V2O5·nH2O nanosheets are fabricated hydrothermally with the acidified peroxovanadate solution at 200 °C for 12 h. The X-ray diffraction suggests that V2O5·nH2O nanosheets display lamellar ordering along c-axis direction. Transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction indicate that V2O5·nH2O nanosheets are very thin in thickness and micron-sized in lateral dimension, and they are two-dimensional crystallites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis are utilized to confirm the elemental composition of nanosheets. The formation process of nanosheets is also discussed in terms of time- and temperature-controlled experiments.

In this paper, a new amino acid derivative, namely Adenine-L-Alanine ramification (ALAR) was synthesized and investigated as a green corrosion inhibitor for X80 pipeline steel in 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid solution using the weight loss, AC impedance, and polarization curve method. The structure of the derivative was characterized by IR and UV–vis spectrum. The weight loss and AC impedance found that the inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in concentration of the inhibitor but decreased with rise in temperature, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attains 91.26% in 8 × 10−2 g/L concentration at 30 °C. The polarization studies showed that the studied amino acid derivative can be used as a corrosion inhibitor. The surface of inhibited and uninhibited specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and the adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The quantum chemical descriptors such as the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital, energy of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were calculated and the inhibition mechanism can be analyzed by the distribution of electrons. Analysis indicated that the inhibitor molecular and empty d orbital of metal forms the coordination bond, covers on the surface of metal, and prevents corrosion reaction.

In this paper, a new variant of Bagging named DepenBag is proposed. This algorithm obtains bootstrap samples at first. Then, it employs a causal discoverer to induce from each sample a dependency model expressed as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The attributes without connections to the class attribute in all the DAGs are then removed. Finally, a component learner is trained from each of the resulted samples to constitute the ensemble. Empirical study shows that DepenBag is effective in building ensembles of nearest neighbor classifiers.

Application of Li-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes at elevated temperatures (above 60°C) is limited due to the decomposition of the electrolyte. Stable solid state electrolytes can solve this problem, but the conductivity of these electrolytes are relatively low, the interfacial contacts with the electrodes are poor, and the charge transfer kinetics in the electrodes are limited. Solutions for these problems by using composite electrodes and electrolytes have been investigated and the results are described. A new concept for making all-solid-state Li-ion batteries that can be applied in the temperature range between room temperature and about 150°C will be presented.

A combination of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies has demonstrated that attempted substitutions of Al, V and Nb into the framework of LiTi2(PO4)3 yield several impurity phases in addition to direct substitutions of Al into Ti and V, Nb into P sites. Direct substitutions were confirmed by changes in the unit cell dimensions as indicated by the peak shifts observed in the X-ray diffractographs and by analyses of the 27Al and 31P magic angle spinning (MAS) spectra. A major impurity phase was identified as AlPO4 (found in at least two polymorphs) and the amount present increases with increasing Al additions. The formation of AlPO4 appeared to be enhanced by further V but suppressed by Nb substitution. These results suggest that the presence of AlPO4 , together with the non-stoichiometric modified LTP, may be the cause for the observed densification of this material upon sintering and the increased ionic conductivity.

Matrine, one of the main components extracted from a traditional Chinese herb, Sophora flavescens Ait, has displayed anti-cancer activity in several types of cancer cells. This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of matrine on primary and metastatic breast cancer. Matrine inhibited the viability of and induced apoptosis in human MCF-7 and mouse 4T1 breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner in vitro as shown by MTT assay, flow cytometry and laser scanning confocal microscopy. Administration of matrine inhibited the growth of primary tumors and their metastases to lungs and livers, in a dose-dependent manner, in a highly metastatic model of 4T1 breast cancer established in syngeneic Balb/c mice. Tumors from matrine-treated mice had a smaller proliferation index, shown by immunostaining with an anti-Ki-67 antibody, a greater apoptosis index, shown by TUNEL-staining, and a less microvessel density, shown by immunostaining with an anti-CD31 A antibody, compared to the controls. Western blot analysis of tumoral homogenates indicated that matrine therapy reduced the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax, downregulated the expressions of VEGF and VEGFR-2, and increased the activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9. This study suggests matrine may be a potent agent, from a natural resource, for treating metastatic breast cancer because of its anti-apoptotic, anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic activities.

α-Al2O3 nanotubes were synthesized in bulk quantity by using simple physical evaporation of pure aluminum powders at 1000 °C. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations show that the nanotubes have diameters smaller than 100 nm and lengths up to several microns. Cathodoluminescence measurements revealed a strong luminescence band in the wavelength range of 280–380 nm centered at 330 nm, which could be attributed to the oxygen vacancies in the α-Al2O3 nanotubes. Sacrificial template model is regarded as the possible formation mechanism of the nanotubes.

A MoO3-carbon nanocomposite was synthesized from a mixture of MoO3 and graphite by a controlled ball milling procedure. The as-prepared product consists of nanosized MoO3 particles (2-180 nm) homogeneously distributed in carbon matrix. The nanocomposite acts as a high capacity anode material for lithium-ion batteries and exhibits good cyclic behavior. Its initial capacity exceeds the theoretical capacity of 745 mA h g-1 in a mixture of MoO3 and graphite (1:1 by weight), and the stable capacity of 700 mA h g-1 (94% of the theoretical capacity) is still retained after 120 cycles. The electrode performance is linked with the unique nanoarchitecture of the composite and is compared with the performance of MoO3-based anode materials reported in the literature previously (nanoparticles, ball milled powders, and carbon-coated nanobelts). The high value of capacity and good cyclic stability of MoO3-carbon nanocomposite are attractive in respect to those of the reported MoO3 electrodes.

A low current density preconditioning process, which produces an improved lithium transport mechanism is created by the action of charge flow through a plastic crystal electrolyte (figure). A reduction in cell polarisation at high applied current density is demonstrated which approaches the rates required for these electrolytes to be used in practical devices.

Substrate-induced coagulation (SIC) is a coating process based on self-assembly for coating different surfaces with fine particulate materials. The particles are dispersed in a suitable solvent and the stability of the dispersion is adjusted by additives. When a surface, pre-treated with a flocculant e.g. a polyelectrolyte, is dipped into the dispersion, it induces coagulation resulting in the deposition of the particles on the surface. A non-aqueous SIC process for carbon coating is presented, which can be performed in polar, aprotic solvents such as N-Methyl-2- pyrrolidinone (NMP). Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) is used to condition the surface of substrates such as mica, copperfoil, silicon-wafers and lithiumcobalt oxide powder, a cathode material used for Li-ion batteries. The subsequent SIC carbon coating produces uniform layers on the substrates and causes the conductivity of lithiumcobalt oxide to increase drastically, while retaining a high percentage of active battery material.

Video event detection is an effective way to automatically understand the semantic content of the video. However, due to the mismatch between low-level visual features and high-level semantics, the research of video event detection encounters a number of challenges, such as how to extract the suitable information from video, how to represent the event, how to build up reasoning mechanism to infer the event according to video information. In this paper, we propose a novel event detection method. The method detects the video event based on the semantic trajectory, which is a high-level semantic description of the moving object’s trajectory in the video. The proposed method consists of three phases to transform low-level visual features to middle-level raw trajectory information and then to high-level semantic trajectory information. Event reasoning is then carried out with the assistance of semantic trajectory information and background knowledge. Additionally, to release the users’ burden in manual event definition, a method is further proposed to automatically discover the event-related semantic trajectory pattern from the sample semantic trajectories. Furthermore, in order to effectively use the discovered semantic trajectory patterns, the associative classification-based event detection framework is adopted to discover the possibly occurred event. Empirical studies show our methods can effectively and efficiently detect video events.

BACKGROUND : Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) displays vasodilative, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective activities. Impaired production of H(2)S contributes to the increased intrahepatic resistance in cirrhotic livers. The study aimed to investigate the roles of H(2)S in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced hepatotoxicity, cirrhosis and portal hypertension.

METHODS AND FINDINGS : Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a donor of H(2)S, and DL-propargylglycine (PAG), an irreversible inhibitor of cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), were applied to the rats to investigate the effects of H(2)S on CCl(4)-induced acute hepatotoxicity, cirrhosis and portal hypertension by measuring serum levels of H(2)S, hepatic H(2)S producing activity and CSE expression, liver function, activity of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2E1, oxidative and inflammatory parameters, liver fibrosis and portal pressure. CCl(4) significantly reduced serum levels of H(2)S, hepatic H(2)S production and CSE expression. NaHS attenuated CCl(4)-induced acute hepatotoxicity by supplementing exogenous H(2)S, which displayed anti-oxidative activities and inhibited the CYP2E1 activity. NaHS protected liver function, attenuated liver fibrosis, inhibited inflammation, and reduced the portal pressure, evidenced by the alterations of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), hyaluronic acid (HA), albumin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, liver histology, hepatic hydroxyproline content and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA) expression. PAG showed opposing effects to NaHS on most of the above parameters.

CONCLUSIONS :  Exogenous H2S attenuates CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity, liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension by its multiple functions including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, cytoprotection and anti-fibrosis, indicating that targeting H2S may present a promising approach, particularly for its prophylactic effects, against liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension.
