In this manuscript, we investigate the importance that must be placed on the selection of standard compounds when undertaking studies to optimize the performance of 2-D-HPLC separations. A geometric approach to factor analysis and a measure of peak density across the separation space were applied to assess localized measures of component distributions within the 2-D separation plane. The results of this analysis of data showed that the measure of separation quality varied markedly, depending on the elution zone for which the test was undertaken. The study concluded that if standards cannot be obtained that adequately describe the entire sample matrix, the sample itself should be used, and also, the separation should be optimized for regions of interest, not necessarily the separation as a whole.

Acrylamide hydrogels were synthesized in the presence of various non-solvents for linear polyacrylamide to examine phase separation during polymerization. The process was found to be dependent upon the segmental volume, the chemical structure, and the concentration of the non-solvent. The concept of conversion-phase diagram for linear polymer is introduced and used qualitatively to understand polymerization induced phase separation (PIPS), and to predict the onset of PIPS during hydrogel synthesis.

Semi-automated flow injection instrumentation, incorporating a small anion exchange column coupled with tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bipy)32+) chemiluminescence detection, was configured and utilised to develop rapid methodology for the determination of sodium oxalate in Bayer liquors. The elimination of both negative and positive interferences from aluminium(III) and, as yet, unknown concomitant organic species, respectively are discussed. The robustness of the methodology was considerably enhanced by using the temporally stable form of the chemiluminescence reagent, tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(III) perchlorate in dry acetonitrile. Real Bayer process samples were analysed and the results obtained compared well with those performed using standard methods within industrial laboratories.

The mono-isopropylamine salt of glyphosate was selectively determined directly in industrial and commercial formulations using flow injection analysis with tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) chemiluminescence detection without the need for separation. Glyphosate and its mono-isopropylamine salt furnished detection limits of 7×10−9 and 3.5×10−10 M and relative standard deviations of 0.4% at 1×10−7 M and 0.8% at 5×10−8 M, respectively. The methodology is robust and reliable with samples subjected only to aqueous dilution prior to analysis.

Explores the happiness-based theory of the corporation, suggesting that there is no conflict between the pursuance of economic and social objectives on the basis that their interplay is required to facilitate shareholder happiness. Considers: (1) the Berle-Means hypothesis and the separation of ownership and control, the dominant governance structure for large companies; (2) a happiness-based perspective on the separation; and (3) law reform applicable to a happiness-based theory. Argues that the separation of ownership and control is not in shareholders' best interests because the structure is not conducive to the happiness of individual shareholders and should be reformed.

Blends of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP-b-PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self-assembled nanostructures of the P2VP-b-PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes.

Block copolymer systems with hydrogen bonding interactions have received relatively little attention. Recently, we have investigated the self-assembly and phase separation in such block copolymer systems with an attempt to elucidate the role of hydrogen bonding interactions both theoretically and experimentally [1-4]. In A-b-B/C diblock copolymer/homopolymer systems, the phase behavior was theoretically analyzed according to the random phase approximation and correlated with hydrogen bonding interactions in terms of the difference in inter-association constants (K). To examine how the hydrogen bonding determines the self-assembly and morphological transitions in these systems, we have introduced the K values as a new variable into the phase diagram which we established for the first time (Fig. 1). Multiple vesicular morphologies were formed in aqueous solution of A-b-B/A-b-C diblock copolymer complexes of PS-b-PAA and PS-b-PEO. Interconnected compound vesicles (ICCVs) were observed for the first time as a new morphology (Fig. 2), along with other aggregated nanostructures including vesicles, multilamellar vesicles, thick-walled vesicles and irregular aggregates. Complexation of two amphiphilic diblock copolymers provides a viable approach to vesicles in aqueous media.

The interlaminar toughening of a carbon fibre reinforced composite by interleaving a thin layer (~20 microns) of poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) nanofibres was explored in this work. Nanofibres, free of defect and averaging several hundred nanometres, were produced by electrospinning directly onto a pre-impregnated carbon fibre material (Toray G83C) at various concentrations between 0.5 wt % and 2 wt %. During curing at 150 °C, phenoxy diffuses through the epoxy resin to form a semi interpenetrating network with an inverse phase type of morphology where the epoxy became the co-continuous phase with a nodular morphology. This type of morphology improved the fracture toughness in mode I (opening failure) and mode II (in-plane shear failure) by up to 150% and 30%, respectively. Interlaminar shear stress test results showed that the interleaving did not negatively affect the effective in-plane strength of the composites. Furthermore, there was some evidence from DMTA and FT-IR analysis to suggest that inter-domain etherification between the residual epoxide groups with the pendant hydroxyl groups of the phenoxy occurred, also leading to an increase in glass transition temperature (~7.5 °C).

The multidimensional high-performance liquid chromatography separations of the complex sample matrix found in café espresso coffee were completed on the propyl phenyl and butyl phenyl columns that contain 3 and 4 carbon atoms in the spacer chain, respectively. Phenyl type stationary phases are able to undergo unique π–π interactions with aromatic compounds. Previous works have found that there are differences in retention characteristics between these chain lengths and this was explored further here. It was found that when analysing the separations by quadrants, using a geometric approach to factor analysis and by measuring the normalised mean radius, subtle differences in the separations were observed and the butyl phenyl phase was more selective for the high to medium polarity species. However, there was very little difference in separation behaviour for the hydrophobic components within the coffee sample. Overall, the analysis of the entire separation showed very little difference.

As the focus on developing new polymer electrolytes continues to intensify in the area of alternative energy conversion and storage devices, the rational design of polyelectrolytes with high single ion transport rates has emerged as a primary strategy for enhancing device performance. Previously, we reported a series of sulfonate based copolymer ionomers based on using mixed bulky quaternary ammonium cations and sodium cations as the ionomer counterions. This led to improvements in the ionic conductivity and an apparent decoupling from the Tg of the ionomer. In this article, we have prepared a new series of ionomers based on the homopolymer of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonic acid) using differing sizes of the ammonium counter-cations. We observe a decreasing Tg with increasing the bulkiness of the quaternary ammonium cation, and an increasing degree of decoupling from Tg within these systems. Somewhat surprisingly, phase separation is observed in this homopolymer system, as evidenced from multiple impedance arcs, Raman mapping and SEM. The thermal properties, morphology and the effect of plasticizer on the transport properties in these ionomers are also presented. The addition of 10 wt% plasticizer increased the ionic conductivity between two and three orders of magnitudes leading to materials that may have applications in sodium based devices. BackgroundMajor depressive disorder (MDD) is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), and influences the occurrence and prognosis of cardiovascular events. Although there is evidence that antidepressants may be cardioprotective after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) comorbid with MDD, the operative pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Our aim was therefore to explore the molecular mechanisms of escitalopram on myocardial apoptosis and the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in a rat model of depression during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R).MethodsRats were divided randomly into 3 groups (n = 8): D group (depression), DI/R group (depression with myocardial I/R) and escitalopram + DI/R group. The rats in all three groups underwent the same chronic mild stress and separation for 21 days, at the same time, in the escitalopram + DI/R group, rats were administered escitalopram by gavage (10 mg/kg/day). Ligation of the rat¿s left anterior descending branch was done in the myocardial I/R model. Following which behavioral tests were done. The size of the myocardial infarction was detected using 1.5% TTC dye. The Tunel method was used to detect apoptotic myocardial cells, and both the Rt-PCR method and immunohistochemical techniques were used to detect the expression of Bcl¿2 and Bax.ResultsCompared with the D and DI/R groups, rats in Escitalopram + DI/R group showed significantly increased movements and sucrose consumption (P < .01). Compared with the DI/R group, the myocardial infarct size in the escitalopram + DI/R group was significantly decreased (P < .01). Compared with the D group, there were significantly increased apoptotic myocardial cells in the DI/R and escitalopram + DI/R groups (P < .01); however compared with the DI/R group, apoptotic myocardial cell numbers in the escitalopram + DI/R group were significantly decreased (P < .01). Compared with the DI/R group, there was a down-regulated Bax:Bcl-2 ratio in the escitalopram + DI/R group (P < .01).ConclusionsThese results suggest that in patients with AMI comorbid with MDD, there is an increase in pro-apoptotic pathways that is reversed by escitalopram. This suggests that clinically escitalopram may have a direct cardioprotective after acute myocardial infarction.

A new route to prepare nanostructured thermosets by the utilization of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions is demonstrated here. In this study, competitive hydrogen-bonding-induced microphase separation (CHIPS) in epoxy resin (ER) containing an amphiphilic block copolymer poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP) is investigated for the first time. The phase separation takes place due to the disparity in the hydrogen-bonding interactions in ER/P2VP and ER/PCL pairs leading to the formation of ordered nanostructures in the ER/block copolymer blends. SAXS and TEM results indicate that the hexagonally packed cylindrical morphology of neat PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer remains but becomes a core-shell structure at 10 wt % addition of ER, and changes to regular lamellae structures at 20-50 wt % then to disordered lamellae with 60 wt % ER. Wormlike structures are obtained in the blends with 70 wt % ER, followed by a completely homogeneous phase of ER/P2VP and ER/PCL. The formation of nanostructures and changes in morphologies depend on the relative strength of hydrogen-bonding interactions between each component block copolymer and the homopolymer. This versatile method to develop nanostructured thermosets, involving competitive hydrogen-bonding interactions, could be used for the fabrication of hierarchical and functional materials.
