A 0.79C-1.5Si-1.98Mn-0.98Cr-0.24Mo-1.06Al-1.58Co (wt%) steel was isothermally heat treated at 350°C bainitic transformation temperature for 1 day to form fully bainitic structure with nano-layers of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite, while a 0.26C-1.96Si-2Mn-0.31Mo (wt%) steel was subjected to a successive isothermal heat treatment at 700°C for 300 min followed by 350°C for 120 min to form a hybrid microstructure consisting of ductile ferrite and fine scale bainite. The dislocation density and morphology of bainitic ferrite, and retained austenite characteristics such as size, and volume fraction were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy. It was found that bainitic ferrite has high dislocation density for both steels. The retained austenite characteristics and bainite morphology were affected by composition of steels. Atom Probe Tomography (APT) has the high spatial resolution required for accurate determination of the carbon content of the bainitic ferrite and retained austenite, the solute distribution between these phases and calculation of the local composition of fine clusters and particles that allows to provide detailed insight into the bainite transformation of the steels. The carbon content of bainitic ferrite in both steels was found to be higher compared to the para-equilibrium level of carbon in ferrite. APT also revealed the presence of fine C-rich clusters and Fe-C carbides in bainitic ferrite of both steels.

One set of composite laminates was manufactured from bi-directional carbon fibre woven cloth pre-impregnated with epoxy resin and used to establish experimental techniques. Another, similar set was used for extensive data collection. One other set of laminates, manufactured from uni-directional carbon fibre, was also subjected to extensive tests to represent a different material. The results give the pre and post characterizations of repaired composite materials; outlining at each stage the losses and gains of structural strength and stiffness and discusses the difficulties experienced.

Theoretical solutions, finite element models, and experimental techniques are developed for three major sheet metal forming operations: bending (pure bending and cyclic bending), die bending, and deep drawing. These have been applied to two different commercial quality cold-rolled steels, one stainless steel, and one magnesium alloy.

The nature of the species in solution plays a major role on the effectiveness of the corrosion inhibitor on a steel substrate. The speciation of lanthanum 4-hydroxy cinnamate (La(4OHCin) 3) in solution has been evaluated using experimental techniques composed of potentiodynamic polarisation, immersion tests, nuclear magnetic spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. It is evident that the species in solution are dependent on pH and this impacts the corrosion inhibition mechanism and the efficiency. It was found that at a neutral pH of 5.5 the La(4OH-Cin)3 behaves as a strong anodic inhibitor. Whereas, when the pH shifts to low (pH2.5) and/or high (pH8) the corrosion mechanism changes.

Purpose - The objective of this work was to develop practical experimental techniques for monitoring corrosion in "difficult-to-test" conditions such as corrosion under insulation (CUI).

Design/methodology/approach - An electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode (WBE) method has been used in combination with noise signature analysis for the first time to monitor the penetration of corrosive species under simulated corrosion-under-insulation conditions. Corrosion of aluminium exposed under insulation materials such as rock wool, glass wool, cotton wool and tissue paper has been successfully monitored.

Findings - A typical potential noise signature of a major potential jump from AA1100 WBE was observed which corresponded to the corrosive species reaching the WBE surface in WBE current distribution map. A good correlation between the galvanic current maps and the corroded surface was also observed.

Originality/value - The preliminary results suggest that the proposed novel electrochemical method is capable of monitoring CUI.

Without overindulging in any of them, de Bruyn uses animation, optical illusions, time lapse, solarization, hand tinting, flash frames, refilming and flicker effects, accompanied by a dense atmosphere of word puns, dialogue, primal screams, music and even recycled and letraseted soundtracks.

To fully harness the enormous potential offered by interfaces between graphitic nanostructures and biomolecules, detailed connections between adsorbed conformations and adsorption behaviour are needed. To elucidate these links, a key approach, in partnership with experimental techniques, is molecular simulation. For this, a force-field (FF) that can appropriately capture the relevant physics and chemistry of these complex bio-interfaces, while allowing extensive conformational sampling, and also supporting inter-operability with known biological FFs, is a pivotal requirement. Here, we present and apply such a force-field, GRAPPA, designed to work with the CHARMM FF. GRAPPA is an efficiently implemented polarisable force-field, informed by extensive plane-wave DFT calculations using the revPBE-vdW-DF functional. GRAPPA adequately recovers the spatial and orientational structuring of the aqueous interface of graphene and carbon nanotubes, compared with more sophisticated approaches. We apply GRAPPA to determine the free energy of adsorption for a range of amino acids, identifying Trp, Tyr and Arg to have the strongest binding affinity and Asp to be a weak binder. The GRAPPA FF can be readily incorporated into mainstream simulation packages, and will enable large-scale polarisable biointerfacial simulations at graphitic interfaces, that will aid the development of biomolecule-mediated, solution-based graphene processing and self-assembly strategies.

High-throughput experimental techniques provide a wide variety of heterogeneous proteomic data sources. To exploit the information spread across multiple sources for protein function prediction, these data sources are transformed into kernels and then integrated into a composite kernel. Several methods first optimize the weights on these kernels to produce a composite kernel, and then train a classifier on the composite kernel. As such, these approaches result in an optimal composite kernel, but not necessarily in an optimal classifier. On the other hand, some approaches optimize the loss of binary classifiers and learn weights for the different kernels iteratively. For multi-class or multi-label data, these methods have to solve the problem of optimizing weights on these kernels for each of the labels, which are computationally expensive and ignore the correlation among labels. In this paper, we propose a method called Predicting Protein Function using Multiple K ernels (ProMK). ProMK iteratively optimizes the phases of learning optimal weights and reduces the empirical loss of multi-label classifier for each of the labels simultaneously. ProMK can integrate kernels selectively and downgrade the weights on noisy kernels. We investigate the performance of ProMK on several publicly available protein function prediction benchmarks and synthetic datasets. We show that the proposed approach performs better than previously proposed protein function prediction approaches that integrate multiple data sources and multi-label multiple kernel learning methods. Recent advances in thermoelectrochemical cells, which are being developed for harvesting low grade waste heat, have shown the promise of cobalt bipyridyl salts as the active redox couple. The Seebeck coefficient, Se, of a redox couple determines the open circuit voltage achievable, for a given temperature gradient, across the thermoelectrochemical cell. Thus, the accurate determination of this thermodynamic parameter is key to the development and study of new redox electrolytes. Further, techniques for accurate determination of Se using only one half of the redox couple reduces the synthetic requirements. Here, we compare three different experimental techniques for measuring Se of a cobalt tris(bipyridyl) redox couple in ionic liquid electrolytes. The use of temperature dependent cyclic voltammetry (CV) in isothermal and non-isothermal cells was investigated in depth, and the Se values compared to those from thermo-electromotive force measurements. Within experimental error, the Se values derived from CV methods were found to be in accordance with those obtained from electromotive force (emf) measurements. The applicability of cyclic voltammetry techniques for determining Se when employing only one part of the redox couple was demonstrated.

The Forming Limit Diagram (FLD) is a conventional failure diagram to estimate necking limits of sheet metal for proportional loading conditions. Previous studies reveal that the FLD is not suitable for predicting the influence of nonlinear strain paths. This paper presents methodical comparison among all common available strain path independent strain/stress based limiting criteria. All the strain path independent strain based limiting criteria (Traditional Failure Diagram (TFD), Extended Forming Limit Diagram (XFLD), Extended Stress Ratio Based Forming Limit Diagram (ESRFLD), and Polar Effective Plastic StrainDiagram (PEPSD)) and stress based limiting criteria (Traditional Stress based Failure Diagram (TFSD), Stress Based Forming Limit Diagram (FLSD), Stress Ratio and Stress Based Forming Limit Diagram (SRFLSD), Extended Stress Based Forming Limit Diagram (XFLSD), and Polar Effective Stress Diagram (PESSD)) are approximately path-independent for smaller amount of pre-straining and path dependent for large pre-straining conditions. From advance image correlation technique precisely determination of local strains near necked area is possible today. However direct determination of local stresses near necked area is not possible. Therefore, local stresses and equivalent stress are determined by employing both yield criterion and strain-hardening law. Similarly equivalent strain is calculated by the use of yield criterion. Therefore, the choice of yield criterion has an impact on the results for TFD, XFLD, ESRFLD and PEPSD. However, selections of both yield criterion and strain-hardening law have substantial influence on the results for TFSD, FLSD, SRFLSD, XFLSD and PESSD. The inherent calculation error can be minimized by generation of experimental data for each material and then selection of representable yield criterion and strain-hardening law. Improvement of experimental techniques and generation of rigorous material data bank in various strain paths may help researchers to diagnose and resolve the issue. TFD, TFSD and XFLSD have inherent variables to take care the effect of through thickness stress, however rigorous experimental verification is needed before the field application.

The subjective effects and therapeutic potential of the shamanic practice of journeying is well known. However, previous research has neglected to provide a comprehensive assessment of the subjective effects of shamanic-like journeying techniques on non-shamans. Shamanic-like techniques are those that demonstrate some similarity to shamanic practices and yet deviate from what may genuinely be considered shamanism. Furthermore, the personality traits that influence individual susceptibility to shamanic-like techniques are unclear. The aim of the present study was, thus, to investigate experimentally the effect of shamanic-like techniques and a personality trait referred to as "ego boundaries" on subjective experience including mood disturbance. Forty-three non-shamans were administered a composite questionnaire consisting of demographic items and a measure of ego boundaries (i.e., the Short Boundary Questionnaire; BQ-Sh). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: listening to monotonous drumming for 15 minutes coupled with one of two sets of journeying instructions; or sitting quietly with eyes closed for 15 minutes. Participants' subjective experience and mood disturbance were retrospectively assessed using the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) and the Profile of Mood States-Short Form, respectively. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between conditions with regard to the PCI major dimensions of visual imagery, attention and rationality, and minor dimensions of imagery amount and absorption. However, the shamanic-like conditions were not associated with a major reorganization of the pattern of subjective experience compared to the sitting quietly condition, suggesting that what is typically referred to as an altered state of consciousness effect was not evident. One shamanic-like condition and the BQ-Sh subscales need for order, childlikeness, and sensitivity were statistically significant predictors of total mood disturbance. Implications of the findings for the anthropology of consciousness are also considered.

This paper summarizes some of our recent results on crystal structure, microstructure, orientation relationship between martensitic variants and crystallographic features of martensitic transformation in Ni-Mn-Ga FSMAs. It was shown that Ni53Mn25Ga22 has a tetragonal I4/mmm martensitic structure at room temperature. The neighboring martensitic variants in Ni53Mn25Ga22 have a compound twinning relationship with the twinning elements K1={112}, K2={11-2}, η1=<11-1>, η2=<111>, P={1-10} and s=0.379. The ratio of the relative amounts of twins within the same initial austenite grain is ~1.70. The main orientation relationship between austenite and martensite is Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) relationship. Based on the crystallographic phenomenological theory, the calculated habit plane is {0.690 -0.102 0.716}A (5.95° from {101}A), and the magnitude, direction and shear angle of the macroscopic transformation shear are 0.121, <-0.709 0.105 0.698>A (6.04° from <-101>A) and 6.88°, respectively.

Civil infrastructures begin to deteriorate once they are built and used. Detecting the damages in a structure to maintain its safety is a topic that has received considerable attention in the literature in recent years. In vibration-based methods, the first few modes are used to assess the locations and the amount of damage. However, a small number of the global modes are not sufficient to reliably detect minor damage in the structure. Also, a common limitation of these techniques is that they require a high-fidelity model of the structure to start with, which is usually not available. Recently, guided waves (GW) have been found as an effective and efficient way to detect incipient damages due to its capacity of relatively long propagation range as well as its flexibility in selecting sensitive mode-frequency combinations. In this paper, an integrated structural health monitoring test scheme is developed to detect damages in reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Each beam is loaded at the middle span progressively to damage. During each loading step, acoustic emission (AE) method is used as a passive monitoring method to catch the AE signals caused by the crack opening and propagation. After each loading step, vibration tests and guided wave tests are conducted as a combined active monitoring measure. The modal parameters and wave propagation results are used to derive the damage information. Experimental results show that the integrated method is efficient to detect incipient damages in RC structures.

In this paper, we present techniques for inverting sparse, symmetric and positive definite matrices on parallel and distributed computers. We propose two algorithms, one for SIMD implementation and the other for MIMD implementation. These algorithms are modified versions of Gaussian elimination and they take into account the sparseness of the matrix. Our algorithms perform better than the general parallel Gaussian elimination algorithm. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of our technique, we implemented the snake problem using our sparse matrix algorithm. Our studies reveal that the proposed sparse matrix inversion algorithm significantly reduces the time taken for obtaining the solution of the snake problem. In this paper, we present the results of our experimental work.
