This chapter argues that globalisation, culture and e-business exist in interesting ways that challenge accepted norms of interpretation about business practice in the new century. There appears to be a paradox of parallel business practice of defacto standards versus a culture of micro management. Discourse has been constructed that accepts the parallel existence and the co-existence of two layers operating within the business world. The international layer of standards, albeit defacto, co-existing with a layer of cultural difference supported by Guanxi and cultural values and cultural practice. This chapter argues that the one doesn't challenge the other. Rather, the one compliments the other. They co-exist and create economies of scale, deliver efficiency, deliver cost effectiveness, deliver productivity savings, solve currency trade problems, solve logistics problems, solve tracking problems, and deal with the imperfections in the marketplace. The two levels, it is argued, encourage collaboration and foster necessary cooperation along the supply chain. The end result is a world of e-business that benefits international business.

A microstructural characterisation of the family of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salts was carried out by observation of powder surface morphologies with the aim of extending the microstructure-property correlation. Inherent difficulties limiting extensive studies of organic solids by SEM, including volatility under vacuum, charging due to electron beam irradiation, and air-sensitivity were overcome with the use of a Field Emission SEM and cryostage attachment. This technique, providing considerable improvements in image quality at low accelerating voltages, enabled direct observation of complex microstructural features in samples exhibiting high temperature plastic crystalline phases (N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P11BF4]; N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P12BF4]; N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P13BF4]). Extensive lattice imperfections including grain boundaries, slip planes and dislocation pits were observed within particles of approximately 200 mgrm diameter. The N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (P14BF4) sample in this series revealed columnar single crystals with high aspect ratios. The origin of plastic flow properties is discussed using single crystal and polycrystalline slip observations and a relationship proposed between defect characteristics and transport properties.

The structure and transport of N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (P13BF4) has been investigated over a wide temperature range in consequence to exhibiting properties suitable for potential solid-state superionic electrolyte applications. Prior to melting, the organic salt, P13BF4, transforms into a plastic crystal phase. Intrinsic conductivity in this solid, phase I (45–65 °C), is comparable to that in the melt (~10−3 S cm−1). Ionic motion and transport properties were investigated by 1H and 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Pressure-induced plastic flow in this system may accommodate volume changes in device application and to this extent, X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been used. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed complex surface morphology and lattice imperfections associated with the strong orientational disorder of the plastic state.

This paper suggests that if parental nurturing is a dominating force in human capital formation then income redistribution may not promote economic growth. In particular, if, consistently with empirical evidence, parental human capital complements investment in a child’s education and yields increasing returns in the intergenerational production of human capital, income redistribution may have an adverse impact on the growth rate of average human capital. Redistribution shifts resources towards the less educationally-productive families and thus in the presence of credit markets imperfections and increasing returns, it reduces the aggregate level of investment in human capital. Moreover, if the degree of increasing returns is sufficiently large to produce sustained growth, this adverse effect on human capital formation may outweigh the conventional beneficial effects of redistribution that arises from the interaction between a production technology exhibiting diminishing returns and credit market imperfections.

How does the beauty industry ‘narrate the skin’? What does it teach women from different cultural groups about the female body? How does skin function as a site where female subjection and abjection are produced and reproduced? In this paper we examine the skin industry pointing to its extreme commodification of the female body and to the inexcusable pressure this places on females of most age and cultural groups.We focus on two examples. Firstly, we show what the skin industry teaches girls and women about both their skin colour ‘problems’ and desirable practices of whitening and, secondarily, tanning. Secondly, we consider what the cosmetic surgery industry teaches us about female bodily ‘imperfections’ linked to certain ethnic and racial groups and the necessary ‘remedies’. Overall we show how the socio-cultural normalization of perfect skin is a product of a range of contemporary and enduring social and cultural forces overlain by complex pedagogies of power, expertise and affect.

 In some advanced sheet metal forming processes such as the incremental forming process, a local fracture strain after necking is very important. In order to accurately predict necking and fracture phenomena, a crystal plasticity model is introduced in the finite element analysis of tensile tests. A tensile specimen is modeled by many grains that have their own crystalline orientation. And each of the grains is discretized by many elements. Using this analysis, necking behavior of a tensile specimen can be predicted without any initial imperfections. A damage model is also implemented to predict sudden drops of load carrying capacity after necking and to reflect the void nucleation and growth of the severely deformed region. From an analysis of the tensile test, the necking behavior is well predicted. Finally, analyses are carried out for various strain paths, and FLDs up to necking and fracture are predicted.
