In this paper we propose a Geometrically Based Single Bounce Elliptical Model (GBSBEM) for multipath components involving randomly placed scatterers in the scattering region with sensors deployed on a field. The system model assumes a cluster based wireless sensor network (WSN) which collects information from the sensors, filters and modulates the data and transmit it through a wireless channel to be collected at the receiver. We first develop a GBSBE model and based on this model we develop our channel model. Use of Smart antenna system at the receiver end, which exploits various receive diversity combining techniques like Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC), Equal Gain Combining (EGC), and Selection Combining (SC), adds novelty to this system. The performance of these techniques have been proved through matlab simulations and further ahead based on different number of antenna elements present at the receiver array, we calculate the performance of our system in terms of bit-error-rate (BER). Based on the transmission power we quantify for the energy efficiency of our communication model.

In this chapter the authors discuss the physical insight of the role of wireless communication in RFID systems. In this respect, this chapter gives a brief introduction on the wireless communication model followed by various communication schemes. The chapter also discusses various channel impairments and the statistical modeling of fading channels based on the environment in which the RFID tag and reader may be present. The chapter deals with the fact that the signal attenuations can be dealt with up to some level by using multiple antennas at the reader transmitter and receiver to improve the performance. Thus, this chapter discusses the use of transmit diversity at the reader transmitter to transmit multiple copies of the signal. Following the above, the use of receiver combining techniques are discussed, which shows how the multiple copies of the signal arriving at the reader receiver from the tag are combined to reduce the effects of fading. The chapter then discusses various modulation techniques required to modulate the signal before transmitting over the channel. It then presents a few channel estimation algorithms, according to which, by estimating the channel state information of the channel paths through which transmission takes place, performance of the wireless system can be further increased. Finally, the Antenna selection techniques are presented, which further helps in improving the system performance.

We explore the multicast lifetime capacity of energy-limited wireless ad hoc networks using directional multibeam antennas by formulating and solving the corresponding optimization problem. In such networks, each node is equipped with a practical smart antenna array that can be configured to support multiple beams with adjustable orientation and beamwidth. The special case of this optimization problem in networks with single beams have been extensively studied and shown to be NP-hard. In this paper, we provide a globally optimal solution to this problem by developing a general MILP formulation that can apply to various configurable antenna models, many of which are not supported by the existing formulations. In order to study the multicast lifetime capacity of large-scale networks, we also propose an efficient heuristic algorithm with guaranteed theoretical performance. In particular, we provide a sufficient condition to determine if its performance reaches optimum based on the analysis of its approximation ratio. These results are validated by experiments as well. The multicast lifetime capacity is then quantitatively studied by evaluating the proposed exact and heuristic algorithms using simulations. The experimental results also show that using two-beam antennas can exploit most lifetime capacity of the networks for multicast communications. © 2013 IEEE.

Neighbor discovery is a crucial step in the initialization of wireless ad hoc networks. When directional antennas are used, this process becomes more challenging since two neighboring nodes must be in transmit and receive states, respectively, pointing their antennas to each other simultaneously. Most of the proposed neighbor discovery algorithms only consider the synchronous system and cannot work efficiently in the asynchronous environment. However, asynchronous neighbor discovery algorithms are more practical and offer many potential advantages. In this paper, we first analyze a one-way handshake-based asynchronous neighbor discovery algorithm by introducing a mathematical model named 'Problem of Coloring Balls.' Then, we extend it to a hybrid asynchronous algorithm that leads to a 24.4% decrease in the expected time of neighbor discovery. Compared with the synchronous algorithms, the asynchronous algorithms require approximately twice the time to complete the neighbor discovery process. Our proposed hybrid asynchronous algorithm performs better than both the two-way synchronous algorithm and the two-way asynchronous algorithm. We validate the practicality of our proposed asynchronous algorithms by OPNET simulations.

This paper deals with the problem of blind equalization of finite-impulse-response (FIR) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels excited by M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) signals. It is known that the algorithms based on the constant modulus (CM) criterion can equalize an FIR MIMO channel that is irreducible. The irreducible condition is restrictive since it requires that all source signals arrive at the receiving antennas simultaneously. In this paper, we show that the CM criterion can also be used to construct a zero-forcing equalizer for a channel that is non-irreducible. We also derive a lower bound for the order of the equalizer. The proposed result is validated by numerical simulations.

In order for underwater robots to communicate with land and air based robots on an equal basis, high speed communications is required. If the robots are not to be tethered then wireless communications is the only possibility. Sonar communications is too slow. Unfortunately radio waves are rapidly attenuated under water due to phenomena such as skin depth. These experiments attempt to extend the range of underwater radio communications.

This thesis presents a solution to the problem of receiving a signal in the shadow and fringe areas. Theoretical and experimental investigation of the field behind an obstacle in a line of sight transmission path for UHF / microwave signals has resulted in a new approach to the analysis of electromagnetic fields in the shadow of an obstacle. Analysis using this approach showed the field to consist of varying amplitude and phase distribution. Additional analysis predicted an increase in received signal could be achieved if correlation between the field and antenna structure could be obtained. This was accomplished with a new antenna design. The thesis presents experimental and photographic evidence to support the theory. A novel technique involving the matching of the antenna structure to the field distribution, resulted in an increase of received signal in the diffracted field of up to 4 dB.

Wireless sensor networks have attracted a lot of attention recently. In this paper, we develop a channel model based on the elliptical model for multipath components involving randomly placed scatterers in the scattering region with sensors deployed on a field. We verify that in a sensor network, the use of receive diversity techniques improves the performance of the system. Extensive performance analysis of the system is carried out for both single and multiple antennas with the applied receive diversity techniques. Performance analyses based on variations in receiver height, maximum multipath delay and transmit power have been performed considering different numbers of antenna elements present in the receiver array, Our results show that increasing the number of antenna elements for a wireless sensor network does indeed improve the BER rates that can be obtained.

Cooperative communication (CC) offers an efficient and low-cost way to achieve spatial diversity by forming a virtual antenna array among single-antenna nodes that cooperatively share their antennas. It has been well recognized that the selection of relay nodes plays a critical role in the performance of CC. Most existing relay selection strategies focus on optimizing the outage probability or energy consumption. To fill in the vacancy of research on throughput improvement via CC, we study the relay selection problem with the objective of optimizing the throughput in this paper. For unicast, it is a P problem, and an optimal relay selection algorithm is provided with a correctness proof. For broadcast, we show the challenge of relay selection by proving it nonprobabilistic hard (NP-hard). A greedy heuristic algorithm is proposed to effectively choose a set of relay nodes that maximize the broadcast throughput. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can achieve high throughput under various network settings.

A compact meandered three-layer stacked circular planar inverted-F antenna is designed and simulated at the UHF band (902.75 – 927.25 MHz) for passive deep brain stimulation implants. The UHF band is used because it offers small antenna size, and high data rate. The top and middle radiating layers are meandered, and low cost substrate and superstrate materials are used to limit the radius and height of the antenna to 5 mm and 1.64 mm, respectively. A dielectric substrate of FR-4 of εr= 4.7 and δ= 0.018, and a biocompatible superstrate of silicone of er= 3.7 and d= 0.003 with thickness of 0.2 mm are used in the design. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 918 MHz with a bandwidth of 24 MHz at return loss of −10 dB in free space. The antenna parameter such as 3D gain pattern of the designed antenna within a skin-tissue model is evaluated by using the finite element method. The compactness, wide bandwidth, round shape, and stable characteristics in skin make this antenna suitable for DBS. The feasibility of the wireless power transmission to the implant in the human head is also examined.

In this paper, we consider an extension of the recently proposed bivariate Markov-switching multifractal model of Calvet, Fisher, and Thompson [2006. "Volatility Comovement: A Multifrequency Approach." Journal of Econometrics {131}: 179-215]. In particular, we allow correlations between volatility components to be non-homogeneous with two different parameters governing the volatility correlations at high and low frequencies. Specification tests confirm the added explanatory value of this specification. In order to explore its practical performance, we apply the model for computing value-at-risk statistics for different classes of financial assets and compare the results with the baseline, homogeneous bivariate multifractal model and the bivariate DCC-GARCH of Engle [2002. "Dynamic Conditional Correlation: A Simple Class of Multivariate Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity Models." Journal of Business & Economic Statistics 20 (3): 339-350]. As it turns out, the multifractal model with heterogeneous volatility correlations provides more reliable results than both the homogeneous benchmark and the DCC-GARCH model. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

This paper considers the sum-rate of wireless broadcast systems with multiple antennas at the base station. In a conventional MIMO-BC system with a large number of users, selecting an optimal subset of users to maximizing the overall system capacity is a key design issue. This paper presents a novel approach to investigate the sum-rate using Eigen Value Decomposition (EVD). Particularly, we derive the lower bound on sum-rate of a conventional MIMO-BC using a completely different approach compared to the existing approaches. The paper formulates the rate maximization problem for any number of users and any number of transmitting antennas using EVD approach of the channel matrix. This also shows the impact of channel angle information on the sum-rate of conventional MIMO-BC. Numerical results confirm the benefits of our technique in various MIMO communication scenarios.
