The family Conescharellinidae Levinsen is defined and is regarded as comprising seven cheilostome genera (Conescharellina, Bipora, Trochosodon, Flabellopora, Zeuglopora, Crucescharellina and Ptoboroa). The astogeny of colonies, that consists of frontally budded zooids with "reversed" orientation, is briefly described and compared between genera. The morphology of zooids and heterozooids is defined and keys to genera and Australian species are provided. Taxa that were first described from Australia or from reliable subsequent records are redescribed and illustrated where possible. Australian specimens that have been identified as non-Australian species, have generally been found to be distinct and are here redescribed as new species. Some non-Australian records of specimens previously assigned to Australian species have also been re-examined. These are described and sometimes referred to other taxa. Altogether, eight previously described species that have not been found in the present material are discussed and 27 taxa are described from collections, principally from the eastern and southern coasts of Australia and from the Tertiary of Victoria. Eighteen of these are considered to be new species. Where possible, type or at least topotype material of previously described species has been examined. Colonies from the collections of Museum Victoria (NMV) and the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH), have been examined. New species from Australia described here are: Conescharellina cognata, C. ecstasis, C. diffusa, C. obscura, C. stellata, C. plana, C. perculta, C. pustulosa, C. ocellata, C. macgillivrayi, C. humerus; Trochosodon fecundus, T. asymmetricus, T. diommatus, T. aster, T. anomalus, T. praecox and Crucescharellina australis. In addition, the New Zealand bryozoan Trochosodon multiarmatus (Gordon, 1989) (not Bipora multiarmata Maplestone, 1909) is described as Trochosodon gordoni sp. nov.

Archaeologists are often confronted with sites featuring post-occupation disturbance. At rural sites, this disturbance often comes in the form of agricultural activity, such as ploughing and grazing. These disturbances can call into question the value of site spatial relationships and broader data integrity. Between 2006 and 2007, archaeologists from La Trobe University and New Zealand-based consultancy firm Geometria carried out a programme of fieldwork at an 18411861 cottage in Gippsland, Victoria. The site is now an open grazing paddock that has been ploughed on several occasions in the past. The survey techniques used by the archaeological team, which included geomagnetic survey and artefact surface scatter mapping, allowed for testing the integrity of the ploughed archaeological deposits prior to excavation, and provide a case study for the applicability of ploughzone archaeology techniques to Australian historic sites.

Burrowing bivalves are associated with particular sediment types within sedimentary systems. The degree to which bivalve sediment associations are repeatable across systems has seldom been investigated. To investigate whether such repeatability exists across tidal flats, we compared adult and juvenile distributions of 3 bivalve species (Cerastoderma edule, Scrobicularia plana, Macoma balthica) across 6 European tidal flats. Across systems, the adult bivalves showed fairly repeatable distributions, with C. edule occurring in sandy sediments and M. balthica and S. plana occurring in muddy sediments. Exceptions were observed in systems composed primarily of muddy sediments (Aiguillon Bay and Marennes-Oléron Bay) and the Dutch Wadden Sea. Interestingly, juveniles and adults of C. edule and S. plana showed similar distributions across systems. M. balthica juveniles and adults showed habitat separation in 3 of the 6 studied systems; in 2 of these, it has been shown previously that juvenile M. balthica settle in mud at high tidal levels and migrate to lower sandier flats later in life. The high occurrence of juvenile M. balthica towards high sandy flats in Mont Saint-Michel Bay suggests that juveniles might choose high tidal flats rather than muddy sediments per se. A repeatable association in adults and juveniles with respect to sediment could suggest that juveniles actively settle in the proximity of the adults and/or that juveniles settling away from the adults incur a higher mortality due to either predation, physiological stress, or other factors.
