The acceptance/rejection approach is widely used in universal nonuniform random number generators. Its key part is an accurate approximation of a given probability density from above by a hat function. This article uses a piecewise constant hat function, whose values are overestimates of the density on the elements of the partition of the domain. It uses a sawtooth overestimate of Lipschitz continuous densities, and then examines all local maximizers of such an overestimate. The method is applicable to multivariate multimodal distributions. It exhibits relatively short preprocessing time and fast generation of random variates from a very large class of distributions

Species assemblages of systems of islands and other fragmented habitats frequently show a "nested-subset" structure in which the biotas of sites with low species richness are non-random subsets of the biotas of richer sites. Much literature suggests that extinction is more likely to produce strongly nested patterns than colonization, although very few experiments have been conducted on the generation of nested-subset patterns. Here, we describe an experiment on nestedness of benthic invertebrates occupying rocks in the littoral zone of a lake in western Victoria, Australia. Data collected from previous work indicated that the invertebrate biotas of rocks were nested. We used initially defaunated, different-sized habitat patches (half house-bricks, full house-bricks, double house-bricks) and followed the time-course of occupation to assess whether nested-subset patterns would emerge, and whether extinction or colonization best accounted for the patterns. We predicted that nestedness would increase through time up to the end of the experiment. This was found to be the case with colonization dominating the establishment of a strongly nested system; extinction appeared to be of relatively little importance over the duration of the experiment. These results suggest that at least in some circumstances, differential colonization may be influential in producing nested-subset patterns but experiments conducted over longer times may be needed to more completely understand the respective roles of extinction and colonization in generating nested-subset patterns in this system.

This paper presents a novel optical fibre based micro contact probe system with high sensitivity and repeatability. In this optical fibre probe with a fused spherical tip, a fibre Bragg grating has been utilized as a strain sensor in the probe stem. When the probe tip contacts the surface of the part, a strain will be induced along the probe stem and will produce a Bragg wavelength shift. The contact signal can be issued once the wavelength shift signal is produced and demodulated. With the fibre grating sensor element integrated into the probe directly, the probe system shows a high sensitivity. In this work, the strain distributions along the probe stem with the probe under axial and lateral load are analysed. A simulation of the strain distribution was performed using the finite element package ANSYS 11. Performance tests using a piezoelectric transducer stage with a displacement resolution of 1.5 nm yielded a measurement resolution of 60 nm under axial loading.

The fibre generator shape and dimension are key factors affecting the needleless electrospinning process and fibre fineness. In this work, cylinder with rounded rim, disc and ball were used as spinnerets to electrospin polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylonitrile solutions. A finite element method was used to analyse how the spinneret geometry affected the electric field generated during electrospinning and the associated changes in fibre diameter and productivity. For cylinder spinnerets, increasing the rim radius reduced the discrepancy of electric field intensity between the cylinder end and middle area, which affected the fibre productivity. The electrospinning failed to operate when the rim radius was over 20 mm. With decreasing cylinder diameter, the electric field intensity in the middle area increased, improving the fibre productivity. Thinner disc spinnerets increased the electric field intensity, resulting in finer nanofibres and higher productivities. Ball spinnerets produced evenly distributed electric field, but failed to electrospin fibres when the diameters were below 60 mm. It has been found that strong and narrowly distributed electric field in the fibre-generating area can significantly facilitate the mass production of quality nanofibres.

This paper considers the design of state observers for interconnected time-delay systems using a coordinate transformation method. Through such a transformation, the system that has interconnection and state delays is metamorphosed into a new system that injects time-delay information into its input and output terms, before reintroducing them back into the latter system, effectively coupling the delay terms into the IO injection terms and eliminating the delay values from the state variables. Next, full-order and reduced-order observers are designed based on the transformed system. Finally, the observed states of the transformed system that correspond to the original system is used to deduce the estimates of the original system. A numerical example is provided of an interconnected time-delay system.

Green energy targets for coming decades advocates high penetration of wind energy in main energy matrix which also pose incendiary threat to stability and reliability of modern electric grid if their dynamic performance aspects are not assessed beforehand. Considering increasing interest in dynamic performance along with ancillary service assessment related to frequency regulation, development of suitable generic modeling has gained high priority. This paper presents modeling of type 4 full converter wind turbine generator system suitable for frequency regulation focusing on active power control. Complete model is a modification of WECC generic model with additional aerodynamic and pitch control model. Descriptions of individual sub models are presented and performance results are compared manufacturer specific GE type 4 WTG generic model by means of simulations in the MATLAB ® Power System Block set.

This paper presents simple methods of determining parameters of interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous generator such as magnet flux (λM), d-axis inductance (Ld) and q-axis inductance (Lq) of IPM synchronous generator, which are used to control the wind turbine generator. These methods are simple and do not require any complex theory, signal injection or special equipment. Moreover, a sensorless speed estimator is proposed to estimate the speed of the generator without using speed sensor. The measured parameters are used in this speed estimator. The elimination of speed sensor will enhance the system robustness and reduce the design complexity and system cost for a small-scale wind turbine considered in this paper. The effectiveness of parameter measurement methods and sensorless speed estimator is demonstrated by experimental results. Experimental results show that the proposed speed estimator that uses the measured parameters can estimate the generator speed with a small error.

Wind energy system integration can lead to adverse effects on modern electric grid so it is imperative toassess their dynamic performance before actual plant startup. Transmission system operators all over theworld stress the need for a proper wind turbine generator model for dynamic performance as well asancillary service assessments. Due to the bulk power system assessment requirements, developmentof suitable generic modeling has gained high priority. Generic modeling of type 4 full converter wind turbinegenerator system for application in frequency ancillary service investigations under varying windspeed and varying reference power has been presented in this study. Prevalent generic model, manufacturerspecific proprietary generic model along with detailed wind turbine model with synchronous generatoris also provided to highlight various modelling framework difference. Descriptions of individualsub models of proposed generic model are presented in detail and performance results are comparedand validated with GE’s proprietary generic model and detailed WTG model by means of simulationsin the MATLAB Power System Block set.
