Terminal approach navigation for autonomous robots in a sensory network

In this paper we present a technique based on precision guidance approach for the sensor delivery and reception problem between two mobile robots. A slave robot is employed to collect sensors and slack them on a tray carried by the mobile master robot. We define the terminal attitude of the slave robot with respect to the master and present a LQR control approach to solving the problem of achieving a desired terminal approach angle necessary for the appropriate sensor delivery. The approach criteria is defined in terms of both minimizing the miss distance and controlling the slave robot's body attitude with respect to the master robot at the terminal point.

The failure of dissertation advice books : toward alternative pedagogies for doctoral writing

Anxious doctoral researchers can now call on a proliferation of advice books telling them how to produce their dissertations. This article analyzes some characteristics of this self-help genre, including the ways it produces an expert–novice relationship with readers, reduces dissertation writing to a series of linear steps, reveals hidden rules, and asserts a mix of certainty and fear to position readers "correctly." The authors argue for a more complex view of doctoral writing both as text work/identity work and as a discursive social practice. They reject transmission pedagogies that normalize the power-saturated relations of protégé and master and point to alternate pedagogical approaches that position doctoral researchers as colleagues engaged in a shared, unequal, and changing practice

Not so welcoming? United States cross-border insolvency assistance

Examines the recognition of and assistance for foreign insolvency proceedings offered by the US courts under the US Code Title 11 Ch.15 (Bankruptcy Code), with particular reference to the approach to determining a centre of main interests, leading to refusal of recognition of Cayman Islands proceedings, in Re Basis Yield Alpha Fund (Master) and Re Bear Stearns High-Grade Structured Credit Strategies Master Fund Ltd (In Provisional Liquidation). Suggests that the approach under Ch.15 is more restrictive than the previous approach in the US, noting examples from case law under the previous provisions.

Chaotic synchronization of time-delay coupled Hindmarsh–Rose neurons via nonlinear control

Chaotic synchronization of two time-delay coupled Hindmarsh–Rose neurons via nonlinear control is investigated in this paper. Both the intrinsic slow current delay in a single Hindmarsh–Rose neuron and the coupling delay between the two neurons are considered. When there is no control, chaotic synchronization occurs for a limited range of the coupling strength and the time-delay values. To obtain complete chaotic synchronization irrespective of the time-delay or the coupling strength, we propose two nonlinear control schemes. The first uses adaptive control for chaotic synchronization of two electrically coupled delayed Hindmarsh–Rose neuron models. The second derives the sufficient conditions to ensure a complete synchronization between master and slave models through appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals and the linear matrix inequality technique. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The intriguing and forgotten international exchanges in the master plan for the reconstruction of Skopje

At 5:17AM on Friday 26 July 1963, Skopje was struck by an earthquake, which in 17 seconds destroyed approximately 75% of the urban fabric, and changed the course of its history from an unknown town to a city of international focus. Immediate actions and a formidable level of local organization; an unprecedented pouring in of aid from the other Yugoslav republics and from individual nations and organisations; and a monumental role for the United Nations in the co-ordination of international , architectural and urban planning expertise for the city's large-scale and long-term reconstruction, laid the foundation for what has been called 'a precise Marxist revolutionary situation' .1 The detail of the paper concerns Stage 4, Replanning 1963 to 1966 of the planning strategy that was organised into five stages, and has a major interest in the invited United Nations (UN) international competition ~o redesign approximately two square kilometres of the city centre.2 Action is associated with activity as productivity, but in Skopje added to this were symbolic human acts and heroic action such that its inhabitants regained their city and importantly a new position as city in the world.
