This paper reports on an investigation into smoking amongst 14- to 15- year-old Bangladeshis living in an UK inner city locality. A survey using self-completion questionnaires was undertaken in conjunction with focus group discussions. The survey of 316 Bangladeshi adolescents was conducted to determine smoking prevalence. Regular smoking was more common amongst Bangladeshi males (39%) than amongst Bangladeshi females (11%). Thirty-one people (17 females and 14 males) took part in seven focus groups (four female and three male) which were conducted in schools (six) and youth clubs (one). Focus group discussions were conducted to examine what smoking means to Bangladeshi teenagers and factors which influence why they do or do not smoke. Differences between what smoking means to Bangladeshi females and males are identified which arise from perceived social norms and cultural values, and greatly influence smoking uptake. However, many of the reasons why Bangladeshi adolescents continue to smoke, stop smoking or never smoke appear similar to those identified in other studies with largely white adolescents. Factors underpinning adolescent choices together with the implications of the study findings for the development of smoking prevention initiatives for inner city Bangladeshi teenagers are discussed.

Phytophthora cinnamomi is a soil borne plant pathogen that causes devastating disease in many Australian ecosystems and threatens the survival of native flora. Compared with the number of plant species that are susceptible to P. cinnamomi, only a few species are known to be resistant and control of this pathogen by chemicals is difficult and undesirable in natural systems. The major aim of our research is therefore to characterise natural resistance and determine which signalling pathways and defence responses are involved. Our examination of resistance is being approached at several levels, one of which is through the use of the model plant, Arabidopsis. Previously, Arabidopsis had been shown to display ecotypic variation in responses to P. cinnamomi and we are exploring this further in conjunction with the analysis of a bank of Arabidopsis defence pathway mutants for their responses to the pathogen. These experiments will provide a fundamental basis for further analysis of the defence responses of native plants. Native species (susceptible and resistant) are being assessed for their responses to P. cinnamomi at morphological, biochemical and molecular levels. This research also involves field-based studies of plants under challenge at various sites throughout Victoria, Australia. The focus of this field-based research is to assess the responses of individual species to P. cinnamomi in the natural environment with the goal of identifying individuals within susceptible species that display 'resistance'. Understanding how plants are able to resist this pathogen will enable strategies to be developed to enhance species survival and to restore structure and biodiversity to the ecosystems under threat.

Despite its huge uptake all over the world, Twitter is still in its early stages of being used as an educational tool. Here, we present an experiment that was conducted across two undergraduate groups from different universities, an Australian and another American university. In this experiment we looked at Twitter usage in class and compared the results with a particular focus on analysing technology acceptance differences between the two groups. Both groups used Twitter as part of their tutorial work and participated in a survey at the end of the semester. Empirical investigation was done using Davis’ technology acceptance model (TAM). The study findings reveal highly significant differences in the technology acceptance behaviours of the two groups, thus highlight cultural differences in the acceptance of technology, in this case Twitter.
