A project was undertaken in a Hong Kong primary school to investigate the role of music notation software in leaching music composition. The project was divided into three stages. During the first stage, appropriate hardware equipment and software applications were installed in the school music room, and four teaching plans were developed on the models and strategies derived from findings in the local and international literature. During the second stage, these teaching plans were implemented in Grade One, Grade Three, Grade Five and Grade Six classes of the school. During the third stage, the effectiveness of these teaching activities was evaluated by comparing the experiences from the second stage to the corresponding findings from similar projects undertaken in other Hong Kong primary schools, as well as to findings from the international literature. The results demonstrated that tile visual and audio stimulation created by computer"based technology can motivate students to successfully engage in music composition. Moreover, computer"based technology provides an opportunity for students to compose music in an atonal idiom. However, a large number of students were unable to demonstrate the concept of structural design in their musical products, and one of the findings from this investigation was that teachers need to be more purposeful in their teaching by directing students to employ the technique of repetition of interesting musical fragments or phrases in order to achieve a sense of unity in their pieces.

Acute myocardial infarction (M!) is the commonest cause of death in the developed countries, and it is on the rise in developing countries. Ramipril is a well-knownAngiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitorwhich inhibits conversion ofinactive angiotensin I to active angiotensin II. Experimental studies have shown thatACE inhibitors administered chronicallybefore acuteMImight limitmyocardial infarct size, improve cardiac function and prevent cardiac hypertrophy [1, 2]. The Chinese herb, Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM), has been widely and successfully usedmainly for anginapectoris,MI and stroke [3]. Compared to ramipril, however, there is very limited biochemical information availableto demonstrate themechanismsofSMs
cardio-protective effects. This study thus investigates the possible
biochemical and molecularmechanisms ofsuch effects ofSMin Wistar rats in comparison with those oframipril.

In the current study, we compared purified Salvia miltiorrhiza extract (PSME) with Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, Ramipril, in in vitro experiments and also in vivo using animal model of myocardial infarction. PSME was found to have a significantly higher trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity which indicated a great capacity for scavenging free radicals. PSME could also prevent pyrogallo red bleaching and DNA damage.

After 2 weeks treatment with PSME or Ramipril, survival rates of rats with experimental myocardial infarction were marginally increased (68.2% and 71.4%) compared with saline (61.5%). The ratios of infarct size to left ventricular size in both PSME-and Ramipril-treated rats were significantly less than that in the saline-treated group. Activity of cardiac antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significant higher while level of Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs) was lower in the PSME treated group. Purified and standardized Chinese herb could provide an alternative regimen for the prevention of ischemic heart disease.

To assess cooperation between G-CSF signals and C/EBP, we characterized Ba/F3 pro-B cell lines expressing C/EBPWT-ER and the G-CSF receptor (GCSFR). In these lines, GCSFR signals can be evaluated independent of their effect on C/EBP levels. G-CSF alone did not induce the MPO, NE, LF, or PU.1 RNAs, and C/EBPWT-ER alone stimulated low-level MPO and high-level PU.1 expression. Simultaneous activation of the GCSFR and C/EBPWT-ER markedly increased MPO and NE induction at 24 h, and LF mRNA was detected at 48 h. G-CSF did not increase endogenous GCSFR, endogenous C/EBP or exogenous C/EBPWT-ER levels, and C/EBPWT-ER did not induce endogenous or exogenous GCSFR. Several GCSFR mutants were also co-expressed with C/EBPWT-ER. Mutation of all four cytoplasmic tyrosines prevented NE induction but enhanced MPO induction. Mutation of Y704 was required for increased MPO induction. Consistent with this finding, removing IL-3 without G-CSF addition enabled MPO, but not NE, induction by C/EBPWT-ER. GCSFR signals or related signals from other receptors may cooperate with C/EBP to direct differentiation of normal myeloid stem cells.

This paper evaluates the costs of inflation in Australia and New Zealand using a compensated measure calculated by calibrating a general equilibrium search model in the vein of Lagos and Wright (2005). We look at how inflation affects the intensive margin (the quantity traded in each match) by examining the impact of various pricing protocols. We also look at how inflation affects the extensive margin (the number of trades) by making the market composition between buyers and sellers endogenous. We obtain much larger costs of inflation than existing studies, but smaller costs than similar studies conducted on the US economy. Depending on the version of the model the costs of 10% inflation for a $50,000 worker ranges from $250 to $2200 per year in Australia, and from $200 to $1700 in New Zealand, that is between 0.5% and 4.4% of GDP and between 0.4% and 3.4% of GDP respectively. Finally it is calculated that Australia could gain up to 1.6% of GDP per annum--1.2% for New Zealand--by implementing the Friedman rule.

This article reports the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of MXD6 and its clay nanocomposite system (MXD6/MMT) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC experimental data were analyzed by theoretical modeling of the crystallization kinetics using the Avrami, Ozawa, Jeziorny, and the combined Avrami―Ozawa semiempirical models. It has been determined that these models adequately described the crystallization behavior of the MXD6 nanocomposite at cooling rates below 20 °C/min, but there was a deviation from linear dependence at higher cooling rates. This was attributed to changes of both the free energy and the cooling crystallization function K(T) over the entire crystallization process, as well as possible relaxation effects leading to structural rearrangements. In addition, the activation energy determined using the differential isoconversional method of Friedman was also found to vary, indicating changes in both the free energy and crystallization mechanism. Despite the lack of a reliable theoretical model, the heterogeneous nucleating activity of the MMT nanoparticles was demonstrated and quantified using Dobreva's method (Φ = 0.71), and the crystallization rate for the nanocomposite system was found to be greater than pure MXD6 by up to 79% at 40 °C/min.

A new online neural-network-based regression model for noisy data is proposed in this paper. It is a hybrid system combining the Fuzzy ART (FA) and General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) models. Both the FA and GRNN models are fast incremental learning systems. The proposed hybrid model, denoted as GRNNFA-online, retains the online learning properties of both models. The kernel centers of the GRNN are obtained by compressing the training samples using the FA model. The width of each kernel is then estimated by the K-nearest-neighbors (kNN) method. A heuristic is proposed to tune the value of Kof the kNN dynamically based on the concept of gradient-descent. The performance of the GRNNFA-online model was evaluated using two benchmark datasets, i.e., OZONE and Friedman#1. The experimental results demonstrated the convergence of the prediction errors. Bootstrapping was employed to assess the performance statistically. The final prediction errors are analyzed and compared with those from other systems.Bootstrapping was employed to assess the performance statistically. Background: The World Health Organization currently recommends combined streptomycin and rifampicin antibiotic treatment as first-line therapy for Mycobacterium ulcerans infections. Alternatives are needed when these are not tolerated or accepted by patients, contraindicated, or neither accessible nor affordable. Despite in vitro effectiveness, clinical evidence for fluoroquinolone antibiotic use against Mycobacterium ulcerans is lacking. We describe outcomes and tolerability of
fluoroquinolone-containing antibiotic regimens for Mycobacterium ulcerans in south-eastern Australia.

Methodology/Principal Findings:
Analysis was performed of prospectively collected data including all primary Mycobacterium ulcerans infections treated at Barwon Health between 1998 and 2010. Medical treatment involved antibiotic use for more than 7 days; surgical treatment involved surgical excision of a lesion. Treatment success was defined as complete lesion healing without recurrence at 12 months follow-up. A complication was defined as an adverse event attributed to an antibiotic that required its cessation. A total of 133 patients with 137 lesions were studied. Median age was
62 years (range 3–94 years). 47 (34%) had surgical treatment alone, and 90 (66%) had combined surgical and medical treatment. Rifampicin and ciprofloxacin comprised 61% and rifampicin and clarithromycin 23% of first-line antibiotic
regimens. 13/47 (30%) treated with surgery alone failed treatment compared to 0/90 (0%) of those treated with combination medical and surgical treatment (p,0.0001). There was no difference in treatment success rate for antibiotic combinations containing a fluoroquinolone (61/61 cases; 100%) compared with those not containing a fluoroquinolone (29/29 cases; 100%). Complication rates were similar between ciprofloxacin and rifampicin (31%) and rifampicin and clarithromycin (33%) regimens (OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.27–2.99). Paradoxical reactions during treatment were observed in 8 (9%) of antibiotic treated cases.

Conclusions:
Antibiotics combined with surgery may significantly increase treatment success for Mycobacterium ulcerans infections, and fluoroquinolone combined with rifampicin-containing antibiotic regimens can provide an effective and safe oral treatment option.

Objective: To describe risk factors for recurrence after exclusive surgical treatment of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection. Design, setting and participants: Prospective observational cohort study of all M. ulcerans cases managed with surgery alone at Barwon Health, a tertiary referral hospital, from 1 January 1998 to 31 December 2011. A random-effects Poisson regression model was used to assess rates and associations of treatment failure. Main outcome measures: Rates of treatment failure and rate ratios (RRs) for factors associated with treatment failure. Results: Of 192 patients with M. ulcerans infection, 50 (26%) had exclusive surgical treatment. Median age was 65.0 years (interquartile range [IQR], 45.5-77.7 years), and median duration of symptoms was 46 days (IQR, 26-90 days). There were 20 recurrences in 16 patients. For first lesions, the recurrence incidence rate was 41.8 (95% CI, 25.6-68.2) per 100 person-years, and median time to recurrence was 50 days (IQR, 30-171 days). Recurrence occurred ≤ 3 cm from the original lesion in 13 cases, and >3 cm in nine. On univariable analysis, age ≥60 years (RR 13.84; 95% CI, 2.21-86.68; P< 0.01), distal lesions (RR, 20.43; 95% CI, 1.97-212.22; P<0.01), positive histological margins (RR, 21.02; 95% CI, 5.51-80.26; P< 0.001), immunosuppression (RR, 17.97; 95% CI, 4.17-77.47; P <0.01) and duration of symptoms >75 days (RR, 10.13; 95% CI, 1.76-58.23; P =0.02) were associated with treatment failure. On multivariable analysis, positive margins (RR, 7.72; 95% CI, 2.71-22.01; P<0.001) and immunosuppression (RR, 6.45; 95% CI, 2.42-17.20; P =0.01) remained associated with treatment failure. Conclusions: Recurrence rates after exclusive surgical treatment of M. ulcerans disease in an Australian cohort are high, with increased rates associated with immunosuppression or positive histological margins.
