Despite Wheatstone’s academic interests in the device, the stereoscope languished somewhat as an optical toy. Yet the advent of 3D screen-spaces for home and mass entertainment suggests today’s consumers and practitioners of screen culture hold the view that screen culture will be ‘improved’ through 3D imaging technologies. Like cinema and photography, stereoscopic 3D imaging has the potential to transform visual culture. But what is transformed, as optics and electronic imaging techniques deliver Alice in Wonderland in 3D? This paper links the advent of 3D cinema and TV to the notion that vision is itself a ‘technology of the visual’. As such, our innate binocular stereoacuity is ripe for exploitation by developers of 3D imaging technologies. I argue that contemporary 3D imaging marks an epistemological visual-perceptual shift: toward screenspaces becoming spaces for potential action. Such a shift entails seeing as doing rather than seeing as thinking. 3D imaging exploits binocular vision’s spatial acuity (stereopsis), but is effective only for objects within near distal space. The 3D effect tapers off dramatically for objects only some metres away, because the two retinal images lack significant lateral disparity (difference) to trigger stereopsis: the imagery flattens out and becomes ‘monoscopic’. Information available from conventional 2D media entails a peculiarly unspecified spatiality. Perceptually, the contents of a conventional cinematic screen are like those of a painting: they are situated neither near nor far, and constitute a shared and ambiguous visual space. Our own eyes are like those of a cat: frontally placed for predatory action. The visuality of 3D screen-spaces assumes a perceptuality of the near-by and close at hand, since this is the structure of the visible information to which stereopsis is adapted to respond. Noting the binocular acuity of predatory animals, as well as some etymological links, this paper examines the implications of perceptually ‘capturing’ the sensation of visually solid objects in one’s immediate space. Stereopsis is about decisive action within an immediate environment: but it also presupposes the single viewpoint of an active observer toward which the 3D imagery is targeted.

Lab-on-a-chips are microfluidic devices which include biological laboratory functions on a single chip. They offer great advantages in terms of speed of analysis, precision, low sample and reagent consumption and automation of analysis. An efficient detection method in lab-on-a-chips is essential for the detection and quantification of chemical and biological parameters under examination. This review paper focuses on the recent research on optical detection techniques for LOC applications. Furthermore, several emerging detection paradigms which are still being matured are covered in this paper. Also, an analysis of the performance of different optical detection methods is given.

Optical inspection techniques have been widely used in industry as they are non-destructive. Since defect patterns are rooted from the manufacturing processes in semiconductor industry, efficient and effective defect detection and pattern recognition algorithms are in great demand to find out closely related causes. Modifying the manufacturing processes can eliminate defects, and thus to improve the yield. Defect patterns such as rings, semicircles, scratches, and clusters are the most common defects in the semiconductor industry. Conventional methods cannot identify two scale-variant or shift-variant or rotation-variant defect patterns, which in fact belong to the same failure causes. To address these problems, a new approach is proposed in this paper to detect these defect patterns in noisy images. First, a novel scheme is developed to simulate datasets of these 4 patterns for classifiers' training and testing. Second, for real optical images, a series of image processing operations have been applied in the detection stage of our method. In the identification stage, defects are resized and then identified by the trained support vector machine. Adaptive resonance theory network 1 is also implemented for comparisons. Classification results of both simulated data and real noisy raw data show the effectiveness of our method.

Aim
The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the imaging techniques that are currently used to study the effects of exercise on bone architecture.

Current knowledge
It is now widely accepted that the prevention of osteoporosis must be initiated in childhood, because the immature skeleton is more responsive to physical loading. Exercise recommendations for bone health promotion must consider the effects of loading not only on the more traditional measures of bone mineral content and macroarchitecture, but also on the microarchitecture and structural properties of the skeleton. The latter requires high precision 3D methods like quantitative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Prospects
Imaging resolutions used most commonly in exercise studies of children have sufficient precision to assess bone density and gross geometry. However, they remain insufficient to clearly depict and quantify the trabecular bone microarchitecture in vivo in humans.

Background This study aimed to investigate the relationship between depressive and anxiety disorders and indices of adiposity, including body fat mass and percent body fat, as measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Methods In this observational study of 979 randomly-selected women aged 20–93 years, psychiatric history was ascertained using a structured clinical interview (SCID-I/NP). Total body fat was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and weight, height and waist circumference were measured. Medication use and lifestyle factors were self-reported.

Results Those with a lifetime history of depression had increased fat mass (+ 7.4%) and percent body fat (+ 4.3%), as well as greater mean weight (+ 3.3%), waist circumference (+ 2.9%) and BMI (+ 3.5%) after adjustment for age, anxiety, alcohol consumption, physical activity and past smoking. Furthermore, those meeting criteria for a lifetime history of depression had a 1.7-fold increased odds of being overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 25), a 2.0-fold increased odds of being obese (BMI ≥ 30) and a 1.8-fold increased odds of having a waist circumference ≥ 80 cm. These patterns persisted after further adjustment for psychotropic medication use, smoking status and energy intake. No differences in any measures of adiposity were observed among those with anxiety disorders compared to controls.

Limitations
There is potential for unrecognised confounding, interpretations are limited to women and a temporal relationship could not be inferred.

Conclusions Depression was associated with greater adiposity. The difference in body fat mass was numerically greater than differences in indirect measures of adiposity, suggesting that the latter may underestimate the extent of adiposity in this population.

Maintaining low body weight for the sake of performance and aesthetic purposes is a common feature among young girls and women who exercise on a regular basis, including elite, college and high-school athletes, members of fitness centres, and recreational exercisers. High energy expenditure without adequate compensation in energy intake leads to an energy deficiency, which may ultimately affect reproductive function and bone health. The combination of low energy availability, menstrual disturbances and low bone mineral density is referred to as the ‘female athlete triad’. Not all athletes seek medical assistance in response to the absence of menstruation for 3 or more months as some believe that long-term amenorrhoea is not harmful. Indeed, many women may not seek medical attention until they sustain a stress fracture.
This review investigates current issues, controversies and strategies in the clinical management of bone health concerns related to the female athlete triad. Current recommendations focus on either increasing energy intake or decreasing energy expenditure, as this approach remains the most efficient strategy to prevent further bone health complications. However, convincing the athlete to increase energy availability can be extremely challenging.
Oral contraceptive therapy seems to be a common strategy chosen by many physicians to address bone health issues in young women with amenorrhoea, although there is little evidence that this strategy improves bone mineral density in this population. Assessment of bone health itself is difficult due to the limitations of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to estimate bone strength. Understanding how bone strength is affected by low energy availability, weight gain and resumption of menses requires further investigations using 3-dimensional bone imaging techniques in order to improve the clinical management of the female athlete triad.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the prominent medical imaging techniques. This process is time-consuming and can take several minutes to acquire one image. The aim of this research is to reduce the imaging process time of MRI. This issue is addressed by reducing the number of acquired measurements using theory of Compressive Sensing (CS). Compressive Sensing exploits sparsity in MR images. Randomly under sampled k-space generates incoherent noise which can be handled using a nonlinear image reconstruction method. In this paper, a new framework is presented based on the idea to exploit non-uniform nature of sparsity in MR images, where local sparsity constrains were used instead of traditional global constraint, to further reduce the sample set. Experimental results and comparison with CS using global constraint are demonstrated.

Recognition algorithms that use data obtained by imaging faces in the thermal spectrum are promising in achieving invariance to extreme illumination changes that are often present in practice. In this paper we analyze the performance of a recently proposed face recognition algorithm that combines visual and thermal modalities by decision level fusion. We examine (i) the effects of the proposed data preprocessing in each domain, (ii) the contribution to improved recognition of different types of features, (iii) the importance of prescription glasses detection, in the context of both 1-to-N and 1-to-1 matching (recognition vs. verification performance). Finally, we discuss the significance of our results and, in particular, identify a number of limitations of the current state-of-the-art and propose promising directions for future research.

Electron microscopy techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been invaluable tools for the study of the micromorphology of plant cuticles. However, for electron microscopy, the preparation techniques required may invariably introduce artefacts in cuticle preservation. Further, there are a limited number of methods available for quantifying the image data obtained through electron microscopy. Therefore, in this study, optical microscopy techniques were coupled with staining procedures and, along with SEM were used to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the ultrastructure of plant leaf cuticles. Leaf cryosections of Triticum aestivum (wheat), Zea mays (maize), and Lupinus angustifolius (lupin) were stained with either fat-soluble azo stain Sudan IV or fluorescent, diarylmethane Auramine O and were observed under confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). For all the plant species tested, the cuticle on the leaf surfaces could be clearly resolved in many cases into cuticular proper (CP), external cuticular layer (ECL), and internal cuticular layer (ICL). Novel image data analysis procedures for quantifying the epicuticular wax micromorphology were developed, and epicuticular waxes of L. angustifolius were described here for the first time. Together, application of a multifaceted approach involving the use of a range of techniques to study the plant cuticle has led to a better understanding of cuticular structure and provides new insights into leaf surface architecture.

The nano convergence is a historic event, similar to the advent of cyberspace, which has equal potential disruption. As well as the aesthetics of communication Mario Costa has a technological sublime mediated through imaging techniques, we propose in this work the emergence of an aesthetic of nanocomunicasio, which, in turn, proposes a nanotechnological sublime mediated through technological individuation. While the technological sublime Mario Costa is entirely based on the Kantian sublime, the sublime nanotechnology is inspired by the sublime transimanente Schopenhauer. If the technological sublime Mario Costa is connected to virtuality and reproducibility of digital imaging techniques, we have the sublime nanotechnology refers instead to the materiality and autorreprodutibilidade the principle of individuation.

Lasting glow: Under femtosecond laser irradiation, graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONs) give strong two-photon luminescence (TPL; see picture). The presence of GONs also induces microbubbling, which causes cell death at an order of magnitude lower laser power than when cells are not labeled. The results show that GONs can be used for TPL-based imaging and photothermal cancer therapy.
