Average number of fiber-to-fiber contacts in a fibrous structure is a prerequisite to investigate the mechanical, optical and transport properties of stochastic nanomicrofibrous networks. In this research work, based on theoretical analysis presented for the estimation of the number of contacts between fibers in electrospun random multilayer nanofibrous assembles, experimental verification for theoretical dependence of fiber diameter and network porosity on the fiber to fiber contacts has been provided. The analytical model formulated is compared with the existing theories to predict the average number of fiber contacts of nanofiber structures. The effect of fiber diameters and network porosities on average number of fiber contacts of nano-microfiber mats has been investigated. A comparison is also made between the experimental and theoretical number of inter-fiber contacts of multilayer electrospun random nanomicrofibrous networks. It has been found that both the fiber diameter and the network porosity have significant effects on the properties of fiber-to-fiber contacts.

Ten anionic compounds, including four acidic dyes, were used to dope polypyrrole powder. The effects of the dopants on density, optical absorption and conductivity of the polypyrroles were studied. The presence of the dopant in the conducting polymer matrix was verified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Density function theory (DFT) simulation was used to understand the effect of the dopants on the solid structure, optical absorption and energy band structures. Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole yielded the highest conductivity. The dye-doped polypyrrole showed an enhancement in its UV–vis optical absorption.

Over the past two decades there has been an increasing focus on doing research with and for consumers rather than on consumers. Research that is collaborative and inclusive has been called for by people with disabilities. People with disabilities are a group of telecommunications consumers who are disadvantaged because of social barriers and access issues with equipment, services and information. In this paper, the benefits and challenges of collaborative (e.g. participatory, participatory action, emancipatory) research with these consumers and the processes that can facilitate inclusive and accountable research outcomes are addressed. Throughout the paper, four questions will be explored: Who determines which research issues are explored and the methods that are used? What is the level of consumer involvement in the research process? How can academics and government ensure that consumer-focused research is inclusive and participatory? How, and to whom, should research results be made available?

In the first part of the paper, the perspectives on consumer research by people with disabilities are presented. Respect for and appreciation of consumers' views underpins the philosophical stance needed by researchers and funding bodies before serious engagement in empowering, person-centred research can be successful.

In the second part of the paper, there is a focus on defining the features of collaborative research approaches. Participatory research, participatory action research, and emancipatory research are variations that incorporate differing levels of consumer involvement. Each of these, however, embrace shifts in philosophy and methods away from more traditional 'scientific' research. Such changes result in a greater sense of inclusion and project ownership by consumers.

The third part of the paper addresses some of the issues associated with collaborative research for consumers with disabilities, for academic researchers, and for government funding bodies. Differing understandings of the social nature of disablement influence attitudes toward consumer involvement and are demonstrated in the choice of research questions, project aims, and the methodologies used. Differing agendas are reflected in reactions to the traditional project requirements and processes of government, the preferred research methodologies of researchers, and the perceived accountability of researchers or government for the dissemination and sharing of research results. The challenges to successful engagement with consumers in collaborative research have been identified in the literature and a number of strategies recommended (Barnes, 2003; Clear, 1999; Mercer, 2002; Oliver, 1992, 1997; Zarb, 1997). Application of inclusive strategies by researchers and funding bodies is essential for positive change and inclusive, empowering outcomes.

The paper concludes with a case study of a DCITA-funded research project. The project is evaluated using participatory/emancipatory research criteria modified from Zarb (1992) and addresses consumer, researcher, and funding body participation. The four questions used in the discussion of the paper are applied to this particular project. In addition, the benefits and learnings from the project will be compared with the outcomes desired by consumers who espouse collaborative research approaches.

There is considerable evidence of general student scepticism regarding the purpose of team assignments and high levels of concern for the fairness of assessment procedures when all members of a team receive the same grade. Some educators are similarly anxious about not only the validity of team grades, but also the need to assess ongoing team processes in addition to the final assignment product. This paper offers self-andpeer-assessment (SAPA) as a fair, valid and reliable method of producing information about ongoing team processes. The paper examines a pilot study investigating an online SAPA tool originally developed for a small class of architecture students. This tool is adapted for use for by students completing team assignment in two further architecture design units and for a very large class of 800 business communication students. The sample students studied on four campuses, as well as in off campus and offshore modes. The paper focuses on the initial stages of the study to demonstrate how researchers from very different backgrounds collaborated to adapt the online tool and implement a pilot study whilst maintaining both comparability of assessment and integrity of research design.

In this study, mechanochemical processing has been used to manufacture a nanoparticulate powder of ZnO with a controlled particle size and minimal hard agglomeration. The suitability of this ZnO powder for use as either a photocatalyst or an optically transparent UV-filter was evaluated by comparing its optical and photocatalytic properties with those of three commercially available powders that were synthesised by chemical precipitation and flame pyrolysis. The ZnO powder synthesised by mechanochemical processing was found to exhibit high optical transparency and low photocatalytic activity per unit of surface area, which indicates that it is suitable for use in optically transparent UV-filters.

Wool fabrics are often treated under conditions of varying pH in dyeing and finishing processes. It is known that in air the dimensions of wool fabrics change with the amount of fiber swelling at different regain. In this work, it has been shown that a similar relationship between fiber swelling and fabric dimensions existed in water at different pH values. The diameters of Merino and Corriedale wool fibers in water at different pH values were measured with an OFDA 2000 fiber diameter analyzer, fitted with a specially constructed accessory liquid cell. The results showed that the mean diameters of swollen wool fibers in water varied with pH. Minimum swelling was obtained in the range pH 5-7. It was found that the dimensions of wool fabric in water were dependent on the pH. The changes in fiber diameter in water could be attributed to changes in ionic interactions between charged acid and basic groups in wool protein with variations in pH.

Despite the perennial nature of the problem of gratuities in considerations of police ethics, many prior analyses of this issue have rested on anecdotal, piecemeal or hypothetical considerations.. This paper draws on a unique sample of actual complaint cases involving gratuities, providing evidence of a range of public concerns about the problem. Gratuities are analysed and contextualised by reference to the concept of conflict of interest, which draws attention to the potential for the performance of public duty to be tainted in fact or appearance. In either case, public trust in the integrity of the police is damaged, giving rise to "political optics" as a key problem with gratuities.  The paper argues that an accountability ethos must be developed to promote active responsibility and a preparedness to prioritise the public interest in policing.

Aluminum nitride (AƖN) nanostructures have shown novel physical and chemical properties that are essential for technological applications. We report a vapor-solid growth of novel three-dimensional (3D) A1N urchin-like nanostmcture in DC arc plasma via the direct reaction between Al vapor and N2 gas without any catalyst or template. The as-prepared 3D A1N nanostructures which have urchin-like shapes consist of numerous microdaggers with sharp tips and lengths of up to several micrometers and widths of 0.5-2 µm. A growth mechanism of A1N nanostructures with urchin shapes was suggested and explained in detail. The optical properties of the AƖN nanostructures with urchin shapes were also studied with photoluminescence spectrum, which reveals a broad emission, suggesting potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices.

Novel AlN nanostructures with tunable building units of the architectures have been successfully synthesized without any catalyst or template; the subsequent photoluminescence (PL) indicates that the optical properties of the AlN nanostructures can be adjusted by tuning the architectures.
