The effect of varying the position of the azobenzene group within two comparable photoresponsive amphiphiles on their capability to form lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) was investigated in detail in this study. Two photoresponsive amphiphiles having comparable structures were designed and synthesized consisting of hydrophilic oligooxyethylene units, a hydrophobic alkyl chain and a light-sensitive azobenzene moiety. When the azobenzene group was located in the middle of the hydrophobic alkyl chain, multiple LLC phases were observed at various water contents in the azo-surfactant–water binary system. In contrast, when the azobenzene group was directly attached to the hydrophilic domain, the azo-surfactant–water binary system exhibited only lamellar phases. The temperature dependence of these self-organised nanostructures was also investigated by the combination of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and rheology. Under alternating UV and visible light irradiation, reversible trans–cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene group occurred efficiently in dilute solution for both azo-surfactants. However, only photoisomerization of the surfactant possessing the azobenzene group localized in the middle of the alkyl chain induced significant changes in the self-assembled structure and its bulk properties. This study demonstrates that self-assembly and photoresponsive behaviour of photosensitive amphiphiles is extremely sensitive to the position of the photoactive moiety within the surfactant molecular architecture.

The objective of this research was to determine whether joint angles at critical gait events and during major energy generation/absorption phases of the gait cycle would reliably discriminate age-related degeneration during unobstructed walking. The gaits of 24 healthy adults (12 young and 12 elderly) were analysed using the PEAK Motus motion analysis system. The elderly participants showed significantly greater single (60.3% versus 62.3%, p < 0.01) and double ( p < 0.05) support times, reduced knee flexion (47.7° versus 43.0°, p < 0.05) and ankle plantarflexion (16.8° compared to 3.3°, p = 0.053) at toe off, reduced knee flexion during push-off and reduced ankle dorsiflexion (16.8° compared to 22.0°, p < 0.05) during the swing phase. The plantarflexing ankle joint motion during the stance to swing phase transition (A2) for the young group (31.3°) was about twice ( p < 0.05) that of the elderly (16.9°). Reduced knee extension range of motion suggests that the elderly favoured a flexed-knee gait to assist in weight acceptance. Reduced dorsiflexion by the elderly in the swing phase implies greater risk of toe contact with obstacles. Overall, the results suggest that joint angle measures at critical events/phases in the gait cycle provide a useful indication of age-related degeneration in the control of lower limb trajectories during unobstructed walking.

Fish oil (FO)- and canola oil (CO)-based diets were regularly alternated in a daily cycle (amCO: alternation of CO in the morning and FO in the afternoon, and pmCO: alternation of FO in the morning and CO in the afternoon) or in a series of weekly cycles (2W: alternation of 2 weeks on CO and 2 weeks on FO, 4W: alternation of 4 weeks on CO and 4 weeks on FO), over a 16-week period in juvenile Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii). No significant differences were observed between any of the treatments in relation to the final weight. However, fish subjected to the 2W schedule were larger (P>0.05) than all other treatments (37.2 ± 0.30 vs. 34.3 ± 0.58 in the control treatment). Fish receiving the 2W treatment had a significantly lower total net disappearance of eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5n-3 (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid 22:6n-3 (62.1% and 24.0% respectively) compared with the control treatment (fish continuously fed a blend of 50% FO and 50% CO). Likewise, Murray cod receiving the amCO daily schedule had a significantly lower total net disappearance of EPA in comparison with the CD and pmCO treatments. These data point towards the existence of cyclical mechanisms relative to fatty acid utilization/retention.

Cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) membranes were prepared by polymerization in periodic nanostructured lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) hexagonal phases under UV light. A series of membranes were prepared under different purification treatment conditions. Polarized light microscope was employed to determine the LLC phase texture of LLC system before and after polymerization. It is found that the LLC hexagonal structure retained to some degree after polymerization. The interior structures of final membranes were investigated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results suggested that purification process affect the structure retention.

Reactions of CeCl3·7H2O and Ce(NO3)3·6H2O with Naacac or NH4acac in aqueous solution at 21 and 45 °C yielded the trihydrate [Ce(acac)3(H2O)2]·H2O and the dihydrate [Ce(acac)3(H2O)2], respectively, whereas similar treatment of (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] gave the trihydrate at both temperatures. Desiccation of the hydrates over silica gel left the dihydrate unchanged, whereas the trihydrate underwent decomposition rather than dehydration. Aerial oxidation of [Ce(acac)3(H2O)2] in CH2Cl2 and toluene yielded α-[Ce(acac)4] and β-[Ce(acac)4], respectively, the structure of the former being re-determined with improved precision. Careful treatment of aqueous (NH4)4[Ce(SO4)4] and Hacac (initially pH 1–2) with aqueous ammonia to pH 5 precipitated hydrated [Ce(acac)4], from which [Ce(acac)4]·10H2O was isolated as unstable, light-sensitive single crystals, and the structure was determined. The complex is a laminar clathrate containing layers of Ce(acac)4 molecules sandwiched between extensive hydrogen-bonded layers of water molecules which do not interact with the metal. Electrochemical experiments confirmed the unstable nature of hydrated CeIII(acac)3, while the reduction of [Ce(acac)4] yielded well-defined cyclic voltammograms in acetonitrile and acetone, corresponding to a quasi-reversible process. For the [CeIV(acac)4]/[CeIII(acac)4]redox couple, a calculated reversible potential of 0.22±0.02 V versus SHE was obtained in acetone or acetonitrile (0.1 M Bu4NPF6) at both gold and glassy carbon electrodes. This potential is consistent with the ease of both oxidation and reduction of cerium acetylacetonate complexes as found in the synthetic studies.

A new series of salts, based on the N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium cation and the PF6- anion, are reported and their thermal properties described for alkyl = Me, Et, Pr, Bu, Hx, and Hp. X-ray structures of several of the salts are also reported. The N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium hexafluorophosphate has a melting point greater than 390 °C; however, the N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium derivative melts at 70 °C. Most of the PF6- salts were observed to have lower melting points in comparison with the analogous iodide salts. Most of the salts exhibit one or more thermal transitions prior to melting and a final entropy of melting less than 20 J K-1 mol-1, behavior which has previously been associated with the formation of plastic crystal phases. Good crystal structure solutions were obtained at low temperatures in the case of the alkyl = propyl and heptyl derivatives. The loss of diffraction peaks and changes in symmetry at higher temperatures indicated the presence of dynamic rotational disorder, supporting the understanding that the plastic properties arise from rotational motions in the crystal.

Ambient temperature conductive plastic crystal phases of alkylmethylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonyl amide (TFSA) salts are studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to examine the role of vacancy size and concentration in conductivity. The ethyl methylpyrrolidinium TFSA salt (P12 TFSA) has larger vacancies and a greater concentration of vacancies than the dimethylpyrrolidinium TFSA salt (P11 TFSA) over the temperature range investigated. The relative vacancy size and concentration vary with temperature and reflect the solid–solid transitions as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). P12 TFSA has greater conductivity than P11 TFSA and has furthermore been observed to exhibit slip planes at room temperature. P12 TFSA has greater entropy changes associated with solid–solid phase transitions below the melting point than P11 TFSA possibly indicating greater rotational freedom in P12 TFSA. These results support the notion that the diffusion, conduction, and plastic flow properties of the pyrrolidinium TFSA salts are derived from the lattice vacancies.

A new family of molten salts is reported, based on the N-alkyl, N-alkyl pyrrolidinium cation and the bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide anion. Some of the members of the family are molten at room temperature, while the smaller and more symmetrical members have melting points around 100 °C. Of the room-temperature molten salt examples, the methyl butyl derivative exhibits the highest conductivity; at 2 × 10-3 S/cm this is the highest molten salt conductivity observed to date at room temperature among the ammonium salts. This highly conductive behavior is rationalized in terms of the role of cation planarity. The salts also exhibit multiple crystalline phase behavior below their melting points and exhibit significant conductivity in at least their higher temperature crystal phase. For example, the methyl propyl derivative (mp = 12 °C) shows ion conductivity of 1 × 10-6 S/cm at 0 °C in its higher temperature crystalline phase.

N,N,N,N-Tetramethylammonium dicyanamide (Me4NDCA) has been examined via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, conductivity, single crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses, and was found to be highly conductive in the solid state (σ =10−3 S cm−2 at 420 K) and to also exhibit unusual plastic crystal behaviour. To investigate the correlation between such behaviour and the occurrence of molecular rotations in the crystal, 1H NMR second moment measurements are compared with calculated values predicted from the crystal structure. While DSC analysis indicates a number of solid–solid transitions at ambient temperatures, subsequent 1H NMR analysis of the Me4N+ cation shows that a variety of rotational motions become active at low (<240 K) temperatures, and that such transitions in rotational states occur over a range of temperatures rather than in a sharp transition. Conductivity analysis reveals that between 320 K and 420 K the conductivity increases by more than six orders of magnitude in the solid state, in line with the transition of the Me4N+ cation to a diffusive state, and that other phase transitions observed in this temperature range have no marked effect on the conductivity. Conduction in this solid state is therefore envisaged to involve a vacancy-diffusion model, involving Me4N+ cation vacancies.

Characterization of a new family of salts, based on a number of 1-alkyl-2-methyl pyrrolinium cations and the bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) amide anion (TFSA), is presented. From the thermal analysis, conductivity and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, at least one of the compounds of the family, 1-ethyl-2-methyl pyrrolinium TFSA, was found to exhibit plastic crystal phases before melting and to exhibit high conductivity in the solid state (1×10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C). This plastic crystal behaviour is discussed in comparison with other members of this pyrrolinium salt family.

Differences between alkyl, dipole–dipole, hydrogen bonding, and π-π selective surfaces represented by non-resonance and resonance π-stationary phases have been assessed for the separation of ‘Ristretto’ café espresso by employing 2DHPLC techniques with C18 phase selectivity detection. Geometric approach to factor analysis (GAFA) was used to measure the detected peaks (N), spreading angle (β), correlation, practical peak capacity (np) and percentage usage of the separations space, as an assessment of selectivity differences between regional quadrants of the two-dimensional separation plane. Although all tested systems were correlated to some degree to the C18 dimension, regional measurement of separation divergence revealed that performance of specific systems was better for certain sample components. The results illustrate that because of the complexity of the ‘real’ sample obtaining a truly orthogonal two-dimensional system for complex samples of natural origin may be practically impossible.

The daily metabolizable energy intake of an animal is potentially limited by either the available feeding time or by its capacity to process energy. Animals are generally considered not to be time-limited but rather to be energy-processing-limited. This is concluded from the common observation that an animal's feeding time per day increases with a decrease in food density. We argue that such changes in feeding time are in theory also expected when no constraints are operating. Thus, a study of the constraints on energy intakes of free-living animals should be performed during demanding phases of the year. As an example, we collected data on time and energy budgets of Bewick's swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) refuelling during migration on fennel pondweed (Potamogeton pectinatus) tubers in two years differing two-fold in tuber biomass density. As predicted by time limitation, the feeding time (defined as the time with the head submerged) did not change in response to a change in food biomass density, both within and between years (averaging 12.2 h d−1). Contrary to energy-processing limitation, and again in line with time limitation, the daily metabolizable energy intake varied, being greater in the year with high than in the year with low food densities. We conclude that more studies are needed of animals operating under demanding conditions before it can be assessed whether free-living animals are generally energy-processing- or time-limited.
