Poetry as a starting point for drama: learning to tolerate ambiguity

This article explores the use of process drama in an English classroom to explore issues raised by 'A poem for the Rainforest' by Judith Nicholls. The drama is used to explore both the themes and forms of the poem, the episodic nature of the drama reflecting the episodic form of the poem. The work engages the students, and the process drama works to layer complexity onto the issues rather than simplifying them.

Creating ambiguity, creating social change

Current government policy in Victoria, as elsewhere, is seeking to change the provision of maternity care from an obstetric-led system to a flatter, more collaborative system that brings midwives to the front line as primary carers, at least in the public sector.

However, dominant medical discourses continue to exert a sedimentary effect on contesting claims from midwives that deny the high-risk nature of the majority of births and which valorise the competence of the female body. Although there have been modifications in maternity arrangements (and the incumbent government is currently considering more), medical discourses continue to legitimate obstetric power via legal and professional structures, fortify the obstetric ‘habitus’, infect mainstream popular consciousness and undermine autonomous midwifery practice. Drawing from research material gleaned from in-depth interviews with nine obstetricians and thirty midwives conducted in 2004 and 2005, I argue that alternative discourses may strategically undermine obstetric dominance. Specifically, reversing stereotypes; inverting the binary opposition and privileging the subordinate term (or substituting the negative for positive); and defamiliarizing what is perceived to be fixed and given, all play on the ambiguities of representation and present social activists (midwives, childbirth educators and women) with valuable opportunities to challenge fundamentalist medical orthodoxies.

Strategic knowledge for the identification and construction of goal states

There is widespread recognition that goal recognition strategies, in the context of structural analysis and cognitive (user) models, represent a major field of contemporary research into discourse understanding. This thesis reports a goal interpretation paradigm that embraces both a novel goal structure formalism and strategic knowledge. The goal interpretation processes involve the identification of goal primitives and the construction of goal states. The mechanisms developed for goal interpretation rely on explicit goal recognition (selection) and confirmation of feasibility. A goal state contains all the information required by the planner. By constructing a goal state, the chance of failure in planning is greatly reduced and the efficiency of the planning system is vastly improved. These mechanisms are not limited to inference. Other mechanisms are reported include goal structure processing, goal primitives identification and searching strategies, extended heuristic classification method and a new conceptual graph operation (i.e. SPLIT).

Managing negotiation knowledge with the goal of developing negotiation decision support systems

While Information Technology has been used to support negotiation there is little research in the domain of knowledge management in legal negotiation. In this paper we discuss the nature of negotiation knowledge and how such knowledge can be utilized to construct negotiation decision support systems. We conduct an in-depth examination of the notion of a BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and given a useful BATNA, how we can use issue and preference elicitation and compensation and trade-off strategies to provide negotiation decision support. We conclude by indicating how current negotiation support systems can be extended to support Online Dispute Resolution and haw we can extend the Family_Winner system in light of the need to more adequately manage negotiation knowledge.

Alchemy & ambiguity : poetic responses to visual art, primarily portraiture

The author critiques the contemporary definition of poetry responding to art (the verbal representation of visual representation), and shows that this process is unstable and introduces changes, and by this means the visual work of art and the poem complement each other to influence the viewer/reader to produce new meanings.

Optimistic fair exchange with strong resolution-ambiguity

Optimistic fair exchange (OFE) allows two parties to exchange their digital items in a fair way. As one of the fundamental problems in secure electronic business and digital rights management, OFE has been studied intensively since its introduction. This paper introduces and defines a new property for OFE: Strong Resolution-Ambiguity. We show that many existing OFE protocols have the new property, but its formal investigation has been missing in those protocols. We prove that in the certified-key model, an OFE protocol is secure in the multi-user setting if it is secure in the single-user setting and has the property of strong resolution-ambiguity. Our result not only simplifies the security analysis of OFE protocols in the multi-user setting but also provides a new approach for the design of multi-user secure OFE protocols. Following this approach, a new OFE protocol with strong resolution-ambiguity is proposed. Our analysis shows that the protocol is setup-free, stand-alone and multi-user secure without random oracles.
