With the advent of semiconductor process and EDA tools technology, IC designers can integrate more functions. However, to reduce the demand of time-to-market and tackle the increasing complexity of SoC, the need of fast prototyping and testing is growing. Taking advantage of deep submicron technology, modern FPGAs provide a fast and low-cost prototyping with large logic resources and high performance. So the hardware is mapped onto an emulation platform based on FPGA that mimics the behaviour of SOC. In this paper we use FPGA as a system on chip which is then used for image compression by 2-D DCT respectively and proposed SoC for image compression using soft core Microblaze. The JPEG standard defines compression techniques for image data. As a consequence, it allows to store and transfer image data with considerably reduced demand for storage space and bandwidth. From the four processes provided in the JPEG standard, only one, the baseline process is widely used. Proposed SoC for JPEG compression has been implemented on FPGA Spartan-6 SP605 evaluation board using Xilinx platform studio, because field programmable gate array have reconfigurable hardware architecture. Hence the JPEG image with high speed and reduced size can be obtained at low risk and low power consumption of about 0.699W. The proposed SoC for image compression is evaluated at 83.33MHz on Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA.

The study of interactions between organic biomolecules and semiconducting surfaces is an important consideration for the design and fabrication of field-effect-transistor (FET) biosensor. This paper demonstrates DNA detection by employing a double-gate field effect transistor (DGFET). In addition, an investigation of sensitivity and signal to noise ratio (SNR) is carried out for different values of analyte concentration, buffer ion concentration, pH, reaction constant, etc. Sensitivity, which is indicated by the change of drain current, increases non-linearly after a specific value (∼1nM) of analyte concentration and decreases non-linearly with buffer ion concentration. However, sensitivity is linearly related to the fluidic gate voltage. The drain current has a significant effect on the positive surface group (-NH2) compared to the negative counterpart (-OH). Furthermore, the sensor has the same response at a particular value of pH (5.76) irrespective of the density of surface group, although it decreases with pH value. The signal to noise ratio is improved with higher analyte concentrations and receptor densities.

A highly programmable electro-mechanical surface is developed using an effective array of individual pins arranged in a gridform. Each pin can be independently raised or lowered to create a wide range of contoured surfaces. It was found that as the number of elements increased. high levels of accuracy could still be achieved. however the required processing power increased logarithmically. This finding was attributed to the large amounts of data being passed. and subsequently led to a second focus; various methods of data management and flow control techniques within large-scale multi elemental systems. Results indicated a large potential for highly programmable surfaces within industry to provide a computer controlled surface for rapid prototyping. The research also revealed the potential for such a device to be used as a HID within Haptic applications.

Creating a highly programmable surface operating at relatively high speed and in real time is an area of research with many challenges. Such a system has applications in the field of optical telescopes, product manufacturing, and giant 3D-screens and billboards for advertising and artwork. This paper covers certain aspects of a keynote presentation at ISDT 2010 including system design, modularity, programmability and the system control intelligence. An overview of the system architecture, actuator design, electronics and distributed control will provide an insight into how the system is controlled and self-tuned for a number of applications. A simulation environment that has been developed to streamline system reconfiguration will also be presented, demonstrating translation of complex mathematical functions into 3D shapes virtually before being displayed on the physical surface.

A polyelectrolyte/polymeric semiconductor core/shell structure is developed for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)/polyaniline core/shell nanofibers via electrospinning and solution-phase selective polymerization. The polyelectrolyte does not work as a gate dielectric, but can provide an internal modulation from the nanointerface of the 1D core/shell nanostructure. The transistor devices display very high mobilities.

This research has explored methods for developing a large interactive dynamic 3D surface using an array of interconnected pneumatically actuated cylinders. People can control the surface using body movement, sound or pre-programmed sequences. The main contribution is a method for accurately positioning cylinders without the need for position feedback.

Partial shading is one of the unavoidable complications in the field of solar power generation. Although the most common approach in increasing a photovoltaic (PV) array’s efficiency has always been to introduce a bypass diode to the said array, this poses another problem in the form of multi-peaks curves whenever the modules are partially shaded. To further complicate matters, most conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking methods develop errors under certain circumstances (for example, they detect the local Maximum Power Point (MPP) instead of the global MPP) and reduce the efficiency of PV systems even further. Presently, much research has been undertaken to improve upon them. This study aims to employ an evolutionary algorithm technique, also known as particle swarm optimization, in MPP detection.
