It is supposed that there should be a thermal electric effect if a dc current is applied across two dissimilar conducting polymers, similar to so called “Peltier effect” in metals or semiconductors. However, this hypothesis has not been tested on conducting polymers and using these materials to make cooling fabrics has never been attempted before. Polypyrrole coated fabrics were used to test the hypothesis in this preliminary study. Seebeck and the Peltier effects were proven to exist. However, thermoelectricity effect between two conducting polymer coated fabric samples was only about 10 μV/°C. Cooling effect by conductive polymer powder was achieved but performance was unsteady due to electrical degradation of the conducting polymer. Nevertheless, the concept was demonstrated and the development of a cooling fabric is possible.

High pressure die casting (HPDC) is a versatile process for producing engineered metal parts by forcing molten metal under high pressure into reusable steel dies. However there are a large number of attributes involved which contribute to the complexity of the process. A novel integrated approach is developed to optimize the high pressure die casting processes. The die temperature profiles will be studied with infrared thermograph technology and the internal cooling system will be optimized to provide even cooling to the components and the die. The heat stored in the die and the components is studied with image processing. Based on the geometrical profile of the components, cooling channels can be redesigned to improve the cooling efficiency while the cooling time is reduced. This will not only significantly improve the quality of the castings but also improve the productivity of the process.

Water shortage is a major problem facing the power industry in many nations around the world. The largest consumer of water in most power plants is the wet cooling tower. To assist water and energy saving for thermal power stations using conventional evaporative wet cooling towers, a hybrid cooling system is proposed in this paper. The hybrid cooling system may consists of all or some of an air pre-cooler, heat pump, heat exchangers, and adsorption chillers together with the existing cooling tower. The hybrid cooling system described in the paper, consisting of a metal hydride heat pump operating in conjunction with the existing wet cooling tower, is capable of achieving water saving by reducing the temperature of warm water entering the cooling tower. Cooler inlet water temperatures effectively reduce the cooling load on existing towers. This will ultimately reduce the amount of water lost to the air by evaporation whilst still achieving the same cooling output. At the same time, the low grade waste energy upgraded by the metal hydride heat pump, in the process of cooling the water, can be used to replace the bleed of steam for the lower stage feed heaters which will increase overall cycle efficiency.

This thesis proposes the concept of a hybrid cooling system to minimise water consumption in thermal power stations. It identifies that a significant amount of water can be potentially saved by the proposed system. Additional energy input requirements were less than previous approaches considered.

The effects of Si and Mn contents on transformation temperature r3, transformed microstructure and mechanical properties of three kinds of low-carbon steels during continuous cooling were investigated. A r3 rises by 15-25°C when increasing Si content from 0.50% to 1.35%, and it drops by 30-50°C when increasing Mn content from 0.97% to 1.43%. The effect of Mn on A r3 is more significant than Si. Si stimulates the precipitation of the high-temperature equiaxed ferrite to suppress the bainite transformation, but Mn not only provides the grain refining of transformed microstructure but also stimulates the forming of bainite. The homogeneous and grain refining diphase ferrite/bainite steel (w(Si)=0.56, w(Mn)=1.43) can be obtained after deformed at 850°C and cooled at the rate 30°C/s, of which the tensile strength is up to 654 MPa.

This paper discusses an attempt to examine pre-service teachers’ mathematical modelling skills. A modelling project investigating relationships between temperature and time in the process of cooling of coffee was chosen. The analysis was based on group written reports of the cooling of coffee project and observation of classroom discussion. Findings showed that pre-service teachers were able to model the process of cooling of coffee as a decreasing exponential function. Difficulties with interpretation of the constant rate of cooling and reinterpretation of mathematical model were identified.
