This letter addresses the issue of joint space-time trellis decoding and channel estimation in time-varying fading channels that are spatially and temporally correlated. A recursive space-time receiver which incorporates per-survivor processing (PSP) and Kalman filtering into the Viterbi algorithm is proposed. This approach generalizes existing work to the correlated fading channel case. The channel time-evolution is modeled by a multichannel autoregressive process, and a bank of Kalman filters is used to track the channel variations. Computer simulation results show that a performance close to the maximum likelihood receiver with perfect channel state information (CSI) can be obtained. The effects of the spatial correlation on the performance of a receiver that assumes independent fading channels are examined.

This paper addresses the problem of the design of a precoder for multiple transmit antenna communication systems with spatially and temporally correlated fading channels. Using the theories of matrix differential calculus, the paper derives a precoder for unitary space-time codes that can exploit the spatio-temporal correlation in the time-varying fading channels. The design criterion is based on minimizing the mean square error of the channel estimates. Computer simulation results show that a significant performance gain can be achieved by using the designed precoder.

Differential space-time modulation (DSTM) techniques developed for multi-antenna systems allow the receiver to detect the transmitted signal without the knowledge of the fading channels. It can be viewed as an extension of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) in single antenna systems. In this paper, we derived the pairwise error probability upper bound of differential space-time coded systems with spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the performance analysis, we develop a novel DSTM scheme which can exploit the spatial correlation in the fading channels. It is found that by carefully designing the initial transmitted signal matrix, the performance of the differential space-time coded systems can be significantly improved.

This paper describes the effects of applying coatings of an acrylic polymer containing nanoparticles of zinc oxide (ZnO) on the fading rate in artificial sunlight of polyester fabrics dyed with disperse dyes containing anthraquinone and benzopyran chromophores. Factors affecting the transparency and UV absorbance of the coatings are discussed. Removing the UV component of sunlight with ZnO nanoparticles markedly decreased the fading rate of the dyes, provided the polymer/ZnO film was not in direct contact with the fabric. When the treatment was applied directly to the fabrics, however, the protection against colour fading was different for the two dyes studied. Whereas the rate of colour fading of a benzopyran dye, of relatively low lightfastness, was decreased by the polymer-ZnO film, the treatment increased the fading rate of the dye of higher lightfastness, based on anthraquinone. This effect has been attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when ZnO is exposed to UV. The effect of decreasing the photoactivity of ZnO by doping with manganese has been examined. For the benzopyran dye, the UV protection was greatly increased, whereas a much smaller improvement was found for the anthraquinone-based dye.

© 2002-2012 IEEE. In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem for two-way multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication systems in frequency-selective fading environments. We apply the method of superimposed channel training to estimate the individual channel state information (CSI) of the first-hop and second-hop links for two-way MIMO relay systems with frequency-selective fading channels. In this algorithm, a relay training sequence is superimposed on the received signals at the relay node to assist the estimation of the second-hop channel matrices. The optimal structure of the source and relay training sequences is derived to minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of channel estimation. Moreover, the optimal power allocation between the source and relay training sequences is derived to improve the performance of channel estimation. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the performance of the proposed superimposed channel training algorithm for two-way MIMO relay systems in frequency-selective fading environments.

This letter addresses the problem of the design of a precoder for multiple transmit antenna communication systems with spatially and temporally correlated fading channels. By using the asymptotic (high signal-to-noise ratio) mean-square error of the channel estimates, the letter derives a precoder for unitary space-time codes that can exploit the spatiotemporal correlation in the time-varying fading channels. Simulation results illustrate that significant performance gains can be achieved by using the new precoder.

This paper describes the effect on the fading of dyed polyester fabrics in artificial sunlight, when the Ultra Violet (UV) component of the radiation was blocked by coating the fabric with zinc oxide nanoparticles, dispersed in an acrylic polymer. Zinc oxide is photoactive and generates superoxide and hydroxyl radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species; ROS) when irradiated with UV in the presence of oxygen and water. The results for the four dyes studied show that different dye chromophores interact differently with ROS. Selection of dyes with anti oxidant properties or addition of other anti oxidants may reduce the adverse effects of ROS

This work has used two lightboxes with Philips 500 W MBTF lamps for a comparative trial on the photoyellowing evaluation of untreated wool fabrics under dry and wet conditions. An investigation was made to account for different trends of photoyellowing of the same wool fabric when irradiated by the two lightboxes. The fabric specimens irradiated in one lamp experienced increasing yellowing with irradiation time while specimens from the same wool fabric but irradiated under the other lamp manifested no noticeable color change. These differences are attributed to the susceptibility of wool to small spectral differences between the two MBTF lamps. Furthermore, the color fading results obtained from the commonly used blue wool standard (BWS) references from L1 to L3 show that these reference materials could not effectively reveal changes caused by the spectral differences in two MBTF lamps. These results have important implications for conducting accelerated weathering tests on spectrum-sensitive textile materials, and considerable care should be taken when using BWSs to ensure reliable and consistent irradiation results.
