Two questions emerge from the literature concerning the perceptual-motor processes underlying the visual regulation of step length. The first concerns the effects of velocity on the onset of visual control (VCO), when visual regulation of step length begins during goal-directed locomotion. The second concerns the effects of different obstacles such as a target or raised surface on step length regulation. In two separate experiments, participants (Experiment 1 & 2: n=12, 6 female, 6 male) walked, jogged, or sprinted towards an obstacle along a 10 m walkway, consisting of two marker-strips with alternating black and white 0.50 m markings. Each experiment consisted of three targeting or obstacle tasks with the requirement to both negotiate and continue moving (run-through) through the target. Five trials were conducted for each task and approach speed, with trials block randomised between the six participants of each gender. One 50 Hz video camera panned and filmed each trial from an elevated position, adjacent to the walkway. Video footage was digitized to deduce the gait characteristics. Results for the targeting tasks indicate a linear relationship between approach velocity and accuracy of final foot placement (r=0.89). When foot placement was highly constrained by the obstacle step length shortened during the entire approach. VCO was found to occur at an earlier tau-margin for lower approach velocities for both experiments, indicating that the optical variable ‘tau' is affected by approach velocity. A three-phase kinematic profile was found for all tasks, except for the take-off board condition when sprinting. Further research is needed to determine whether this velocity affect on VCO is due to ‘whole-body' approach velocity or whether it is a function of the differences between gait modes.

This paper has two parts. In Part I, it consists of a letter written by the subject of the ‘case study’ that forms the basis of Part II. Part I demonstrates how the writer Aliki Pavlou discovered that, in attempting to help a friend face uncomfortable truths in relation to his perception of his mother, she inadvertently was able to voice her own dilemma in relation to her mother that hitherto had been elusive.
This paper forms a part of a larger project being researched by Aliki Pavlou, Justin Clemens and me. The study, to be entitled, "In the Heart of Hell: Depression and its Expression," is one that contends that Literature expresses the ineffable nature of depression in its symbolic mode; that, indeed, literary texts reveal in their concealment. The work therefore argues that ‘depression’ is expressible.
Part II of this paper analyses the response of a depressive to Jean-Paul Sartre’s novel Nausea (1964). Beginning with a brief discussion of the role of the ‘mother’ as psychologically pivotal in some depressives’ struggle towards well-being, this section analyses a reading of Nausea by a depressive. The objective of this study was to ascertain the extent to which the condition of nausea, as represented in Sartre’s novel, expresses the experience of depression.

This work reports the first instance of self-organized thermoset blends containing diblock copolymers with a crystallizable thermoset-immiscible block. Nanostructured thermoset blends of bisphenol A-type epoxy resin (ER) and a low-molecular-weight (Mn = 1400) amphiphilic polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (EEO) symmetric diblock copolymer were prepared using 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) as curing agent and were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All the MDA-cured ER/EEO blends do not show macroscopic phase separation but exhibit microstructures. The ER selectively mixes with the epoxy-miscible PEO block in the EEO diblock copolymer whereas the crystallizable PE blocks that are immiscible with ER form separate microdomains at nanoscales in the blends. The PE crystals with size on nanoscales are formed and restricted within the individual spherical micelles in the nanostructured ER/EEO blends with EEO content up to 30 wt %. The spherical micelles are highly aggregated in the blends containing 40 and 50 wt % EEO. The PE dentritic crystallites exist in the blend containing 50 wt % EEO whereas the blends with even higher EEO content are completely volume-filled with PE spherulites. The semicrystalline microphase-separated lamellae in the symmetric EEO diblock copolymer are swollen in the blend with decreasing EEO content, followed by a structural transition to aggregated spherical micellar phase morphology and, eventually, spherical micellar phase morphology at the lowest EEO contents. Three morphological regimes are identified, corresponding precisely to the three regimes of crystallization kinetics of the PE blocks. The nanoscale confinement effect on the crystallization kinetics in nanostructured thermoset blends is revealed for the first time. This new phenomenon is explained on the basis of homogeneous nucleation controlled crystallization within nanoscale confined environments in the block copolymer/thermoset blends.

A series of experiments are reported for compression of an aluminum cylinder with monotonic and cyclic die rotation. When the die is monotonically rotated, a higher angular velocity or a lower compression speed of the tool leads to a greater load reduction in comparison of that seen with a stationary die. The test results also show that cyclic die rotation causes a cyclic fluctuation in the load-displacement curve. During the die deceleration phase, the compression load increases until it reaches the level obtained in conventional compression with stationary dies. However, the compression load is observed to reduce to levels lower than those obtained in monotonic rotating compression tests during the die acceleration phase. The frequency of rotating direction change seems to affect the position of load peaks only, not the amplitude of the peaks.

This paper presents experimental and computational results obtained on the Ford Barra 190 4.0 litres I6 gasoline engine and on the Ford Falcon car equipped with this engine. Measurements of steady engine performance, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were first collected using an automated test facility for a wide range of cam and spark timings vs. throttle position and engine speed. Simulations were performed for a significant number of measured operating points at full and part load by using a coupled Gamma Technologies GT-POWER/GT-COOL engine model for gas exchange, combustion and heat transfer. The fluid model was made up of intake and exhaust systems, oil circuit, coolant circuit and radiator cooling air circuit. The thermal model was made up of finite element components for cylinder head, cylinder, piston, valves and ports and wall thermal masses for pipes. The model was validated versus measured steady state air and fuel flow rates, cylinder pressure parameters, indicated and brake mean effective pressures, and temperature of metal, oil and coolant in selected locations. Computational results agree well with experiments, demonstrating the ability of the approach to produce fairly accurate steady state maps of BMEP and BSFC, as well as to optimize engine operation changing geometry, throttle position, cam and spark timing. Measurements of the transient performance and fuel consumption of the full vehicle were then collected over the NEDC cycle. Simulations were performed by using a coupled Gamma Technologies GT-POWER/GT-COOL/GT-DRIVE model for instantaneous engine gas exchange, combustion and heat transfer and vehicle motion. The full vehicle model is made up of transmission, driveshaft, axles, and car components and the previous engine model. The model was validated with measured fuel flow rates through the engine, engine throttle position, and engine speed and oil and coolant temperatures in selected locations. Instantaneous engine states following a time dependent demand for torque and speed differ from those obtained by interpolating steady state maps of BSFC vs. BMEP and speed. Computational results agree well with experiments, demonstrating the utility of the approach in providing a more accurate prediction of the fuel consumption over test cycles.

Is the industry in chaos? How do we to meet the future information needs of the international scholarly community?

The one certainty is that forecasting is never easy. Libraries, vendors and publishers are all working in a rapidly changing environment. It is a fair prediction that there will be fewer participants and less competition in the marketplace. The potential for libraries to be locked into one vendor for access to electronic journals is real. Whether this access will be in perpetuity, no one can give an absolute guarantee. Intellectual property rights, commercial viability and communication standards are all of concern.

We've seen the vision, what's happening now? The Australian academic and research library market has an international reputation for being informed, frank and through necessity, pragmatic. When planning information access and delivery for the next two to five years we are told libraries need a reasonable indication of what is real. Vendors, more than ever, are contributing to a shared understanding amongst libraries, publishers and vendors of the priorities and concerns of different sectors of the industry.

The present study examines the influence of different contents and types of process control agent (PCA), i.e., stearic acid (SA) and ethylene-bis-stearamide (EBS), on the microstructural evolution and characteristics of Ti-16Sn-4Nb (wt pct) alloy powders and bulk samples. The characterization of the powders and bulk samples was carried out by using chemical analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and X-ray diffractometry. Results indicated that the powder recovered from the ball milling containers increased with increasing amounts of SA and EBS. Furthermore, adding more SA or EBS to the powder mixture resulted in a considerably smaller particle size, with a flaky-shaped morphology for the given ball milling time. Also, a slightly higher effectiveness was found for EBS when compared to SA. Meanwhile, the addition of both SA and EBS led to a delay in the alloy formation during mechanical alloying (MA) and caused contamination of the material with mainly carbon (C) and oxygen (O). An optimum amount of 1 wt pct PCA led to a good balance between cold welding and fracturing, and thus favored the formation of the titanium alloy. The microstructural observation of the bulk alloy showed a homogeneous distribution of fine Nb-rich ß-phase colonies within the α-Ti matrix with the addition of PCA less than 1 wt pct.

To examine the role of prostaglandins in physiologically induced renin release, we reduced renal artery pressure within the autoregulatory range in chronically instrumented conscious dogs with aspirin, indomethacin or no pre-treatment. In untreated dogs, reduction of renal artery pressure to 60 mmHg for 90 min produced rises in plasma renin activity (+ 5.4 +/- 1.0 ng ml.-1 hr-1) and mean arterial pressure (+ 17 +/- 2 mmHg) without significant effect on renal blood flow (n = 13). Aspirin pre-treatment (2 X 25-40 mg kg-1 orally) had no effect on the renin, arterial pressure or renal blood flow responses to renal artery pressure reduction (n = 7). In contrast, indomethacin pre-treatment (2 X 2-3 mg kg-1 orally) significantly lessened the increase in plasma renin activity during reduced renal artery pressure (+ 2.0 +/- 0.3 ng ml.-1 hr-1, n = 11). The relative effectiveness of aspirin and indomethacin in inhibiting prostaglandin production in the kidney was then tested in separate experiments by measuring the renal blood flow responses to renal artery injections of arachidonate (5-200 micrograms kg-1). In the doses used above, aspirin markedly attenuated the blood flow response to arachidonate but indomethacin had almost no effect. Both aspirin and indomethacin abolished the hypotensive effect of intravenous arachidonate (0.5 mg kg-1). These results tentatively suggest that indomethacin may not effectively inhibit renal prostaglandin production in conscious dogs at the doses used in these experiments. Thus the reduced renin release in response to lowered renal artery pressure in indomethacin pre-treated dogs may have been due to another, non-prostaglandin action of indomethacin. The results from the aspirin pre-treated dogs suggest that prostaglandins are not involved in the release of renin in response to reduced renal artery pressure in conscious dogs.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to look at some of the issues surrounding access to and the use of new media technologies, and questions why this is an area of study that receives a marginal focus in academic work.
Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on previous literature in the area of information and communications technology (ICT) adoption and social exclusion, this paper combines the methodological frameworks adopted by hegemony research and more general studies of new media.
Findings – The paper discusses the impacts of new media use by Indigenous communities, within the framework of discussions about a “global Digital Age”. The paper also briefly looks at the social
implications of new media adoption.
Originality/Value - It questions the assumption that adoption and use of new media is for the "good" or "benefit" of all. It will be of value to researchers of ICT adoption by Indigenous communities.

In the present study we expand our analysis of using two contrasting organic solvent additives (toluene and THF) in an ionic liquid (IL)/Li NTf 2 electrolyte. Multinuclear Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) NMR, spin-lattice (T1) relaxation times and conductivity measurements over a wide temperature range are discussed in terms of transport properties and structuring of the liquid. The conductivity of both additive samples is enhanced the most at low temperatures, with THF slightly more effective than toluene. Both the anion and lithium self-diffusivity are enhanced in the same order by the additives (THF > toluene) while that of the pyrrolidinium cation is marginally enhanced. 1H spin-lattice relaxation times indicate a reasonable degree of structuring and anisotropic motion within all of the samples and both 19F and 7Li highlight the effectiveness of THF at influencing the lithium coordination within these systems.
