The crystallographic rotation field for deformation in torsion is such that it is possible for orientations close to stable orientations to rotate away from the stable orientation. A Taylor type model was used to demonstrate that this phenomenon has the potential to transform randomly generated low-angle boundaries into high-angle boundaries. After imposing an equivalent strain of 1.2, up to 40% of the simulated boundaries displayed a disorientation in excess of 15°. These high-angle boundaries were characterised by a disorientation axis close to parallel with the sample radial direction. A series of hot torsion tests was carried out on 1050 aluminium to seek evidence for boundaries formed by this mechanism. A number of deformation-induced high-angle boundaries were identified. Many of these boundaries showed disorientation axes and rotation senses similar to those seen in the simulations. Between 10% and 25% of all the high-angle boundary present in samples twisted to equivalent strains between 2 and 7 could be attributed to the present mechanism.

A series of new electrolyte materials based on a molecular plastic crystal doped by different iodide salts together with iodine have been prepared and characterized by thermal analysis, ionic conductivity, electrochemical and solid-state NMR diffusion measurements. In these materials, the plastic crystal phase of succinonitrile acts as a good matrix for the quaternary ammonium based iodides and iodine and appears to act in some cases as a solid-state “solvent” for the binary dopants. The materials were prepared by mixing the components in the molten state with subsequent cooling into the plastic crystalline state. This resulted in waxy-solid electrolytes in the temperature range from − 40 to 60 °C. The combination of structural variation of the cations, and fast redox couple diffusion (comparable with liquid-based electrolytes), as well as a high ionic conductivity of up to 3 × 10− 3 S cm− 1 at ambient temperature, make these materials very attractive for potential use in solid-state photoelectrochemical cells.

The High Court in Electricity Generation Corp v Woodside Energy Ltd [2014] HCA 7 considered the contractual obligation to use reasonable endeavours. The court decided by a majority of four to one that various sellers of natural gas had complied with their obligation to use reasonable endeavours to supply gas to an electricity generator, despite not actually supplying the gas when the sellers had capacity to do so. The majority judgment provides some useful observations about the use of reasonable endeavours obligations and underscores the court's objective approach to construing commercial contracts.

A previous study conducted in guinea pigs suggested that ingestion of diets high in EPA and DHA may result in suboptimal retinal function. The aim of the present study was to evaluate retinal function in pigmented (Long-Evans) rats, raised to a third generation on diets that were either deficient in n-3 PUFA or adequate (with the addition of DHA). Electroretinographic assessment employed full-field white flash stimulation. Photoreceptor responses were evaluated in terms of peak amplitudes and implicit times (a-wave, b-wave), intensity-response functions (Naka-Rushton), and the parameters of a model of transduction (P3). Retinal phospholipid FA composition was measured by capillary GLC. DHA levels were reduced by 55% in n-3-deficient animals compared with the n-3-adequate group, whereas the levels of docosapentaenoic acid n-6 were 44 times higher in n-3-deficient animals. The level of arachidonic acid was marginally higher (12.8%) in n-6-adequate animals. The n-3-deficient animals exhibited significantly reduced retinal sensitivity (σ and S values were both affected by 0.29 log units) and increased b-wave implicit times compared with those fed the n-3-adequate diet. These data suggest that n-3 PUFA are required for development of retinal sensitivity, more so than other indices of retinal function assessed by current methods, such as maximal response amplitude. However, the benefit for retinal function of adding preformed DHA to diets already replete in n-3 PUFA remains unclear.

Fipronil, a phenyl pyrazole pesticide, is aerially applied in semi-arid and agricultural areas of Australia to control locust outbreaks. Locust populations build to plague proportions when rainfall occurs in late winter and spring, promoting early vegetation growth. These conditions also attract breeding birds. Over 100 species have been observed coincident with locust control operations. Avian exposure to fipronil occurs via direct contact and by ingesting contaminated insects or seeds. Avian toxicity information demonstrates there is high species-specific variability in fipronil sensitivity in the few avian species studied. There is no research, however, explaining this variability, nor is there research regarding physiological or behavioural sub-lethal effects on avian species. This makes it extremely difficult to predict the toxicity of fipronil on unstudied species at high risk of exposure. Our research aims to resolve this lack of essential information in two ways: firstly we examine whether fipronil has identifiable sublethal effects in exposed birds and their offspring that compromise population health, and secondly evaluate avian metabolism of fipronil in selected species to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying variation in species sensitivity. Our results provide critically needed information for evaluating field effects of locust-control spraying in Australia.

Fossil fuel based power generation is and will still be the back bone of our world economy, albeit such form of power generation significantly contributes to global CO2 emissions. Solar energy is a clean, environmental friendly energy source for power generation, however solar photovoltaic electricity generation is not practical for large commercial scales due to its cost and high-tech nature. Solar thermal is another way to use solar energy to generate power. Many attempts to establish solar (solo) thermal power stations have been practiced all over the world. Although there are some advantages in solo solar thermal power systems, the efficiencies and costs of these systems are not so attractive. Alternately by modifying, if possible, the existing coal-fired power stations to generate green sustainable power, a much more efficient means of power generation can be reached. This paper presents the concept of solar aided power generation in conventional coal-fired power stations, i.e., integrating solar (thermal) energy into conventional fossil fuelled power generation cycles (termed as solar aided thermal power). The solar aided power generation (SAPG) concept has technically been derived to use the strong points of the two technologies (traditional regenerative Rankine cycle with relatively higher efficiency and solar heating at relatively low temperature range). The SAPG does not only contribute to increase the efficiencies of the conventional power station and reduce its emission of the greenhouse gases, but also provides a better way to use solar heat to generate the power. This paper presents the advantages of the SAPG at conceptual level.

Recent studies have shown the important roles that new high growth firms can play in job creation and economic development. This paper reviews the positioning of present Australian government policies and programs that intend to be supportive of the development of more high growth businesses; that is those that employ greater than twenty persons. The research explores the environments of a group of new high growth Australian firms and the roles that the various identified government support initiatives have played in their development. The paper also draws on recent research on survival and growth patterns of spin-off companies generated by publicly funded research agencies to map the government support initiatives with the different stages of the high growth business life cycle. The paper reviews issues in the Australian business environment that may have affected the rate of generation of new high growth firms. Of particular relevance has been the progressive freeing up of the Australian labour market and a greater resource allocation to research commercialisation by publicly funded research providers. The analysis has finally separately considered how to produce and support more founders of such high growth firms, their future chief executive officers, the specialist consultants and other professional support people and issues related to access to finance that such firms will need. The research findings draw attention to the important role of government financial support for industry research, particularly at the point where the first product is in the market and resources are scarce. At this point support is vital both to increase the market penetration of the core product and for R&D for product customisation and increasing the product range.

Objective: To compare the energy expenditure of adolescents when playing sedentary and new generation active computer games.

Design: Cross sectional comparison of four computer games. Setting Research laboratories.

Participants: Six boys and five girls aged 13–15 years.

Procedure: Participants were fitted with a monitoring device validated to predict energy expenditure. They played four computer games for 15 minutes each. One of the games was sedentary (XBOX 360) and the other three were active (Wii Sports).

Main outcome measure:
Predicted energy expenditure, compared using repeated measures analysis of variance.

Results:
Mean (standard deviation) predicted energy expenditure when playing Wii Sports bowling (190.6 (22.2) kl/kg/min), tennis (202.5 (31.5) kl/kg/min), and boxing (198.1 (33.9) kl/kg/min) was significantly greater than when playing sedentary games (125.5 (13.7) kl/kg/min) (P<0.001). Predicted energy expenditure was at least 65.1 (95% confidence interval 47.3 to 82.9) kl/kg/min greater when playing active rather than sedentary games.

Conclusions:
Playing new generation active computer games uses significantly more energy than playing sedentary computer games but not as much energy as playing the sport itself. The energy used when playing active Wii Sports games was not of high enough intensity to contribute towards the recommended daily amount of exercise in children.

The air electrode, which reduces oxygen (O2), is a critical component in energy generation and storage applications such as fuel cells and metal/air batteries. The highest current densities are achieved with platinum (Pt), but in addition to its cost and scarcity, Pt particles in composite electrodes tend to be inactivated by contact with carbon monoxide (CO) or by agglomeration. We describe an air electrode based on a porous material coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), which acts as an O2 reduction catalyst. Continuous operation for 1500 hours was demonstrated without material degradation or deterioration in performance. O2 conversion rates were comparable with those of Pt-catalyzed electrodes of the same geometry, and the electrode was not sensitive to CO. Operation was demonstrated as an air electrode and as a dissolved O2 electrode in aqueous solution.

Increasing concern about the environment, food and feed shortages and hike in the price of petroleum have stimulated interest in new ways of producing biofuels. The interest is rapidly increasing towards converting agricultural wastes to commercially valuable products. Biofuels made from waste biomass can offer immediate and sustained greenhouse gas advantages. In this direction, we are focusing on Citrus processing waste, a byproduct of juice manufacture, which contains high amount of flavonoids and polysaccharides. There is a considerable industrial interest in the enzymatic transformation of flavonoids to hydrolysis products; that offers a pathway to bio-energy generation. Rhamnosidase of bacterial origin are very few and thus are potentially subject for research.

Staphylococcus xylosus, Gram positive cocci, a nonpathogenic member of CNS family, isolated from soil was used to produce α-L-rhamnosidase. This new strain, so far unknown for the production of α-L-Rhamnosidase, was identified and characterized as Staphyloccocus sp. through biochemical tests and 16S DNA sequence analysis. Effect of various medium and process parameters like pH, temperature, aeration and agitation rates and inducer concentration were studied. Further, the enzyme activity was enhanced by adding the inducer and divalent metal ion to the optimised fermentation medium. We have recovered important sugars “rhamnose” and “galacturonic acid” from the processed waste which would be utilized for ethanol production. This presentation will summarize current efforts to develop an enzymatic treatment which would facilitate the economical processing of citrus waste for bioenergy generation.

Large amounts of Citrus peel (rich in poly-phenolic compounds) are generated as a by-product of the juice processing industry. Development of alternative, higher valued products utilizing peel waste from grapefruit, oranges, Valencia and other citrus fruit would benefit citrus juice processors by providing them with means to profitably process their peel waste and to avoid environmentally hazardous dumping. Citrus peel waste [CPW, comprised of peel, membranes and juice vesicles] contains a high level of polyphenols and has been used for the production of animal feed, single-cell protein, fibre, enzyme(s), immobilization support & bio-sorbent for heavy metal removal. Naringin (a major tri-hydroxy flavonoid glycoside) is available in large amounts in citrus peel, processed juice and can be extracted from citrus peel waste1. The extracted naringin is further hydrolysed by rhamnosidase to produce D-rhamnose for the production of ethanol and other fermentation products. We have produced a recombinant enzyme2 that has the ability to catalyse the cleavage of terminal rhamnoside groups from naringin to prunin and rhamnose. We have recovered important sugar “D-rhamnose” from the processed waste which would be utilized for ethanol production3. This presentation will summarize current efforts to develop an enzymatic treatment which would facilitate the economical processing of citrus waste for bioenergy generation.

Next Generation DNA sequencing was used to develop a suite of microsatellite markers for the marine mollusk, Donax deltoides. A total of 20 polymorphic loci were identified and 12 characterized using 30 individuals from a single population (Venus Bay) in south eastern Australia. We observed moderate to high genetic variation across most loci (mean number of alleles per locus = 7.3; mean heterozygosity = 0.633) with only a single locus (Ddel32) displaying significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Marker independence was confirmed with tests for linkage disequilibrium, however two loci were found to be influenced by null alleles. The 10 viable markers characterized in the present study provide a valuable resource for future population genetic assessments and fisheries management of D. deltoides in Australia.

Development of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) using a conventional rolling setup is one of the biggest challenges to steel industry. It has been found that fine precipitation in a soft matrix, formed after hot rolling, can markedly improve the mechanical properties. In this work, three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT) has been used to study the formation of precipitates in thermomechanically simulated steel. 3D-APT data reveals co-existence of numerous nano clusters with precipitates. Also, quantitative analysis of the nano clusters and precipitates shows clusters are as small as mm in size. Precipitates are found to be disc shaped with the composition of equilibrium precipitates (TiMo)C. Thus, 3D-APT is seen as an ideal technique to complement TEM to understand the nanoscale features in thermomechanically processed steel for further improvements in the mechanical properties of AHSS.
