An AA6082 alloy was subjected to eight passes of equal channel angular pressing at 100 °C, resulting in an ultrafine grain size of 0.2 to 0.4 µm. The tensile deformation behavior of the material was studied over the temperature range of 100 °C to 350 °C and strain rate range of 10¯4 to 10¯11. The evolution of microstructure under tensile deformation was investigated by analyzing both the deformation relief on the specimen surface and the dislocation structure. While extensive microshear banding was found at the lower temperatures of 100 °C to 150 °C, deformation at higher temperatures was characterized by cooperative grain boundary sliding and the development of a bimodal microstructure. Dislocation glide was identified as the main deformation mechanism within coarse grains, whereas no dislocation activity was apparent in the ultrafine grains.

This work focuses on the deformation behavior of an ultra-fine grained Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. The effect of temperature and strain rate on the homogeneity of plastic deformation, the evolution of microstructure, the strain rate sensitivity and the underlying deformation mechanisms are investigated. It is demonstrated that the localization of plastic deformation at the micro scale is triggered by grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary diffusion. The contributions of different deformation mechanisms during the plastic deformation of the material are discussed.

A Mg-5 wt.%Al-2 wt.%Nd alloy has been prepared by a powder metallurgical route using a blend of two dissimilar alloy powders. The initial consolidation of the powders was achieved through a single equal channel angular extrusion pass at 150 °C. After heat treatment at temperatures between 420 °C and 530 °C, it was possible to produce a microstructure that consisted of a uniform distribution of Al3Nd and Al11Nd3 precipitates in a magnesium matrix. These precipitates displayed distinct orientation relationships with the matrix. The size and shape of the precipitates depended on the heat treatment temperature and time. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The effect of additions of Nb, Al and Mo to Fe-C-Mn-Si TRIP steel on the final microstructure and mechanical properties after simulated  thermomechanical processing (TMP) has been studied. The laboratory simulations of discontinuous cooling during TMP were performed using a hot rolling mill. All samples were characterised using optical microscopy and image analysis. The volume fraction of retained austenite was ascertained using a heat tinting technique and X-ray diffraction measurements. Room temperature mechanical properties were determined by a tensile test. From this a comprehensive understanding of the structural aspect of the bainite transformation in these types of TRIP steels has been developed. The  results have shown that the final microstructures of thermomechanically processed TRIP steels comprise 50 % of polygonal ferrite, 7 - 12 % of retained austenite, non-carbide bainitic structure and martensite. All steels exhibited a good combination of ultimate tensile strength and total elongation. The microstructure-property examination revealed the relationship between the composition of TRIP steels and their mechanical properties. It has been shown that the addition of Mo to the C-Si-Mn-Nb TRIP steel increases the ultimate tensile strength up to 1020 MPa. The stability of the retained austenite of the Nb-Mo steel was degraded, which led to a decrease in the elongation (24 %). The results have demonstrated that the addition of Al to C-Si-Mn-Nb steel leads to a good combination of strength (∼ 940 MPa) and elongation (∼ 30 %) due to the formation of refined acicular ferrite and granular bainite structure with ∼7 - 8 % of stable retained austenite. Furthermore, it has been found that the addition of Al increases the volume fraction of bainitic ferrite laths. The investigations have shown an interesting result that, in the Nb-Mo-Al steel, Al has a more pronounced effect on the microstructure in comparison with Mo. It has been found that the bainitic structure of the Nb-Mo-Al steel appears to be more granular than in the Nb-Mo steel. Moreover, the volume fraction of the retained austenite increased (12 %) with decreasing bainitic ferrite content. The results have demonstrated that this steel has the best mechanical properties (1100 MPa and 28 % elongation). It has been concluded that the combined effect of Nb, Mo, and Al addition on the dispersion of the bainite, martensite and retained austenite in the ferrite matrix and the morphology of these phases is different than effect of Nb, Mo and Al, separately.

Al/MgAl2O4 in situ metal matrix composites have been synthesized using value-added silica sources (microsilica and rice husk ash) containing ~97% SiO2 in Al-5 wt.% Mg alloy. The thermodynamics and kinetics of MgAl2O4 formation are discussed in detail. The MgO and MgAl2O4 phases were found to dominate in microsilica (MS) and rice husk ash (RHA) value-added composites, respectively, during the initial stage of holding the composites at 750 °C. A transition phase between MgO and MgAl2O4 was detected by the scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) analysis of the particles extracted from the composite using 25% NaOH solution. This confirms that MgO is gradually transformed to MgAl2O4 by the reaction 3SiO2(s)+2MgO(s)+4Al(l)→2MgAl2O4(s)+3Si(l). The stoichiometry of MgAl2O4, n, computed by a new methodology is between 0.79 and 1.18. The reaction between the silica sources and the molten metal stopped after 55% of the silica source was consumed. A gradual increase in mean MgAl2O4 crystallite size, D, from 24 to 36 nm was observed in the samples held for 10 h.

Prismatic boron nitride nanorods have been grown on single crystal silicon substrates by mechanical ball-milling followed by annealing at 1300 °C. Growth takes place by rapid surface diffusion of BN molecules, and follows heterogeneous nucleation at catalytic particles of an Fe/Si alloy. Lattice imaging transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a central axial row of rather small truncated pyramidal nanovoids on each nanorod, surrounded by three basal planar BN domains which, with successive deposition of epitaxial layers adapt to the void geometry by crystallographic faceting. The bulk strain in the nanorods is taken up by the presence of what appear to be simple nanostacking faults in the external, near-surface domains which, like the nanovoids are regularly repetitive along the nanorod length. Growth terminates with a clear cuneiform tip for each nanorod. Lateral nanorod dimensions are essentially determined by the size of the catalytic particle, which remains as a foundation essentially responsible for base growth. Growth, structure, and dominating facets are shown to be consistent with a system which seeks lowest bulk and surface energies according to the well-known thermodynamics of the capillarity of solids.

Ultrafine-grain aluminium sheet was produced by rolling at cryogenic (CR) and at room temperature (RTR). Commercial purity aluminium plate was reduced in 30 passes from an initial material thickness of 10 mm to a final thickness of 2 mm (80% reduction). Tensile stress and strength were significantly increased while total elongation was drastically reduced. It was found that despite the low tensile elongation both materials are able to accommodate high localised strains in the neck leading to a high reduction in area. The formability of the material was further investigated in bending operations. A minimum bending radius of 6 mm (CR) and 5 mm (RTR) was found and pure bending tests showed homogeneous forming behaviour for both materials. In V-die bending the cryo-rolled material showed strain localisations across the final radius and kinking of the sample. It has been found that even if the total elongation in tension is close to zero leading to early failure in V-die bending, ultra-fine grained and low ductile sheet metals can be roll formed to simple section shapes with small radii using commercial roll forming equipment.

Stainless steel is the most widely used alloys of steel. The reputed variety of stainless steel having customised material properties as per the design requirements is Duplex Stainless Steel and Austenitic Stainless Steel. The Austenite Stainless Steel alloy has been developed further to be Super Austenitic Stainless Steel (SASS) by increasing the percentage of the alloying elements to form the half or more than the half of the material composition. SASS (Grade-AL-6XN) is an alloy steel containing high percentages of nickel (24%), molybdenum (6%) and chromium (21%). The chemical elements offer high degrees of corrosion resistance, toughness and stability in a large range of hostile environments like petroleum, marine and food processing industries. SASS is often used as a commercially viable substitute to high cost non-ferrous or non-metallic metals. The ability to machine steel effectively and efficiently is of utmost importance in the current competitive market. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the machinability of SASS which has been a classified material so far with very limited research conducted on it. Understanding the machinability of this alloy would assist in the effective forming of this material by metal cutting. The novelty of research associated with this is paper is reasonable taking into consideration the unknowns involved in machining SASS. The experimental design consists of conducting eight milling trials at combination of two different feed rates, 0.1 and 0.15 mm/tooth; cutting speeds, 100 and 150 m/min; Depth of Cut (DoC), 2 and 3 mm and coolant on for all the trials. The cutting tool has two inserts and therefore has two cutting edges. The trial sample is mounted on a dynamometer (type 9257B) to measure the cutting forces during the trials. The cutting force data obtained is later analyzed using DynaWare supplied by Kistler. The machined sample is subjected to surface roughness (Ra) measurement using a 3D optical surface profilometer (Alicona Infinite Focus). A comprehensive metallography process consisting of mounting, polishing and etching was conducted on a before and after machined sample in order to make a comparative analysis of the microstructural changes due to machining. The microstructural images were capture using a digital microscope. The microhardness test were conducted on a Vickers scale (Hv) using a Vickers microhardness tester. Initial bulk hardness testing conducted on the material show that the alloy is having a hardness of 83.4 HRb. This study expects an increase in hardness mostly due to work hardening may be due to phase transformation. The results obtained from the cutting trials are analyzed in order to judge the machinability of the material. Some of the criteria used for machinability evaluation are cutting force analysis, surface texture analysis, metallographic analysis and microhardness analysis. The methodology followed in each aspect of the investigation is similar to and inspired by similar research conducted on other materials. However, the novelty of this research is the investigation of various aspects of machinability and drawing comparisons between each other while attempting to justify each result obtained to the microstructural changes observed which influence the behaviour of the alloy. Due to the limited scope of the paper, machinability criteria such as chip morphology, Metal Removal Rate (MRR) and tool wear are not included in this paper. All aspects are then compared and the optimum machining parameters are justified with a scope for future investigations

Abstract Mg2Si1-xSnx thermoelectric compounds were synthesized through a solid-state reaction at 700 °C between chips of Mg2Sn-Mg eutectic alloy and silicon fine powders. The Al dopants were introduced by employing AZ31 magnesium alloy that contains aluminum. The as-synthesized Mg2Si1-xSnx powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering at 650-700 °C. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the Mg2Si1-xSnx bulk materials were comprised of Si-rich and Sn-rich phases. Due to the complex microstructures, the electrical conductivities of Mg2Si1-xSnx are lower than Mg2Si. As a result, the average power factor of Al0.05Mg2Si0.73Sn0.27 is about 1.5 × 10-3 W/mK2 from room temperature to 850 K, being less than 2.5 × 10-3 W/mK2 for Al0.05Mg2Si. However, the thermal conductivity of Mg2Si1-xSnx was reduced significantly as compared to Al0.05Mg2Si, which enabled the ZT of Al0.05Mg2Si0.73Sn0.27 to be superior to Al0.05Mg2Si. Lastly, the electric power generation from one leg of Al0.05Mg2Si and Al0.05Mg2Si0.73Sn0.27 were evaluated on a newly developed instrument, with the peak output power of 15-20 mW at 300 °C hot-side temperature.

An ultra-fine-grained Al alloy was subjected to compression tests at different strain rates. The strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress was estimated. A strong effect of the baseline strain rate on the mechanisms of plastic deformation was found. It is suggested that a decrease of strain rate results in activation of micro shear banding due to grain boundary sliding. A connection between the strain rate, strain rate sensitivity, and the prevalent deformation mechanism was established.
