The paper examines the role that organisational structure plays in the new product development process. Various new product development organisational structures are examined and their influence on new product development activities is explained. A review of the literature on organisational structure alternatives for new product development is presented. The research found that the most common organisational structure used for new product development was the product manager and marketing manager.

According to the marketing literature and marketing textbooks, market research is required for successful marketing. However organisations differ in the way they both manage and resource their market research. This study hypothesised that market research effectiveness would be a function of internal research buying expertise, resource allocation and strategy. The research was conducted among a sample of 240 Australian marketing managers. Market research effectiveness was measured in terms of a) decision making support, b) contribution to marketing strategy, c) leveraging customer and competitor data, d) its ability to represent the "voice of the customer" and finally, e) bolstering the role of the marketing group and marketing manager within the organisation. The findings showed that having dedicated internal market researchers and allocating internal and external resources to the research function enhanced market research effectiveness. It was also found that organisations with an entrepreneurial strategic orientation were more likely to see value in the market research function, with these organisations being less likely to use market research for internal political purposes.

This article presents a case study for college sports management classes. The case discusses the Australian Touch (football) Association, (ATA) and their governance review. The ATA moved to an independently elected board of directors in 2002, and the case describes how these board members are elected within this new organizational system. The reasoning and rationale for the review are also presented. Evidence is provided detailing the ATA's financial and structure prior to the 2002 organizational review.

Demutualisation became a global trend amongst financial sector firms in the last two decades of the twentieth century. Changes to the organisational foundations of mutual firms represented a shift in operational cultures and have often been viewed as an end point or demise of the co-operative business model. It is the intention of this article to investigate the extent to which this was the case within a major mutual institution, the Australian Mutual Provident, Australia's oldest and largest mutual insurer. The article's key argument is that the concept of mutuality is organic, and that within this organisation it evolved as the structure of the firm became more sophisticated as it developed from a supplier of life insurance products into a sophisticated financial services provider, which ultimately generated internal pressures to demutualise.

Reports the results of a study which investigated the moderating role of managers’ value orientation towards innovation (VOI) on the relationships between managers’ organisational commitment and two management control features – decentralised organisational structure and budgetary participation. Data for the study were collected from 116 managers in manufacturing firms. The results indicate that managers’ VOI has a significant moderating effect on the relationships between the two management control features and managers’ organisational commitment. The results reveal that the relationships are stronger for managers with high VOI than for managers with low VOI. These results have implications for enhancing managers’ organisational commitment through the design of management control systems appropriate for the extent of innovative work values promoted by organisations.

Careful consideration by managers of the potential impact of the popular strategy of economic restructuring (downsizing) on organisational structure and culture could improve the quality of organisational knowledge sharing, however this influence has not yet been addressed in the knowledge management literature. This paper explores how a strategy of downsizing may reshape organisational structure and culture and inhibit organisational knowledge sharing, drawing on an interpretive case study of knowledge sharing in an information technology services function at a large Australian education service provider. Key findings indicate that when specialised teams are downsized, subcultures may develop where teams become mistrustful and insular, and knowledge sharing is constrained across teams. Further, when a hierarchical structure is present and downsizing occurs, managers may become more cautious about sharing knowledge with subordinates. The study also suggests that Internet technologies may play a key role in helping to compensate for the shortfall in knowledge stock resulting from downsizing. In conclusion, this paper highlights an important need for companies to consider the potential negative influences of downsizing on organisationalknowledge sharing.

In 1954 the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP) undertook a major organisational restructure. This reform provided the foundation upon which the Society was able to develop into a diversified financial intermediary in the following decades. This paper investigates the changing organisational structure within Australia's largest life insurer as it evolved from a branch structure to a multi-divisional form of management in the 1950s. The specialisation encouraged by the divisional system allowed the development of higher order routines upon which the executive could draw. The resulting growth and sophistication of the organisation in the late 1950s ensured higher order routines were able to develop to promote further development.

Organisational downsizing has proven a popular strategic intervention in the new globalised competitive business environment. Yet surprisingly little research has been conducted in the knowledge management domain to help scholars and managers better understand the effects of downsizing on organisational knowledge sharing. This paper reports some of the key findings from an interpretive investigation of organisational knowledge sharing in a division of large Australian organisation where downsizing had recently taken place. The findings reveal structural and cultural effects stemming from downsizing, and shows how these effects influenced knowledge sharing. The paper provides sets of knowledge-based impacts of downsizing on (1) organisational structure and (2) organisational culture at the case organisation. Important implications for knowledge management research and practice are discussed.

This chapter reports the results of a feasibility study into electronic collection of service data at “point of delivery” for disability programs. The investigation revealed that while the proposed system would have produced more fine-grained data, it would not have improved any actor’s knowledge of service delivery. The study illustrated the importance of context in the transition from data to knowledge; the diffused and fragmented organisational structure of social service administration was shown to be a major barrier to effective building and sharing of knowledge. There was some value in the collection of detailed service data but this would have damaged the web of relationships which underpinned the system of service delivery and on which the smooth functioning of that system depended. The study recommended an approach to managing the informal and tacit knowledge distributed among many stakeholders, which was not especially technologically advanced but which supported, in a highly situated manner, the various stakeholders in this multi-organisational context.

Over the last few years, perceptions of the importance of eHealth have increased rapidly, together with the use of IS&T in the delivery of health and social services. Although “e” approaches to health and social services have much potential, they are not panaceas, and the use of new technologies in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of such systems cannot be considered in isolation from their wider context. eHealth systems remain complex socio-organisational systems and, as we will argue and illustrate through this case study, require that a balanced approach to feasibility and desirability analysis be taken.

The case study in this paper describes a feasibility study into the potential effectiveness of a smartdevice-based electronic data collection and payment system which was proposed for the provision of disability services. A key finding of the study was that the most significant impediment to such a system was the highly diffused, fragmented, interlocking organisational structure of the social service administration itself. Rather than raise issues specific to the implementation or diffusion of new technologies in designing e-health services, it raised issues associated with decision making and control in such an environment, and with the design of the underlying organisational system: for service provision, the level of detail required in the service data, and the locus of decision-making power among the stakeholders.

In our account we illustrate the existence of multiple, incommensurate but valid perceptions of the human service provision problem, and discuss the implications for developers or managers of information systems in the arena of e-health or governance. We examine this environment from sociological and information systems perspectives, and confirm the usefulness of socio-organisational approaches in understanding such contexts.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences between “pure” and “mixed” marketing strategies in terms of implementation practices and performance. The strategies compared use the Miles and Snow (1978) typology to develop Pure Prospectors, Pure Defenders, Reactors and Mixed strategies the latter strategy type being similar to Analysers.

Previous strategy type implementation research has used debatable strategy classification methodologies and has not isolated “pure” marketing strategies. The purpose of this paper is to clearly identify and separate “pure” marketing strategies from “mixed” strategies.

In terms of strategy implementation a key finding was that the Miles and Snow implementation recommendations made in the 1970’s no longer appear to be appropriate in the 2000’s This appears to be the case because no need to align human resource practices and organisational structure with strategy was apparent in our findings.

In terms of strategy performance differences a key finding was that Pure Prospectors outperformed Reactor strategies in terms of new markets, sales growth, new products and market share. However, the financial costs of investing in new markets and new products undertaken by the aggressive Pure Prospector strategies results in only similar ROI performance to other strategies. This is consistent with the concept of performance equifinality.

The Porter strategy types of Differentiation and Cost Leadership are put forward as strategies leading to competitive advantage (Porter 1980). These types have quite contrasting implementation guidelines in terms of human resources, organisational structure, job design decision-making process, control systems, and information systems. These internal contrasts suggest Differentiators and Cost Leaders require contrasting roles for market research and internal CRM systems. Very few studies have explored the contingent role business strategy may have in explaining contrasting roles in marketing information systems or market research.

This study involved a cross-industry postal survey of 240 Australian marketing managers. One contribution of this study was to find market research having quite different roles in supporting Marketing (i.e. brand) Differentiators compared to Product (i.e. innovative feature) Differentiators. Surprisingly only one market research role differed when comparing Cost Leaders with Marketing Differentiator strategies. A final contribution was to find that no one strategy having a greater reliance on internal CRM systems in supporting decisionmaking.

Deakin University has established a major integrated corporate technology infrastructure in the last two years to enhance and bring together its distance education and on-campus education. This environment has been called Deakin Online. With Deakin Online rapidly developing, efforts are beginning to focus more fundamentally on how the potentials of the environment can be realised to create enduring teaching and learning value. This search must be understood in the context of the University’s commitment to the values of relevance, responsiveness and innovation. The question is: how can these values be realised in the digitally-based evolving educational enterprise using the new corporate technologies and new concepts of organisational structure and function? We argue for the transforming role of the academic teacher and new forms of open academic collegiality as being critical to realise strategic and enduring educational value. Moreover, change in role and process needs to be grounded in more systemic organisation and program-wide approaches to designing and working within the new contemporary learning environments. We believe the shift from the dangers of product centricism to system-wide education design modelling situating e-learning within broader curricular and pedagogical concerns represents the best strategy to create enduring educational benefits for all stakeholder groups (notably academic teachers and their learners) while preserving teachers’ sense of agency in the changing learning environments of higher education.

At last year's ACIS conference in Melbourne a panel titled 'IS: A discipline in crisis' discussed issues relating to be in disability of IS in Australia. It is not, however, just the Australian IS discipline that must deal with problems such as the need for better organisational structures and greater visibility in universities. This paper presents a comparison between the German Business Informatics discipline and the Australian Information Systems discipline. The objective is to provide another perspective on the IS discipline to raise new ideas and stimulate discussion with reference to the organisational structure of our discipline in universities.

The idea that new product development is vital to many organisations'  business survival and growth is widely acknowledged. New products provide many business opportunities for organisations. The relationship between  new product development and business strategy is critical, as corporate  purpose and scope sets the guidelines for new product planning. This paper examines the new product development process in the Australian grocery organisations and the influence of strategic planning on new product  development. Top management’s skills and vision in addressing various  issues in new product development are vital to business success. The research findings highlighted the importance of top managements support during new product development phases. Creating an innovative culture within an organisation should be a management priority, so new product ideas can be generated from various levels in the organisation.
