This thesis is a compilation of eighty publications on analytical, experimental and numerical studies on the mechanical, tribological and corrosion behaviour of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The models based on the interface between matrix and reinforcement behaviour help accurate prediction of density and locked up hysterysis-strain in the composites at elevated temperatures.

Slab–girder structures composed of steel girder and reinforced concrete slab are widely used in buildings and bridges in the world. Their advantages are largely based on the composite action through the shear connection between slab and girder. In order to assess the integrity of this kind of structures, numerous vibration-based damage identification methods have been proposed. In this study, a scaled composite slab–girder model was constructed in the laboratory. Some removable shear connectors were specially designed and fabricated to connect the girder and slab that were cast separately. Then, a two-stage experiment including both static and vibration tests was performed. In the first stage, vibration tests were conducted under different damage scenarios, where a certain number of shear connectors at certain locations were removed step by step. In the second stage, two sets of hydraulic loading equipment were used to apply four-point static loads in the test. The loads are increased gradually until concrete slab cracked. The loading histories as well as deflections at different points of the beam are recorded. Vibration test was carried out before and after concrete cracking. Experimental results show that the changes of mode shapes and relative displacement between slab and girder may be two promising parameters for damage identification of slab–girder structures.

Microcompression tests were performed on monolithic Cu and Fe thin films and a Cu/Fe multilayer that had each individual layer of 200 nm thick, to understand the mechanical behaviour of multiple nanolayers. The micron-sized pillars were prepared by focused-ion beam (FIB) technique and compressed with a flat punch in a nanoindenter. The flow curves of the monolithic Cu and Fe thin films and Cu/Fe multilayer were extracted from the microcompression tests. The monolithic Cu thin film bulges in the top region of the pillar, while the Fe thin film cracks due to its columnar grain structure. For the Cu/Fe multilayer, the ductile Cu layers accommodate the majority of plastic deformation upon compression, while cracking in the Fe layers leads to the failure of the multilayer. Finite element models of microcompression tests were also developed to provide insights into the deformation behaviours of the multilayer and monolithic thin films. © 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. There is renewed optimism regarding the use of natural experimental studies to generate evidence as to the effectiveness of population health interventions. Natural experimental studies capitalise on environmental and policy events that alter exposure to certain social, economic or environmental factors that influence health. Natural experimental studies can be useful for examining the impact of changes to 'upstream' determinants, which may not be amenable to controlled experiments. However, while natural experiments provide opportunities to generate evidence, they often present certain conceptual and methodological obstacles. Population health interventions that alter the physical or social environment are usually administered broadly across populations and communities. The breadth of these interventions means that variation in exposure, uptake and impact may be complex. Yet many evaluations of natural experiments focus narrowly on identifying suitable 'exposed' and 'unexposed' populations for comparison. In this paper, we discuss conceptual and analytical issues relating to defining and measuring exposure to interventions in this context, including how recent advances in technology may enable researchers to better understand the nature of population exposure to changes in the built environment. We argue that when it is unclear whether populations are exposed to an intervention, it may be advantageous to supplement traditional impact assessments with observational approaches that investigate differing levels of exposure. We suggest that an improved understanding of changes in exposure will assist the investigation of the impact of complex natural experiments in population health.

The brain is a lipid-rich organ containing mostly complex polar  phospholipids, sphingolipids, gangliosides and cholesterol. These lipids are involved in the structure and function of cell membranes in the brain. The glycerophospholipids in the brain contain a high proportion of  polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) derived from the essential fatty acids, linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. The main PUFA in the brain are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, all cis 4,7,10,13,16,19-22:6) derived from the omega 3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid (AA, all cis 5,8,11,14-20:4) and docosatetraenoic acid (all cis 7,10,13,16-22:4), both derived from the omega 6 fatty acid, linoleic acid. Experimental studies in animals have shown that diets lacking omega 3 PUFA lead to substantial disturbances in neural function, which in most circumstances can be restored by the inclusion of omega 3 PUFA in the diet. In the past 10 years there has been an emerging interest in treating neuropsychological  disorders (depression and schizophrenia) with omega 3 PUFA. This paper discusses the clinical studies conducted in the area of depression and omega 3 PUFA and the possible mechanisms of action of these PUFA. It is clear from the literature that DHA is involved in a variety of processes in neural cells and that its role is far more complex than simply influencing cell membrane properties.

The performances of three advanced non-linear controllers are analyzed for the optimal set point tracking of styrene free radical polymerization (FRP) in batch reactors. The three controllers are the artificial neural network-based MPC (NN-MPC), the artificial fuzzy logic controller (FLC) as well as the generic model controller (GMC). A recently developed hybrid model (Hosen et al., 2011a. Asia-Pac. J. Chem. Eng. 6(2), 274) is utilized in the control study to design and tune the proposed controllers. The optimal minimum temperature profiles are determined using the Hamiltonian maximum principle. Different types of disturbances are introduced and applied to examine the stability of controller performance. The experimental studies revealed that the performance of the NN-MPC is superior to that of FLC and GMC. © 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Mechanical ventilation of patients in intensive care units is common practice. Artificial airways are utilised to facilitate ventilation and the endotracheal tube (ETT) is most commonly used for this purpose. The ETT must be stabilised to optimise ventilation and avoid displacement or unplanned extubation. Tube movement is a major factor in causing airway trauma. A destabilised tube can cause fatal complications. A systematic review was conducted to identify and analyse the best available evidence on ETT stabilisation to determine which stabilisation method resulted in reduced tube displacement and the least amount of unplanned or accidental extubations. The types of stabilisations included one or a combination of the following methods: twill or cotton tape, adhesive tape, gauze, or a manufactured device. All relevant randomised controlled and quasi-experimental studies of ETT stabilisation practices, identified through electronic and hand searching, were assessed for inclusion in the study. One published randomised controlled trial and six published quasi-experimental studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were retrieved. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers. Results of the systematic review showed that no single method of ETT stabilisation could be identified as superior for minimising tube displacement and unplanned or accidental extubations. Rigorous randomised controlled trials with clearly identified and described ETT stabilisation methods are required to establish best practice. In addition, comparative research to evaluate cost effectiveness and nursing time requirements would also be of significant benefit to critical care nursing practice.

Numerous experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the collapse of tubular metallic crash structures under axial compression. Some simple theoretical models have been developed but these often assume one type of progressive collapse, which is not always representative of the real situation. Finite Element (FE) models, when further refined, have the potential to predict the actual collapse mode and how it influences the load-displacement and energy absorption characteristics. This paper describes an FE modelling investigation with the explicit code LS−DYNA. An automatic mesh generation programme written by the authors is used to set up shell and solid element tube models. Mesh specification issues and features relating to the contact and friction models are discussed in detail. The crush modes, load-deflection characteristics and energy absorption values found in the simulations are compared with a reasonable degree of correlation to those observed in a physical testing programme; however, improvements are still required.

Ramipril is a well-knownAngiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitorwhich inhibits conversion ofinactive angiotensin I to active angiotensin II. Experimental studies have shown thatACE inhibitors administered chronicallybefore acuteMImight limitmyocardial infarct size, improve cardiac function and prevent cardiac hypertrophy [1, 2]. The Chinese herb, Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM), has been widely and successfully usedmainly for anginapectoris,MI and stroke [3]. Compared to ramipril, however, there is very limited biochemical information availableto demonstrate themechanismsofSMs
cardio-protective effects. This study thus investigates the possible
biochemical and molecularmechanisms ofsuch effects ofSMin Wistar rats in comparison with those oframipril.

This paper reviews our recent studies on z-pinning of composite laminates. The contents include theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on the Mode I and Mode II z-pinned delamination growth and the corresponding bridging laws. Test methods to evaluate the z-pin bridging law will be discussed. Comparisons of experimental results and theoretical predictions for the z-pinned double-cantilever-beam (DCB) subjected to mode I delamination with a pre-determined bridging law are provided to confirm the reliability of the methods. A parametric study by finite element method (FEM) is presented for both Mode I and Mode II z-pinned delaminations. In addition, the effect of loading rate on z-pinned DCB delamination and the bridging effect of z-pinning on the buckling of composite laminates are also given.

For most data stream applications, the volume of data is too huge to be stored in permanent devices or to be thoroughly scanned more than once. It is hence recognized that approximate answers are usually sufficient, where a good approximation obtained in a timely manner is often better than the exact answer that is delayed beyond the window of opportunity. Unfortunately, this is not the case for mining frequent patterns over data streams where algorithms capable of online processing data streams do not conform strictly to a precise error guarantee. Since the quality of approximate answers is as important as their timely delivery, it is necessary to design algorithms to meet both criteria at the same time. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that allows online processing of streaming data and yet guaranteeing the support error of frequent patterns strictly within a user-specified threshold. Our theoretical and experimental studies show that our algorithm is an effective and reliable method for finding frequent sets in data stream environments when both constraints need to be satisfied.

The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis was formulated 12 years ago in an attempt to offer a proximate mechanism by which female choice of males could be explained by endocrine control of honest signalling. The hypothesis suggested that testosterone has a dual effect in males of controlling the development of sexual signals while causing immunosuppression. Our purpose in this review is to examine the empirical evidence to date that has attempted to test the hypothesis, and to conduct a meta-analysis on two of the assumptions of the hypothesis, that testosterone reduces immunocompetence and increases parasitism, to ascertain any statistical trend in the data. There is some evidence to suggest that testosterone is responsible for the magnitude of trait expression or development of sexual traits, but this is by no means conclusive. The results of many studies attempting to find evidence for the supposed immunosuppressive qualities of testosterone are difficult to interpret since they are observational rather than experimental. Of the experimental studies, the data obtained are ambiguous, and this is reflected in the result of the meta-analysis. Overall, the meta-analysis found a significant suppressive effect of testosterone on immunity, in support of the hypothesis, but this effect disappeared when we controlled for multiple studies on the same species. There was no effect of testosterone on direct measures of immunity, but it did increase ectoparasite abundance in several studies, in particular in reptiles. A funnel analysis indicated that the results were robust to a publication bias. Alternative substances that interact with testosterone, such as glucocorticoids, may be important. Ultimately, a greater understanding is required of the complex relationships that exist both within and between the endocrine and immune systems and their consequences for mate choice decision making.
