Replacement of riparian vegetation by pasture has occurred worldwide and is predicted to have strong effects on macroinvertebrate community structure and function in streams, but this has rarely been examined. In this study, leaf processing and macroinvertebrate community structure were examined in a single stream using experimental leaf-packs and surveys of natural leaf-packs. Two sites in each of three land use categories were selected to represent reaches in forest, pasture and forest-pasture boundary regions. In two experiments using tethered leaf-packs, no differences were found in mean leaf breakdown between land use types. However, shredding invertebrates were absent from the pasture sites, so leaf breakdown in pasture resulted from chemical, physical and microbial processes only. Amounts of fine particulate organic matter in experimental leaf-packs were higher in pasture reaches than the forest and boundary reaches but did not influence leaf breakdown. Macroinvertebrate species richness did not differ between land uses. A predictive model developed for species richness and total abundance enabled direct comparison of assemblages on experimental packs to natural leaf-packs. In the forest reach and at the forest-pasture boundary, macroinvertebrate species richness and total abundance increased proportionally with the number of leaves within a pack, but this relationship was not observed in the pasture reach. Pasture land use on Skenes Creek was therefore associated with weakened relationships between allochthonous inputs and macroinvertebrate communities, but this did not alter leaf breakdown.

The declining popularity of Economics courses, evident in the last decade, has fuelled a debate on the nature of Economics units and the way in which they are taught in tertiary institutions. The effectiveness of traditional teaching methods has been questioned as lecturers search for alternative ways of presenting material and engaging students. In recent times, workshop-based/cooperative tutorials have become more popular in promoting deeper learning. This paper assesses the application of such an approach at a large tertiary institution. It evaluates student perceptions of this tutorial method in an Introductory Macroeconomics first-year unit. An anonymous questionnaire was used. Whilst the sample size is small (n = 56), the results are important in that this is the first such study in Macroeconomics. Students found workshop-based tutorials useful, preferred them over lecture style tutorials, and found that they fostered inclusivity. The importance of tutorials per se, is reiterated. Students state that tutorials are an important adjunct to lectures. This study also looks at students' study habits: finding that on average they spend less than one hour per week studying Economics and most prepare only occasionally for tutorials. The sample studied indicates that there are notable differences in the perceptions of tutorials and teaching methods between the genders and between local and international students. This may impact on the way in which tutorials are conducted effectively.

The interactions between a macro-crack and a cluster of micro-defects are studied numerically by using a series of special finite elements each containing a defect. These special finite elements, which contain defects such as holes, cracks, and inhomogeneities, are developed based on the hybrid displacement, complex potential and conformal mapping techniques. These hybrid-type elements can be used together with the conventional finite elements without any difficulty. Thus, simple finite element models can be devised to study the interactions between a macro-crack and a cluster of micro-defects. In this paper, the mathematical and finite element modeling procedures for the study of the above-mentioned problems are presented.

In the present study, nano- and macro-scale characterisations on the mechanical properties of bovine cortical bones have been performed by using nanoindentation and conventional compressive tests. Nanoindentation results showed that the elastic modulus for the osteons and the interstitial lamellae in the longitude direction were 24.7 ± 2.5 GPa and 30.1 ± 2.4 GPa. As it’s difficult to distinguish osteons from interstitial lamellae in the transverse direction, the average elastic modulus for cortical bovine bone in the transverse direction was 19.8 ± 1.6 GPa. Significant differences were found in the modulus values between different microstructures of bone tissue and in different testing direction. It was found that the elastic modulus of bone bovine material in nano-level was higher than that in macro-level. The elastic modulus and
ultimate stress of large bone samples were 12.5 ± 1.9 GPa and 195 ± 19 MPa respectively from the compression test.

Studies the nutritional requirements and growth of two Australian native freshwater fish. Examines the dietary protein, and lipid requirements of silver perch and Murray cod, and the dietary requirement for essential amino acids and fatty acids of silver perch. Considered the first nutrition study of these species based on feeding trials, dose-response experiments and purified diets.

Montmorillonites are composed of aluminosilicate layers stacked one above the other, and the layer thickness is approximately 1 nm. In this work lithium modified montmorillonite (Li-MMT) was prepared and used as a lithium macro-anion salt in gel electrolytes. It was found that Li-MMT exhibited good compatibility with poly(ethylene glycol), DMSO and the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIdca), and a few of novel gel electrolytes based on Li-MMT were obtained. These gel electrolytes were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, solid state NMR, conductivity measurements and cyclic voltammetry. High conductivities up to 10− 4 to 10− 3 S/cm at room temperature were observed with these macro-anion gel electrolytes. These gel materials were promising to be used as lithium conductive electrolytes in electrochemical devices, such as lithium batteries.
