In the solid state, (-)-tris([1R,2S,5R]-menthyl)tin fluoride, Men3SnF (6), exhibits a dimeric structure in which one tin atom is four-coordinate and the other five-coordinate. This novel dimeric association mode is attributed to the orientation of the unsymmetrical menthyl groups, which are arranged to allow a minimum Sn···Sn separation of 4.84 Å within the dimer. The exocyclic isopropyl groups of the menthyl groups point in opposite directions on each tin atom of the dimer, thus preventing further association (Sn···Sn separation outside the dimer 10.49 Å). 119Sn and 19F MAS NMR spectroscopy were utilized to probe the diverse coordination numbers found by X-ray crystallography for the geometries of the two tin and fluorine sites. In solution, 6 is a monomer at both room temperature and -100 °C. However, upon addition of Bu4NF, 6 is in equilibrium with [(Men3SnF)2F]- (6a), [Men3SnF2]- (6b), and noncoordinating fluoride anions.

The reaction of diorganotin sulfides, cyclo-(R2SnS)n (R=Me, n-Bu; n=3; R=t-Bu; n=2) with the corresponding diorganotin dichlorides, R2SnCl2, provided the tetraorganodistannathianes, (R2ClSn)2S (1, R=Me; 2, R=n-Bu; 3, R=t-Bu). 1H-, 13C-, and 119Sn-NMR studies indicate that these compounds are kinetically labile and in equilibrium with the starting materials. Addition of equimolar amounts of [(Ph3P)2N]Cl to the reaction mixtures gave the chloride complexes [(Ph3P)2N]+[S(SnR2Cl)2Cl] (4, R=Me; 5, R=n-Bu; 6, R=t-Bu). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed the tin atoms in both 4 and 6 to adopt distorted trigonal bipyramidal configurations with the chlorine atoms occupying the axial positions.

The purpose of the study was to quantify the strength of motor-unit coherence from the left and right first dorsal interosseous muscles in untrained, skill-trained (musicians), and strength-trained (weightlifters) individuals who had long-term specialized use of their hand muscles. The strength of motor-unit coherence was quantified from a total of 394 motor-unit pairs in 13 subjects using data from a previous study in which differences were found in the strength of motor-unit synchronization depending on training status. In the present study, we found that the strength of motor-unit coherence was significantly greater in the left compared with the right hand of untrained right-handed subjects with the largest differences observed between 21 and 24 Hz. The strength of motor-unit coherence was lower in both hands of skill-trained subjects (21–27 Hz) and the right (skilled) hand of untrained subjects (21–24 Hz), whereas the largest motor-unit coherence was observed in both hands of strength-trained subjects (3–9 and 21–27 Hz). A strong curvilinear association was observed between motor-unit synchronization and the integral of coherence at 10–30 Hz in all motor-unit pairs (r2 = 0.77), and was most pronounced in strength-trained subjects (r2 = 0.90). Furthermore, this association was accentuated when using synchronization data with broad peaks (>11 ms), suggesting that the 10- to 30-Hz coherence is due to oscillatory activity in indirect branched common inputs. The altered coherence with training may be due to an interaction between cortical inhibition and the number of direct common inputs to motor neurons in skill- or strength-trained hands.

One of the major challenges in assessing the mechanical properties of recovery annealed steel is the strain localization that occurs almost immediately on the formation of the first Lüders band, such that no or limited propagation of the Lüders band occurs along the tensile coupon. The stress raiser associated with the geometry of the standard tensile coupon means that this plastic deformation is often completely outside the standard extensometers on the coupon. Hence, no strain is measured during the test. While this is not important for assessing the tensile strength of the steel, it does mean that the strain related properties, such as the elastic limit of the steel, cannot be measured using standard testing techniques.This work addresses this issue by examining three techniques for ensuring that the strain occurs inside the extensometer. It is shown that the best technique is the extended extensometer, where the gauge length covers slightly more than the tensile coupon parallel length. While this leads to some variation in the width of the material being measured, compensation can be be made by adjusting the strain to correct the Young's Modulus.This technique has direct implications not just for recovery annealed steels, but for other high strength, low work hardening materials such as ultrafine ferrite. A particular requirement of these high strength steels in structural applications is a high elastic limit; hence, measurement of the strain related properties for these high strength materials must be considered vital in their mechanical assessment.

The dynamics of fatty acid composition modifications were examined in tissues of Murray cod fed diets containing fish oil (FO), canola oil (CO) and linseed oil (LO) for a 25-week period and subsequently transferred to a FO (finishing/wash-out) diet for a further 16 weeks. At the commencement of the wash-out period, following 25 weeks of vegetable oil substitution diets, the fatty acid compositions of Murray cod fillets were reflective of the respective diets. After transfer to the FO diet, differences decreased in quantity and in numerousness, resulting in a revert to the FO fatty acid composition. Changes in percentages of the fatty acids and total accumulation in the fillet could be described by exponential equations and demonstrated that major modifications occurred in the first days of the finishing period. A dilution model was tested to predict fatty acid composition. In spite of a general reliability of the model (Y=0.9234X+0.4260, R2=0.957, P<0.001, where X is the predicted percentage of fatty acid; Y the observed percentage of fatty acid), in some instances the regression comparing observed and predicted values was markedly different from the line of equity, indicating that the rate of change was higher than predicted (i.e. Y=0.4205X+1.191, R2=0.974, P<0.001, where X is the predicted percentage of α-linolenic acid; Y the observed percentage of α-linolenic acid). Ultimately, using the coefficient of distance (D), it was shown that the fatty acid composition of fish previously fed the vegetable oil diets returned to the average variability of the fillet fatty acid composition of Murray cod after 70 or 97 days (LO and CO respectively).

Important sex differences in cardiovascular disease outcomes exist, including conditions of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and cardiac ischemia. Studies of sex differences in the extent to which load-independent (primary) hypertrophy modulates the response to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) damage have not been characterized. We have previously described a model of primary genetic cardiac hypertrophy, the hypertrophic heart rat (HHR). In this study the sex differences in HHR cardiac function and responses to I/R [compared to control normal heart rat (NHR)] were investigated ex vivo. The ventricular weight index was markedly increased in HHR female (7.82 ± 0.49 vs. 4.80 ± 0.10 mg/g; P < 0.05) and male (5.76 ± 0.22 vs. 4.62 ± 0.07 mg/g; P < 0.05) hearts. Female hearts of both strains exhibited a reduced basal contractility compared with strain-matched males [maximum first derivative of pressure (dP/dtmax): NHR, 4,036 ± 171 vs. 4,258 ± 152 mmHg/s; and HHR, 3,974 ± 160 vs. 4,540 ± 259 mmHg/s; P < 0.05]. HHR hearts were more susceptible to I/R (I = 25 min, and R = 30 min) injury than NHR hearts (decreased functional recovery, and increased lactate dehydrogenase efflux). Female NHR hearts exhibited a significantly greater recovery (dP/dtmax) post-I/R relative to male NHR (95.0 ± 12.2% vs. 60.5 ± 9.4%), a resistance to postischemic dysfunction not evident in female HHR (29.0 ± 5.6% vs. 25.9 ± 6.3%). Ventricular fibrillation was suppressed, and expression levels of Akt and ERK1/2 were selectively elevated in female NHR hearts. Thus the occurrence of load-independent primary cardiac hypertrophy undermines the intrinsic resistance of female hearts to I/R insult, with the observed abrogation of endogenous cardioprotective signaling pathways consistent with a potential mechanistic role in this loss of protection.

The time sustained during a graded cycle exercise is ~10% longer in an upright compared with a supine posture. However, during constant-load cycling this effect is unknown. Therefore, we tested the postural effect on the performance of high-intensity constant-load cycling. Twenty-two active subjects (11 men, 11 women) performed two graded tests (one upright, one supine), and of those 22, 10 subjects (5 men, 5 women) performed three high-intensity constant-load tests (one upright, two supine). To test the postural effect on performance at the same absolute intensity, during the upright and one of the supine constant-load tests subjects cycled at 80% of the peak power output achieved during the upright graded test. To test the postural effect on performance at the same relative intensities, during the second supine test subjects cycled at 80% of the peak power output achieved during the supine graded test. Exercise time on the graded and absolute intensity constant-load tests for all subjects was greater (P<0.05) in the upright compared with supine posture (17.9±3.5 vs. 16.1±3.1 min for graded; 13.2±8.7 vs. 5.2±1.9 min for constant-load). This postural effect at the same absolute intensity was larger in men (19.4±8.5 upright vs. 6.6±1.6 supine, P<0.001) than women (7.1±2 upright vs. 3.9±1.4 supine, P>0.05) and it was correlated (P<0.05) with both the difference in VO2 between positions during the first minute of exercise (r=0.67) and the height of the subjects (r=0.72). In conclusion, there is a very large postural effect on performance during constant-load cycling exercise and this effect is significantly larger in men than women.

This study reports results from the first International Body Project (IBP-I), which surveyed 7,434 individuals in 10 major world regions about body weight ideals and body dissatisfaction. Participants completed the female Contour Drawing Figure Rating Scale (CDFRS) and self-reported their exposure to Western and local media. Results indicated there were significant cross-regional differences in the ideal female figure and body dissatisfaction, but effect sizes were small across highsocioeconomic-status (SES) sites. Within cultures, heavier bodies were preferred in low-SES sites compared to high-SES sites in Malaysia and South Africa (ds = 1.94-2.49) but not in Austria. Participant age, body mass index (BMI), and Western media exposure predicted body weight ideals. BMI and Western media exposure predicted body dissatisfaction among women. Our results show that body dissatisfaction and desire for thinness is commonplace in high-SES settings across world regions, highlighting the need for international attention to this problem.

Civilian endurance has again become a significant issue in understanding the nature of the First World War, especially since so much emphasis has returned to questions of consent and commitment in making and sustaining the conflict. Fundamental to that enquiry is an acknowledgement of the reality and legitimacy of the sentiments that drove individuals and communities to support the war. By extension, this also implies a need to understand the limits of that commitment, and of the capacity to endure the strains of war. This chapter probes civilian endurance through an examination of Australian families’ experiences of war and separation. It argues that persistent anxiety over loved ones at the front consumed individuals’ emotional resources and, even among the most patriotic Australians, tested commitment to the war.

This paper consists of two parallel and interweaving investigations regarding the UFO phenomenon and its origins with respect to observational astronomy. First, as a young child, I was fascinated with astronomy and would spend many hours with my toy telescope, viewing blurred images of the night sky. I also held a deep belief in UFOs and was committed to seeing and recording a flying saucer for myself. This led me to fabricate my own UFO photographs and from these I developed a critical relationship with photography as a means of documentation and as a medium of illusionary projection. This paper is therefore partly personal and reflexive.The second thread investigates the advent of the UFO phenomenon as a consequence of nineteenth and early twentieth century developments in observational astronomy, and the speculative theories regarding life on Mars that emerged during this period. I will be considering the work of Giovanni Schiaparelli, Percival Lowell and the writings of Carl Jung. I will be arguing that the primary force that led towards a belief in flying saucers emerged from the speculations and misinterpretations of certain astronomical observations, together with a desire to project upon that which was observed, rather than to see that which was there.

Background Early mobilisation after stroke is thought to contribute to the eff ects of stroke-unit care; however, the intervention is poorly defined and not underpinned by strong evidence. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of frequent, higher dose, very early mobilisation with usual care after stroke.MethodsWe did this parallel-group, single-blind, randomised controlled trial at 56 acute stroke units in five countries. Patients (aged ≥18 years) with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, first or recurrent, who met physiological criteriawere randomly assigned (1:1), via a web-based computer generated block randomisation procedure (block size of six), to receive usual stroke-unit care alone or very early mobilisation in addition to usual care. Treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator was allowed. Randomisation was stratified by study site and stroke severity. Patients, outcome assessors, and investigators involved in trial and data management were masked to treatment allocation. The primary outcome was a favourable outcome 3 months after stroke, defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 0–2. We did analysis on an intention-to-treat basis. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, number ACTRN12606000185561.FindingsBetween July 18, 2006, and Oct 16, 2014, we randomly assigned 2104 patients to receive either very early mobilisation (n=1054) or usual care (n=1050); 2083 (99%) patients were included in the 3 month follow-up assessment. 965 (92%) patients were mobilised within 24 h in the very early mobilisation group compared with 623 (59%) patients in the usual care group. Fewer patients in the very early mobilisation group had a favourable outcome than those in the usual care group (n=480 [46%] vs n=525 [50%]; adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·73, 95% CI 0·59–0·90; p=0·004). 88 (8%) patients died in the very early mobilisation group compared with 72 (7%) patients in the usual care group (OR 1·34, 95% CI 0·93–1·93, p=0·113). 201 (19%) patients in the very early mobilisation group and 208 (20%) of those in the usual care group had a non-fatal serious adverse event, with no reduction in immobility-related complications with very early mobilisation.InterpretationFirst mobilisation took place within 24 h for most patients in this trial. The higher dose, very early mobilisation protocol was associated with a reduction in the odds of a favourable outcome at 3 months. Early mobilisation after stroke is recommended in many clinical practice guidelines worldwide, and our findings should affect clinical practice by refi ning present guidelines; however, clinical recommendations should be informed by future analyses of dose–response associations.
