers (four professional players; four novice players) were subsequently viewed by three expert coaches. They independently rated using the checklist, the quality of execution of the 80 golf swings in random order without having information about the accuracy of any shot. As expected, the professional golfers completed more accurate golf shots than did the novices, and the golf swings completed by the professionals were rated more highly than those completed by the novices. However, for both groups of golfers the results indicated that there was no clear relationship between the rated quality of execution of golf swings and the outcome accuracy of the shots of which the swing were the initial part. Chapter 5 provides a summary and overview of the research reported in Chapter 1 to 4. It is argued that this research suggests a need for a change of emphasis in golf coaching away from consideration of the golf swing in isolation to consideration of the golf swing as part of a complete action. That is, the quality of execution of a golf swing should not be judged simply in relation to some ideal set of golf-swing components, but rather in relation to how well the completed swing (i.e., the golf shot) achieves the desired aim of propelling the ball from its present location to the target location.

What I have called the Ideal of Cultivation is a fundamental ethical principle of civilisation, originated by aristocratic warriors in Greek antiquity who held that the true purpose of humanity is to perfect nature

It was then professed that individuals and even entire peoples could consciously develop and improve themselves in a way that was thought to obey the original lawful impulses of nature, a process which was likened to those of agriculture and animal husbandry.

Subsequently the cognate idea of a politics of cultivation arose which deemed that society should be organised specifically to produce more virtuous or perfect human types. Given their fundamental association with Hellenism both ideas have been revisited constantly in the intellectual history of the west, and most notably during the great secular periods, the Renaissance and Enlightenment when active attempts were made to retrieve the ideals of antiquity. Both ideas were particularly pervasive in the German enlightenment, the Aufklärung, and were assimilated by the succeeding Romantic generation.

In nineteenth century Germany, when interest in these ideas was quickly waning, the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche acquired an unswerving attachment to them and made the service of them his life's work.

The intention of this essay is to trace methodically the appearance of the Ideal of Cultivation in Nietzsche's philosophy and politics, and to outline his responses to a world which was abandoning the principles in which he deeply believed. This essay should be regarded as a case study in the long history of a fundamental ethical idea rather than one about the philosopher Nietzsche.

Issues such as anxiety, alienation, crises and concerns over self-identity typify this era of uncertainty. These are also recognised themes of Existentialism and have implications for educational practice and research. The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, it aims to clarify Existentialism, as too often it is mistakenly assumed to refer to an atomistic view of the individual, who is able to exercise absolute freedom. This clarification refers primarily to the works of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Heidegger.

The second purpose is to present an outline of a particular existential framework. This is mainly structured around the notion of the learner, who is characterised as being in relation, culturally embedded, alienated and a meaning-maker. These attributes have direct implications for the ideal of 'the educated person' - an often-articulated 'aim' of education programmes. Becoming educated, according to this framework, means becoming authentic, spiritual, critical, empathetic, and having personal identity.

A third purpose is to argue how educators may usefully employ such a framework. By engaging with it, educators are able to examine effective pedagogical approaches using notions of 'the existential crisis' and anxiety. In this way, educational curriculums, programmes and policies can also be critiqued using this framework.

Given that adolescence is a critical period for the development of a positive self-concept and body image, it is imperative that educators have an understanding of adolescent students' body image and their dieting practises and behaviours. Negative body image is an issue that is rife within the adolescent student population in Australia and around the world, and is a factor that is commonly associated with and linked to disturbed eating behaviours and chronic eating disorders like Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Despite the intuitive appeal and importance of investigating adolescents' body image in terms of what adolescents would like to look like and what they think that they look like now, very little research has investigated these concepts. Furthermore, very little research has explored whether there is a difference between these two constructs how this may affect adolescents' self-esteem. This study therefore aimed to explore the actual and ideal body images of adolescent high school girls aged between 12 and 18 years in two samples of adolescents, one with eating disorders (n=76, clinical sample) and one without (n=823 high school sample). Additionally, this study investigates these constructs in relation to self-esteem levels. The results of this study have important implications for educators and clinicians within educational and clinical settings.

This paper reports on the third phase of a study of Australian Teaching and Learning Centres to identify factors that contribute to the effective strategic leadership of Centres. Focus groups at 10 Australian universities included 66 respondents, providing a diverse range of perspectives, from students to members of the university executive. Analysis of participant contributions extended findings from prior project phases and the wider literature. They also contributed to the final construction of the strategic leadership Teaching and Learning Centre maturity framework presented here. Centres remain in a state of flux, enduring regular reconfiguration. For most Centres, their level of interaction with students is low and increased engagement with students would be of benefit. Perceptions of Centres vary widely, reinforcing the importance of a strategic partnership between the University’s Senior Executive, the Centre and faculties as a prerequisite for implementing identified high-impact strategies for improvement in teaching and learning.

William Wardell’s St John’s College, Sydney, considered the grandest and architecturally most distinguished university college in New South Wales, is an exceptional example of 19th century Gothic Revival architecture.  The information board outside the college states that St John’s is ‘a rare realisation of Pugin’s ideal Catholic College’ and further that ‘it demonstrates [Pugin]’s profound influence on the work of Wardell’. This is but a small part of the story. The commission for St John’s College was far more complex.  The correspondence between the architects, William Wardell, Edmund Blacket and others, and St John’s Council indicates that right from the beginning there was a general lack of understanding of Wardell’s original design concept for the building. This has continued to the present day, as evidenced by the information on the board outside St John’s College, in which it is incorrectly assumed that Wardell’s proposal included a quadrangle as featured in Pugin’s ‘ideal College’. This paper, based largely on primary sources, investigates such claims about St John’s, considers William Wardell and the Gothic Revival, examines St John’s College within the University of Sydney – its design and its translation and posits a few conclusions leading to new understandings.

BACKGROUND: The IPAA has become established as the preferred technique for restoring intestinal continuity postproctocolectomy. The ideal pouch design has not been established. W-pouches may give better functional results owing to increased volume, whereas the J-pouch’s advantage is its straightforward construction. We report short- and long-term results of an randomized control trial designed to establish the ideal pouch.

DESIGN: Ninety-four patients were randomly assigned to J- and W-pouches (49:45) and assessed at 1 and 8.7 years postoperatively. Assessment was questionnaire based and designed to assess pouch function and patient quality of life.

RESULTS: Eighty-five percent of patients were followed up at 1 year, and 68% were followed up at 8.7 years. At 1 year, there was a significant difference in 24-hour bowel movement frequency J- vs W-pouches 7 vs 5(p < 0.001) and in daytime frequency J- vs W-pouches 6 vs 4 (p < 0.001), with no difference in nocturnal function. At 9-year follow-up, function had equilibrated between the 2 groups: 24-hour bowel movement frequency J- vs W-pouches 6.5 vs 6 (p = 0.36), daytime frequency 5.5 vs 5 (p = 0.233), and nocturnal function 1 vs 1 (p = 0.987). Mean operating time of J- and W-pouches was 195 and 215 minutes (p < 0.05). All other parameters, pad usage, urgency, incontinence, and quality of life, did not differ significantly between groups.

CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate that the theoretical functional advantage conferred on the W-pouch by its greater volume exists only in the short term and is of little consequence to patients’ long-term quality of life. This advantage is attenuated as the pouches mature, resulting in no disparity in pouch function. This, combined with the more consistent, efficient, and easily taught construction of the J-pouch, should conclusively establish it as the optimum ileal-pouch design.
