Although research on discrimination and health has progressed significantly, it has tended to focus on racial discrimination and US populations. This study explored different types of discrimination, their interactions and associations with common mental disorders among Brazilian university students, in Rio de Janeiro in 2010. Associations between discrimination and common mental disorders were examined using multiple logistic regression models, adjusted for confounders. Interactions between discrimination and socio-demographics were tested. Discrimination attributed to age, class and skin color/race were the most frequently reported. In a fully adjusted model, discrimination attributed to skin color/race and class were both independently associated with increased odds of common mental disorders. The simultaneous reporting of skin color/race, class and age discrimination was associated with the highest odds ratio. No significant interactions were found. Skin color/race and class discrimination were important, but their simultaneous reporting, in conjunction with age discrimination, were associated with the highest occurrence of common mental disorders.

Although initially Australia saw some high-profile successes in antidiscrimination cases for workers with family responsibilities, recent trends in appellate decisions such as Schou suggest that indirect discrimination concepts do not succeed for workers with family responsibilities. The limitations of an individual complaint model to address systemic disadvantage such as that experienced by ‘workercarers’ is simply in too much tension with entrenched expectations surrounding the contract of employment and the ‘ideal’ or ‘unencumbered’ worker. A re-imagining of the employment relationship and the role of the employer will be necessary to achieve substantive equality for workers with family responsibilities.

To date it is well known that the quality of farmed trout is affected by diet composition, by feeding regime, by husbandry practices and by rearing conditions and environment. The trout processing industry and the large-scale retail trade, in consideration of the wide variability of trout quality and characteristics, have imposed, or will soon impose, quality criteria for the end product. Moreover, recent food scares and the malpractices of some food producers have increased public requests
for traceability. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the main chemical quality and the biometrical characteristics of rainbow trout produced in three different farms in Italy (two intensive farms, located one on mountain and one on plain, and an extensive farm in which fish fed only on naturally available nutrients) and to establish whether farmed trout
origins could be differentiated by these parameters. Trout farmed in the intensive mountain farm (IMF) showed the highest crude lipid content in the fillets and the fatty acids of their fillets were characterized by the highest percentage of MUFA. Trout farmed in the intensive plain farm (IPF) were characterized by low dressing percentage, and the lipid of their fillets
was rich in n-6 fatty acids. Trout stocked for the last year of their life in the extensive farm (EF) were leaner both in the carcass and in the fillets. The analysis of flavor volatile compounds showed some differences in the bouquet design, particularly differences in the amounts of n-3 and n-6 derivates volatile aldehydes and alcohols. All data significantly different
(P<0.05) were subjected to Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and 8 variables were chosen to create two discriminant equations generating a strong prediction model for classification of farmed trout respective to their origins.

Appropriate training data always play an important role in constructing an efficient classifier to solve the data mining classification problem. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a comparatively new approach in constructing a model/classifier for data analysis, based on Statistical Learning Theory (SLT). SVM utilizes a transformation of the basic constrained optimization problem compared to that of a quadratic programming method, which can be solved parsimoniously through standard methods. Our research focuses on SVM to classify a number of different sizes of data sets. We found SVM to perform well in the case of discrimination compared to some other existing popular classifiers.

Localities Embracing and Accepting Diversity (LEAD) is an ongoing place-based pilot program aimed at improving health outcomes among Aboriginal and migrant communities through increased social and economic participation. Specifically, LEAD works with mainstream organizations to prevent race-based discrimination from occurring. The partnership model of LEAD was designed to create a community intervention that was evidence-based, effective, and flexible enough to respond to local contexts and needs. LEAD's complex organizational and partnership model, in combination with an innovative approach to reducing race-based discrimination, has necessitated the use of new language and communication strategies to build genuinely collaborative partnerships. Allocating sufficient time to develop strategies aligned with this new way of doing business has been critical. However, preliminary data indicate that a varied set of partners has been integral to supporting the widespread influence of the emerging LEAD findings across partner networks in a number of different sectors.

This paper studies a general two-period model of product line pricing with customer recognition. Specifically, we consider a monopolist who can sell vertically differentiated products over two periods to heterogeneous consumers. Each consumer demands one unit of the product in each period. In the second period, the monopolist can condition the price-quality offers on the observed purchasing behavior in the first period. In this setup, the monopolist can price discriminate consumers in two dimensions: by quality as well as by purchase history. We fully characterize the monopolist's optimal pricing strategy when there are two types of consumers. When the type space is a continuum, we show that there is no fully separating equilibrium, and some properties of the optimal contracts (price-quality pairs) are characterized within the class of partitional perfect Bayesian equilibria.

Research consistently reports higher rates of problematic drinking among lesbian, bisexual and queer women than among heterosexual women, but relatively little research has identified underlying factors. Within this context, the aim of the present study was to qualitatively explore the sociocultural influences on alcohol consumption among lesbian, bisexual and queer women in Australia. An ethnographic study including in-depth interviews and 10 sessions of participant observation was conducted with 25 Australian lesbian, bisexual and queer women. Analysis of transcripts and fieldnotes focused on lesbian, bisexual and queer-related influences on alcohol consumption. Three lesbian, bisexual and queer-related factors were identified that influenced alcohol use: (1) coping, (2) connection and (3) intersections with lesbian, bisexual and queer identity. Most participants reported consuming alcohol to cope with discrimination or to connect with like-minded others. Alcohol use had positive influences for some women through facilitating social connection and wellbeing. Women with a high lesbian, bisexual and queer identity salience were more likely to seek lesbian, bisexual and queer community connection involving alcohol, to publicly identify as lesbian, bisexual and queer and to experience discrimination. National policies need to address underlying causes of discrimination against lesbian, bisexual and queer women. Alcohol policies and clinical interventions should acknowledge the impact of discrimination on higher alcohol consumption amongst lesbian, bisexual and queer women compared with heterosexual women, and should utilise health promotion messages regarding safe drinking that facilitate lesbian, bisexual and queer social connection.

This study was designed to examine the health behaviors as well as the enablers and barriers to health behaviors among Indigenous Australian men. One hundred and fifty Indigenous Australian men in rural, regional, and urban locations were interviewed about their health behaviors. The results revealed several themes of importance: (a) role of community activities, (b) the Indigenous man as a leader and role model, (c) negative impact of discrimination/racism, (d) importance of partner and family, (e) positive and negative role of peer relationships, (f) central role of culturally appropriate health care facilities, and (g) association between employment and health care problems. These findings highlight the importance of broad community-based (rather than individualistic) approaches to promoting health behavior in Indigenous men.

Anti-discrimination law is enforced by a person who has experienced discrimination by lodging a complaint at a statutory equal opportunity agency. The agency is responsible for receiving and resolving discrimination complaints and educating the community; it does not play a role in enforcing the law. The agency relies on ‘carrots’ to encourage voluntary compliance, but it does not wield any ‘sticks’. This is not the case in other areas of law, such as industrial relations, where the Fair Work Ombudsman is charged with enforcing the law — including the prohibition of discrimination in the workplace — and possesses the necessary powers to do so. British academics Hepple, Coussey and Choudhury developed an enforcement pyramid for equal opportunity. This article shows that the model used by the Fair Work Ombudsman reflects what Hepple, Coussey and Choudhury propose, while anti-discrimination law enforcement would be represented as a flat, rectangular structure. The article considers the Fair Work Ombudsman’s discrimination enforcement work to date and identifies some lessons that anti-discrimination law enforcement can learn from its experience.
