An aspect of mathematical understanding: the notion of 'connected knowing'

Much advice about teaching for understanding implies that teacher should help children to develop connections between aspects of their experience, knowledge, and skills. This paper outlines points from the literature about different types of connections and describes relevant points from four case study teachers said and did.

Self-assembly of gold nanowires along carbon nanotubes for ultrahigh-aspect-ratio hybrids

We report a novel approach for the assembly of one-dimensional hybrid nanostructures that consist of gold nanowires with ultrahigh aspect ratios (L/d > 500) self-assembled along the axes of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The micrometer-long hybrid nanowires exhibit high electrical conductivity and can be easily microcontact-printed onto various substrates in a patterned form, suggesting that these hybrids have considerable potential as interconnects for nanoelectronic applications.

Vested interests in addiction research and policy alcohol industry use of social aspect public relations organizations against preventative health measures

Aim It has been proposed that alcohol industry ‘social aspects/public relations’ organizations (SAPROs) serve the agenda of lending credibility to industry claims of corporate responsibility while promoting ineffective industry-friendly interventions (such as school-based education or TV advertising campaigns) and creating doubt about interventions which have a strong evidence base (such as higher taxes on alcoholic beverages). This paper investigated whether submissions to Australia's National Preventative Health Taskforce (NPHT) from alcohol industry bodies regarding the Australian SAPRO, Drinkwise, have used this organization to demonstrate corporate responsibility while promoting industry-friendly interventions.

Method Submissions to the Australian National Preventative Health Taskforce (NPHT) discussion paper Australia, the healthiest country by 2020 (n = 375) were examined to identify those with primary alcohol content. A thematic analysis of the resulting 33 submissions was conducted to determine which organization, institution or individual discussed Drinkwise.

Setting Australia.

Findings Nine of the 33 submissions discussed Drinkwise; all were submitted by the alcohol industry or its affiliates. Every industry submission referred to Drinkwise either as providing evidence of social responsibility or by suggesting the industry-friendly actions of Drinkwise as alternatives to those recommended by the NPHT report.

Conclusions Drinkwise has been used by the alcohol industry to create an impression of social responsibility while promoting interventions that maintain profits and campaigning against effective interventions such as higher taxes on alcohol.

Security from the transparent computing aspect

Transparent computing is an emerging computing paradigm where the users can enjoy any kind of service over networks on-demand with any devices, without caring about the underlying deployment details. In transparent computing, all software resources (even the OS) are stored on remote servers, from which the clients can request the resources for local execution in a block-streaming way. This paradigm has many benefits including cross-platform experience, user orientation, and platform independence. However, due to its fundamental features, e.g., separation of computation and storage in clients and servers respectively, and block-streaming-based scheduling and execution, transparent computing faces many new security challenges that may become its biggest obstacle. In this paper, we propose a Transparent Computing Security Architecture (TCSA), which builds user-controlled security for transparent computing by allowing the users to configure the desired security environments on demand. We envision, TCSA, which allows the users to take the initiative to protect their own data, is a promising solution for data security in transparent computing. © 2014 IEEE.
