Ag particles were generated on Ag+-doped polyimide film by laser direct writing, followed by selective copper deposition using the metallic silver particles as seeds. Laser irradiation caused in situ reduction and agglomeration of silver on the polyimide film. The copper lines were less uniform and compact with higher scanning velocity and the width of the deposited copper line could reach 25 mu m. Equations of the relationship between scanning velocity and connectivity of the deposited copper patterns have been derived. The process was characterised by AFM, XPS, SEM, and semiconductor characterisation system.

A direct comparison of the laser-induced photoluminescence of manganese(II) with the chemiluminescence from the reaction between acidic potassium permanganate and sodium borohydride was used to confirm that the characteristic red emission from this widely used chemiluminescence reagent emanates from an electronically excited manganese(II) species.

The current study focuses on giving a basic understanding of tubular graphene sheets or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and points towards their role in fabricating elastomer composites. Since the properties and the performance of CNT reinforced elastomer composites predominantly depend on the rate of dispersion of fillers in the matrix, the physical and chemical interaction of polymer chains with the nanotubes, crosslinking chemistry of rubbers and the orientation of the tubes within the matrix, here, a thorough study of these topics is carried out. For this, various techniques of composite manufacturing such as pulverization, heterocoagulation, freeze drying, etc. are discussed by emphasizing the dispersion and alignment of CNTs in elastomers. The importance of the functionalization technique as well as the confinement effect of nanotubes in elastomer media is derived. In a word, this article is aimed exclusively at addressing the prevailing problems related to the CNT dispersion in various rubber matrices, the solutions to produce advanced high-performance elastomeric composites and various fields of applications of such composites, especially electronics. Special attention has also been given to the non-linear viscoelasticity effects of elastomers such as the Payne effect, Mullin's effect and hysteresis in regulating the composite properties. Moreover, the current challenges and opportunities for efficiently translating the extraordinary electrical properties of CNTs to rubbery matrices are also dealt with.

We report on the preparation of wavelike surface patterns with characteristic wavelengths on thin bilayers of poly(methyl methacrylate) on azobenzene liquid crystalline polymer films (LCP/PMMA) by irradiation of a single polarized pulsed laser beam. The formation of such patterns was influenced by the thickness of the upper layer and the laser fluence. We were also able to guide the wavelike pattern to have a specific orientation by placing an elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold on the surface of bilayer film prior to laser irradiation. Moreover, the property of the laser irradiation, that is, the selectivity through mask-projection systems, allowed us fabricating complicated micropattems for novel microdevices. Gold nanorods functionalised with transferrin were used for photothermally induced necrosis and apoptosis of cancer cells. It was observed that the laser energy required to induce cell apoptosis is significantly lower than that for cell necrosis, indicating that photothermally induced apoptosis can be used for medically safe laser cancer treatment.

Microphase separation through competitive hydrogen bonding interactions in ABC/D triblock copolymer/ homopolymer complexes is studied for the first time. This study investigated self-assembled nanostructures that are obtained in the bulk, by the complexation of a semicrystalline polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (SVPEO) triblock copolymer with a poly(4-vinyl phenol) (PVPh) homopolymer in tetrahydrofuran (THF). In these complexes, microphase separation takes place due to the disparity in intermolecular interactions among PVPh/P4VP and PVPh/PEO pairs. At low PVPh concentrations, PEO interacts relatively weakly with PVPh, whereas in the complexes containing more than 30 wt% PVPh, the PEO block interacts considerably with PVPh, leading to the formation of composition-dependent nanostructures. SAXS and TEM results indicate that the cylindrical morphology of a neat SVPEO triblock copolymer changes into lamellae structures at 20 wt% of PVPh then to disordered lamellae with 40 wt% PVPh. Wormlike structures are obtained in the complex with 50 wt%PVPh, followed by disordered spherical microdomains with size in the order of 40–50 nm in the complexes with 60–80 wt% PVPh. Moreover, when the content of PVPh increases to 80 wt%, the complexes show a completely homogenous phase of PVPh/P4VP and PVPh/PEO with phase separated spherical PS domains. The fractional crystallization behavior in SVPEO and complexes at lower PVPh content was also examined. A structural model was proposed to explain the microphase separation and self-assembled morphologies of these complexes based on the experimental results obtained. The formation of nanostructures and changes in morphologies depend on the relative strength of hydrogen bonding interactions between each component block of the copolymer and the homopolymer.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing. The dispersion of clay platelets and rheology of nanocomposites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and rheometric mechanical spectrometer (RMS). The transformation of α to β and γ phase in PVDF was induced by the addition of nanoclay and subsequently the isothermal crystallization kinetics of neat PVDF and its nanocomposite have been investigated. The interaction between clay nanofillers and PVDF macromolecular chains induced the change of conformation from trans-gauche to all-trans crystal structure in PVDF segment. The isothermal crystallization of PVDF/clay nanocomposites was carried out by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) technique. The influence of clay platelets on nucleation crystallization rate and Avrami exponent were studied. PVDF/clay nanocomposite showed higher crystallization rate indicating that nanoclay has acted as an effective nucleation agent. This nucleation effect of nanoclay increased the Avrami exponent and decreased the degree of crystallinity. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Purpose: To assess ocular blood flow responses to acute IOP stress following 4 weeks of chronic IOP elevation in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic and control rats. We hypothesise that chronic IOP elevation for 4 weeks will further impair blood flow regulation in STZ-induced diabetic rats eyes. Methods: Two weeks following citrate buffer or STZ-injections chronic IOP elevation was induced in Long Evans rats via fortnightly intracameral injections of microspheres (15 μm) suspended in 5% polyethylene glycol. IOP was monitored daily. Electroretinography (ERG, -6.79-2.07 log cd s m-2) was undertaken at Week 4 to compare photoreceptor (RmPIII), ON-bipolar cell (Vmax) and ganglion cell dominant ERG [scotopic threshold response (STR)] components. 4 weeks post-chronic IOP induction, ocular blood flow (laser Doppler flowmetry) was measured in response to acute IOP challenge (10-100 mmHg, in 5 mmHg steps, each 3 min). Results: Four weeks of chronic IOP (mean ± S.E.M., citrate: 24.0 ± 0.3 to 30.7 ± 1.3 and STZ-diabetes: 24.2 ± 0.2 to 31.1 ± 1.2 mmHg) was associated with reduced photoreceptor amplitude in both groups (-25.3 ± 2.2% and -17.2 ± 3.0%, respectively). STZ-diabetic eyes showed reduced photoreceptor sensitivity (citrate: 0.5 ± 1.8%, STZ-diabetic: -8.1 ± 2.4%). Paradoxically ON-bipolar cell sensitivity was increased, particularly in citrate control eyes (citrate: 166.8 ± 25.9%, STZ-diabetic: 64.8 ± 18.7%). The ganglion cell dominant STR was not significantly reduced in STZ-diabetic rats. Using acute IOP elevation to probe autoregulation, we show that STZ-diabetes impaired autoregulation compared with citrate control animals. The combination of STZ-diabetes and chronic IOP elevation further impaired autoregulation. Conclusions: STZ-diabetes and chronic IOP elevation appear to be additive risk factors for impairment of ocular blood flow autoregulation.

In this article, we discuss the phase morphology, thermal, mechanical, and crystallization properties of uncompatibilized and compatibilized polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blends. It is observed that the Young's modulus increases, but other mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, elongation at break, and impact strength decrease by blending PS to PP. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of PP/PS blends were compared with various theoretical models. The thermal stability, melting, and crystallization temperatures and percentage crystallinity of semicrystalline PP in the blends were marginally decreased by the addition of amorphous PS. The presence of maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (compatibilizer) increases the phase stability of 90/10 and 80/20 blends by preventing the coalescence. Hence, finer and more uniform droplets of PS dispersed phases are observed. The compatibilizer induced some improvement in impact strength for the blends with PP matrix phase, however fluctuations in modulus, strength and ductility were observed with respect to the uncompatibilized blend. The thermal stability was not much affected by the addition of the compatibilizer for the PP rich blends but shows some decrease in the thermal stability of the blends, where PS forms the matrix. On the other hand, the % crystallinity was increased by the addition of compatibilizer, irrespective of the blend concentration.
