Despite a large body of literature focusing on how the normal aging process affects quality of life, little is known about how aging influences the lives of those who use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). This article explores issues relevant to aging and AAC, examining the responses of 78 augmented communicators aged 30 years and older who participated in a larger national survey of 270 adults with cerebral palsy. The survey sought information about health, modes of communication, and access to information. The results indicate that those involved in the AAC field must work with individuals who use augmentative communication to ensure that they maintain their health, well-being, and effective communication as they age.

In addition, increasing research interest in age-related declines in gait that might predispose individuals to falls has engendered a very extensive literature concerning ageing effects on gait. While rapid locomotor adjustments are common in the course of daily activities there has been no previous review of the findings concerning gait adaptations when walking is terminated both rapidly and unexpectedly. The aims of this review were first, to summarise the key research findings and methodological considerations from studies of termination. The second aim was to demonstrate the effects of ageing and gait pathologies on termination with respect to the regulation of step characteristics, lower-limb muscle activation patterns and foot–ground reaction forces.

Urinary incontinence and frailty are both highly prevalent in older adults. Workshop goals include review of available evidence on frailty and differentiation from normal physiological aging. The influence of frailty on continence in older adults will be examined. Presentations will explore associated risks such as falls, pressure ulcers, and nursing home placement, as well as barriers and facilitators of continence care in various living environments. The role of urodynamics and various treatments will be considered. A majority of the session will focus on interactive discussion of case-based examples of common but challenging clinical situations seen in frail older adults.

Community arts can provide older people with opportunities to enhance quality of life, provide a sense fulfillment, and create a space for teaching, learning and sharing. Our research question asks how and why do older Australian people active in society engage with craft. This article discusses one particular case study from a larger ongoing joint research project, Well-being and ageing: community, diversity and the arts in Victoria. This project, begun in 2008 has been undertaken by academic researchers from two metropolitan Australian universities in Melbourne, Victoria (Deakin University and Monash University). This research has entailed a number of case studies of individual visual and performing arts community organizations that cater for older people active in community. This phenomenological qualitative case study sought in-depth understandings of the group of découpeurs (all members of the Découpage Guild Australia). Phenomenological research entails an exploration of participants’ lifeworlds, experiences, understandings, and perceptions. The data are reported under three over-arching themes: Learning and Teaching; Being Creative; and Well-being. This study has demonstrated that craft engagement can provide participants with new learning experiences, teaching opportunities in a collaborative community, an outlet for their creativity, and fosters an enhanced sense of self and well-being.

Short telomeres are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Here we studied cardiomyocyte telomere length at key ages during the ontogeny of cardiac hypertrophy and failure in the hypertrophic heart rat (HHR), and compared these with the normal heart rat (NHR) control strain. Key ages corresponded with the pathophysiological sequence beginning with fewer cardiomyocytes (2-days), leading to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (13-weeks) and subsequently progression to heart failure (38-weeks). We measured telomere length, tissue activity of telomerase, mRNA levels of telomerase reverse transcriptase (Tert) and telomerase RNA component (Terc), and expression of the telomeric regulator microRNA miR-34a. Cardiac telomere length was longer in the HHR compared to the control strain at 2-days and 38-weeks, but shorter at 13-weeks. Neonatal HHR had higher cardiac telomerase activity and expression of Tert and miR-34a. Telomerase activity was not different at 13- or 38-weeks. Tert mRNA and Terc RNA were over-expressed at 38-weeks, while miR-34a was over-expressed at 13-weeks but down-regulated at 38-weeks. Circulating leukocytes were strongly correlated with cardiac telomere length in the HHR only. The longer neonatal telomeres in HHR are likely to reflect fewer foetal and early postnatal cardiomyocyte cell divisions and explain the reduced total cardiomyocyte complement that predisposes to later hypertrophy and failure. Although shorter telomeres were a feature of cardiac hypertrophy at 13-weeks, they were not present at the progression to heart failure at 38-weeks.
