Fertilisation kinetics theory suggests that, when sperm are limiting, the larger eggs of broadcast-spawning marine organisms ought to be fertilised more frequently than smaller eggs, because they provide a bigger target for searching sperm. Whilst this effect has been demonstrated within species, it is not known if this pattern holds among species. We tested whether a large difference in egg size between congeneric seastars with contrasting planktotrophic and lecithotrophic modes of development results in differences in the likelihood of eggs being fertilised in sperm-limiting situations. Measurement of egg sizes and sperm swimming speeds led to the prediction that the sperm–egg collision rate constant for Patiriella calcar (420-µm-diameter egg) should be nine times greater than for P. regularis (140-µm-diameter egg). Although the eggs of P. calcar should be fertilised at greater rates in low sperm concentrations, they were not. When gametes were allowed to mix for 10 s, the hypothesis that P. calcar eggs required less sperm than P. regularis to ensure 50% of eggs were fertilised was rejected. When gametes were mixed for 5 min, P. regularis eggs were more frequently fertilised, but the difference was not statistically significant. We conclude there must be a difference between these species in the likelihood that when a sperm finds a conspecific egg it can successfully fertilise. This apparent uncoupling of egg size and likelihood of fertilisation suggests that fertilisation is not a major constraint on the evolution of egg size in these seastars.

Bis(3-endo-camphoryl)phosphinic acid (1) was prepared by the reaction of the lithium enolate of D-(+)-camphor and phosphorous trichloride followed by an oxidative work up. Compound 1 crystallizes from wet toluene as monohydrate 1·H2O, which was investigated by X-ray crystallography. Molecules of 1 are associated by strong hydrogen bonds giving rise to the formation of a supramolecular helix. The interior channel of the helix is filled by a one-dimensional (1D) string of water molecules that are also associated by hydrogen bonding. The 1D string adopts a twisted zigzag conformation. Although the hydrogen bond networks are not cross-linked both the screw of the helix and the twist of the 1D string of water molecules are left-handed (M) and controlled by the chiral camphoryl residues situated on the exterior of the helix. The overall supramolecular structure is strongly reminiscent of aquaporin-1, a significant membrane-channel protein responsible for the transport of water into the cells.

Background: Smoking is the largest single cause of preventable death and disease in Australia. This study describes smoking prevalence and the characteristics of rural smokers to guide general practitioners in targeting particular groups.

Methods: Cross sectional surveys in the Greater Green Triangle region of southeast Australia using a random population sample (n=1563, participation rate 48.7%) aged 25–74 years. Smoking information was assessed by a self administered questionnaire.

Results: Complete smoking data were available for 1494 participants. Overall age adjusted current smoking prevalence was 14.9% (95% CI: 13.1–16.7). In both genders, current smoking prevalence decreased with age. Those aged 25–44 years were more likely to want to stop smoking and to have attempted cessation, but less likely to have received cessation advice than older smokers.

Discussion
: This study provides baseline smoking data for rural health monitoring and identifies intervention opportunities. General practice is suited to implement interventions for smoking prevention and cessation at every patient encounter, particularly in younger individuals.

Background: Although there is cross-sectional evidence that changes in the immune system contribute to the pathophysiology of depression, longitudinal data capable of elucidating cause and effect relationships are lacking.

Aims: We aimed to determine whether subclinical systemic inflammation, as measured by serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) concentration, is associated with an increased risk of de novo major depressive disorder.

Method: Major depressive disorder was diagnosed using a clinical interview (SCID-I/NP). This is a retrospective cohort study; from a population-based sample of 1494 randomly selected women recruited at baseline during the period 1994-7, 822 were followed for a decade and provided measures of both exposure and outcome. Of these women, 644 (aged 20-84 years) had no prior history of depression at baseline and were eligible for analysis.

Results: During 5827 person-years of follow-up, 48 cases of de novo major depressive disorder were identified. The hazard ratio (HR) for depression increased by 44% for each standard deviation increase in log-transformed hsCRP (ln-hsCRP) (HR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.04-1.99), after adjusting for weight, smoking and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Further adjustment for other lifestyle factors, medications and comorbidity failed to explain the observed increased risk for depression.

Conclusions: Serum hsCRP is an independent risk marker for de novo major depressive disorder in women. This supports an aetiological role for inflammatory activity in the pathophysiology of depression.

With few exceptions, an inverse relationship exists between social disadvantage and disease. However, there are conflicting data for the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and BMD. The aim of this study was to assess the association between SES and lifestyle exposures in relation to BMD. In a cross-sectional study conducted using 1494 randomly selected population-based adult women, we assessed the association between SES and lifestyle exposures in relation to BMD. BMD was measured at multiple anatomical sites by DXA. SES was determined by cross-referencing residential addresses with Australian Bureau of Statistics 1996 census data for the study region and categorized in quintiles. Lifestyle variables were collected by self-report. Regression models used to assess the relationship between SES and BMD were adjusted for age, height, weight, dietary calcium, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, hormone therapy, and calcium/vitamin D supplements. Unadjusted BMD differed across SES quintiles (p < 0.05). At each skeletal site and SES index, a consistent peak in adjusted BMD was observed in the mid-quintiles. Differences in adjusted BMD were observed between SES quintiles 1 and 4 (3-7%) and between quintiles 5 and 4 (2-7%). At the spine, the maximum difference was observed (7.5%). In a subset of women, serum 25(OH)D explained a proportion of the association between SES and BMD (difference remained up to 4.2%). Observed differences in BMD across SES quintiles, consistent across both SES indices, suggest that low BMD may be evident for both the most disadvantaged and most advantaged.

To evaluate the prevalence of osteoporosis at various sites among Australian women, cross-sectional bone mineral density (BMD) data for adult females was obtained from an age-stratified population-based sample (n = 1494; 20–94 yr) drawn at random from the Barwon Statistical Division, a population characteristic of Australia. Age- and weight- (and for three sites, height) matched reference ranges for BMD at the lumbar spine, proximal femur, forearm, and total body were developed using regression techniques. The cutoff BMD level for osteoporosis at the PA spine was 0.917 g/cm2 and 0.713 g/cm2 at the femoral neck according to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The upper cutoff level for osteopenia was 1.128 g/cm2 at the PA spine and 0.913 g/cm2 for the femoral neck. The proportion of Australian women categorized as having osteoporosis at the PA spine, femoral neck, or midforearm ranged from 0.9% among those aged 40–44 yr to 87.0% for those older than 79 yr. This study provides reference data representative of the Australian female population. A large proportion of elderly Australian women has osteoporosis according to the WHO guidelines.

The carbon diffusion in steel, where the carbon diffusivity varies with the carbon content, was solved with the integral methods under the third boundary condition. The variation of carbon diffusivity in steel with the carbon content was described with two different functions, linear dependence and exponential dependence. The integral approximation for both cases was improved with the numerical computation to more accurately predict the carbon profiles. The integral solution is more accurate than the formulation based on the assumption of a constant diffusivity or those based on the assumption of a constant diffusivity and/or constant carbon content at part surface. It is also more easily used in practice than the numerical method to describe the carburising process and predict the carbon content at steel surface and carbon profiles in treated layer.

Whilst there is good evidence for negative impacts of introduced rat species on island ecosystems, the effects of house mice (Mus musculus) are generally less well documented. In some situations, introduced house mice can exert severe impacts, particularly where this is the only introduced mammal. Here, we examine the distribution, relative abundance and breeding success of small burrowing seabirds on Steeple Jason Island, Falklands, in relation to habitat types and the distribution of house mice which is the sole introduced mammal species, and we make comparisons with seabird distribution and densities on the neighbouring island of Grand Jason where mice are absent. Grey-backed storm-petrel (Garrodia nereis) and Wilson's storm-petrel (Oceanites oceanicus), which due to their extremely small size are likely to be the most vulnerable to mouse predation, were considerably more abundant on mouse-free Grand Jason than on Steeple Jason. Grey-backed storm-petrel, which are typically associated with tussac grass, avoided this habitat on Steeple Jason where it is associated with high levels of house mouse activity (assessed from the proportion of wax baits gnawed overnight), whereas on mouse-free Grand Jason, there was no such avoidance. Wilson's storm-petrel nesting on Steeple Jason suffered high rates of egg and chick loss. Whilst we found evidence for detrimental impacts of house mice on the two small storm-petrel species, there was no relationship between relative mouse activity levels and the distribution or abundance of the larger thin-billed Prion (Pachyptila belcheri). © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Background: The social gradient of health and mortality is well-documented. However, data are scarce regarding whether differences in mortality are observed across socio-economic status (SES) measured at the small area-level. We investigated associations between area-level SES and all-cause mortality in Australian women aged ≥. 20. years. Methods: We examined SES, obesity, hypertension, lifestyle behaviors and all-cause mortality within 10. years post-baseline (1994), for 1494 randomly-selected women. Participants' residential addresses were matched to Australian Bureau of Statistics Census data to identify area-level SES, and deaths were ascertained from the Australian National Deaths Index. Logistic regression models were adjusted for age, and subsequent adjustments made for measures of weight status and lifestyle behaviors. Results: We observed 243 (16.3%) deaths within 10. years post-baseline. Females in SES quintiles 2-4 (less disadvantaged) had lower odds of mortality (0.49-0.59) compared to SES quintile 1 (most disadvantaged) under the best model, after adjusting for age, smoking status and low mobility. Conclusions: Compared to the lowest SES quintile (most disadvantaged), females in quintiles 2 to 5 (less disadvantaged) had significantly lower odds ratio of all-cause mortality within 10. years. Associations between extreme social disadvantage and mortality warrant further attention from research, public health and policy arenas.
