A position sensorless Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (SPMSM) drive based on flux angle is presented in this paper. The motor equations are written in rotor fixed d-q reference frame. A PID controller is used to process the speed error to generate the reference torque current keeping the magnetizing current fixed. The estimated stator flux using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is used to find out the rotor position. The flux angle and the reference current phasor angle are used in vector rotator to generate the reference phase currents. Hysteresis current controller block controls the switching of the 3-phase inverter to apply voltage to the motor stator. Simulation studies on different operating conditions indicate the acceptability of the drive system. The drive system only requires a speed transducer and is free from position sensor requirement. The proposed control scheme is robust under load torque disturbances and motor parameter variations. It is also simple and low cost to implement in a practical environment.

This article presents a simple and reliable method for controlling the relative orientation between the two magnetic fields of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Finding the initial (at motor powering- up time) value of this relative location is essential for the proper operation of the motor. After showing the system controllability, the utilized feedback control loop finds this initial relative orientation quickly and accurately. Further, using the proposed method allows considerable cost saving, as a transducer that is usually used for this purpose can be eliminated. The cost saving is most obvious in the case of linear motors and angle motors with large diameters. The way the problem is posed is an essential part of this work, and it is the reason behind the apparent simplicity of the solution. The method proposed relies on a single sensor, and it was tested when a relative encoder was used.

A software replacement for the commutation signals of a permanent magnet brushless motor is presented. The feedback observed acceleration loop or equivalently the high-order position polynomial controller allows finding the initial relative orientation between the two magnetic fields of the motors within a fraction of a second. Also, using the proposed method allows a considerable cost saving, since the transducer that is usually used for this purpose can be eliminated. The cost saving is most obvious in the case of linear motors and angle motors with large diameters. The way the problem is posed is an essential part of this work and it is the reason behind the apparent simplicity of the solution. The method has been tested when a relative encoder was used and the motor current was regulated.

A position sensorless Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (SPMSM) drive based on single layer Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is presented in this paper. The motor equations are written in rotor fixed d-q reference frame. A PID controller is used to process the speed error to generate the reference torque current keeping the magnetizing current fixed. The RNN estimator is used to estimate flux components along the stator fixed stationary axes. The flux angle and the reference current phasor angle are used in vector rotator to generate the reference phase currents. Hysteresis current controller block controls the switching of the three phase inverter to apply voltage to the motor stator. Simulation studies on different operating conditions indicate the acceptability of the drive system. The proposed estimator can be used to accurately measure the motor fluxes and rotor angle over a wide speed range. The proposed control scheme is robust under load torque disturbances and motor parameter variations. It is also simple and low cost to implememnt in a practical environment

This paper presents a comprehensive analytical subdomain model together with its field solutions for predicting the magnetic field distributions in surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines. The tooth tips and slotting effects during open-circuit, armature reaction, and on-load conditions are considered when deriving the model and developing its solutions. The model derivations and field solutions are extended from a previous model, and can be applied to PM machines with any combinations of slot and pole numbers and any magnetization patterns in the magnets. This model is initially formulated according to Laplace's and Poisson's equations in 2-D polar coordinates by the separation of variables technique in four subdomains, such as magnet, airgap, winding slots, and slot-openings. The field solution of each subdomain is obtained applying the appropriate boundary conditions and interface conditions between every two subdomains, respectively, which can precisely account for the mutual influence between slots. Finite element analysis (FEA) is later deployed to validate the analytical results in a surface-mounted PM machine that has nonoverlapping winding arrangement. For validation purposes, PM machines having 3-slot/2-pole with parallel magnetization and 12-slot/10-pole with either parallel or radial magnetizations are used for comparisons. Computation of global quantities for the motor which include the phase back-EMF and cogging torque is also included. The results indicate that the proposed analytical model can accurately predict the magnetic field distributions in each subdomain and the motor's global quantities, which are in good agreement with those obtained from the FEA.

Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are popular in both industrial and domestic applications because of its high efficiency, power density, and reliability as compared with the conventional types of electrical machines. Generally, the analytical models and their field solutions are preferable to provide an accurate insight of the PMSM performances, instead of using the finite element models, because the former takes a considerably shorter computational time. PMSM design could have different properties of either slotted or slotless, or varieties of magnet placement on the rotor. By focusing on semi-closed surface-mounted PMSMs, the 2D analytical subdomain model in [1] demonstrates an accurate prediction of the magnetic fields that can facilitate the evaluation of the global quantities of PMSMs, such as cogging torque (Tcog), back-EMF, and total harmonic distortion (THDv). Previously, researchers investigated the influences of the machine performance by a single factor, e.g., the variation of Tcog during changes of magnet pole-arc (αP) [2, 3], or slot-opening [2, 3]. These investigations normally considered two types of magnetization patterns, i.e., parallel (PaM) and radial magnetization (RM). Therefore, the motivation of our work hinges on predicting the optimum value of αP in designing a surface-mounted PMSM under influence of four different magnetization patterns, using the analytical subdomain model.

This paper presents simple methods of determining parameters of interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous generator such as magnet flux (λM), d-axis inductance (Ld) and q-axis inductance (Lq) of IPM synchronous generator, which are used to control the wind turbine generator. These methods are simple and do not require any complex theory, signal injection or special equipment. Moreover, a sensorless speed estimator is proposed to estimate the speed of the generator without using speed sensor. The measured parameters are used in this speed estimator. The elimination of speed sensor will enhance the system robustness and reduce the design complexity and system cost for a small-scale wind turbine considered in this paper. The effectiveness of parameter measurement methods and sensorless speed estimator is demonstrated by experimental results. Experimental results show that the proposed speed estimator that uses the measured parameters can estimate the generator speed with a small error.

This paper presents a novel fast speed response control strategy for the poly-phase induction motor drive system based on flux angle. The control scheme is derived in rotor field coordinates and employs the estimation of the rotor flux and its position. An adaptive notch filter is proposed to eliminate the dc component of the integration of signals used for the rotor flux estimation. To improve the performance of the rotor flux estimator, derivative term of the back emf is incorporated in the system. The voltage components in the synchronous reference frame are generated in the controllers which are transformed to stationary reference frame for driving the motor. Space vector modulation technique is used here. Simulation of the drive system was carried out and the results were compared with those obtained for a system that produces the above mentioned voltage components using the conventional PI controller. It is observed that the proposed control methodology provides faster response than the conventional PI controller incorporated system.
