Two theorems on conditions for nonexistence and for existence, of built functional observers, from an eigenspace perspective are presented and proved. One more theorem on Functional Observability in terms of constructed products of matrices A,C and L0 is also presented. This theorem provides an easy way to check Functional Observability before proceeding with the design of functional observers. The existence and the nonexistence theorems are used to unify previously reported theorems on Functional Observability by showing their equivalence. The connection between the concept of Functional Observability and the well known concept of State Observability is also presented.

This article presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and design of an unknown input Functional observer. The existence of the observer can be verified by computing a nullspace of a known matrix and testing some matrix rank conditions. The existence of the observer does not require the satisfaction of the observer matching condition (i.e. Equation (16) in Hou and Muller 1992, ‘Design of Observers for Linear Systems with Unknown Inputs’, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 37, 871–875), is not limited to estimating scalar functionals and allows for arbitrary pole placement. The proposed observer always exists when a state observer exists for the unknown input system, and furthermore, the proposed observer can exist even in some instances when an unknown input state observer does not exist.

In the existing literature, the existence conditions and design procedures for scalar functional observers are available for the cases where the observers’ order p is either p=1 or p=(v-1), where v is the observability index of the matrix pair (C,A). Therefore, if an observer with an order p=1 does not exist, the other option is to use a high-order observer with p=(v-1). This paper provides the existence conditions and a design procedure for scalar functional observers of order 0≤p≤2, and demonstrates the presented results with a numerical example. where K, M, E, H and G are constant matrices to be designed. The problem of observing a scalar functional or multi functionals (z(t)∈Rk , k>1) of the state vector has been the subject of numerous papers, and different algorithms have been proposed (see, [1]-[13] and references therein). There are also papers that deal with the order reduction of multi-dimensional functional observers [9,10,12,13]. For scalar functional observers, a well-known Luenberger’s classic result [1] provides an upper bound on the order with p=(v-1). It is interesting to note here that, except for a recent result of Darouach [12,13], little results have been reported on the order reduction for scalar functional observers.

In the existing literature, the existence conditions and design procedures for scalar functional observers are available for the cases where the observers’ order p is either p=1 or p=(v-1), where v is the observability index of the matrix pair (C,A). Therefore, if an observer with an order p=1 does not exist, the other available option is to use a higher order observer with p=(v-1). This paper shows that there exists another option that can be used to design scalar linear functional observers of the order lower than the well-known upper bound (v-1). The paper provides the existence conditions and a design procedure for scalar functional observers of order 0≤ p ≤2, and demonstrates the presented results with a numerical example.

This paper considers the design of a common linear functional observer for two linear time-invariant systems with unknown inputs. A structure for a common observer which only uses the available output information is proposed. Here, for the proposed structure, we show that the simultaneous functional observation problem of two plants is reduced to a problem of designing two observers: the first is a full-order unknown input observer of one of the two systems; the second observer is a common unknown input observer of a system comprises two-connected systems. In general, the existence conditions for the second observer are very difficult to satisfy. This paper thus concludes that it is indeed very difficult to find a common observer for two linear systems with unknown inputs.

This paper presents the design of reduced-order linear functional observers for a class of linear time-delay systems of the neutral-type. The type of the observer proposed in this paper is without internal delay and its order is the same as the number of linear functions to be estimated. First, conditions for the existence of the reduced-order functional observers that are capable of asymptotically estimating any given function of the state vector are derived. Then, based on the newly derived existence conditions, a procedure is given for the determination of the observer parameters. The results derived in this paper include a range of linear systems and extend some existing results of linear functional observers to linear neutral delay systems. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedure.

This paper addresses the problem of estimating simultaneously a linear function of both the state and unknown input of linear system with unknown inputs. By adopting the descriptor system approach, the problem can be conveniently solved. Observers proposed in this paper are of low-order and do not include the derivatives of the outputs. New conditions for the existence of reduced-order observers are derived. A design procedure for the determination of the observer parameters can also be easily derived based on the derived existence conditions

This note deals with the design of reduced-order disturbance decoupled scalar functional observers for linear systems with unknown inputs. Based on a parametric approach, existence conditions are derived and a design procedure for finding reduced-order scalar functional observers is given. The derived existence conditions are relaxed and the procedure can find first-order disturbance decoupled scalar functional observers for some cases where the number of unknown inputs is more than the number of outputs. Also, the observer matching condition, which is the necessary requirement for the design of state observers for linear systems with unknown inputs, is not required. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the attractiveness of the proposed design method.

This paper presents a solution to the problem of designing a common linear functional observer that can observe a partial set of the state vector of two linear systems with unknown inputs. A new structure of a decoupled linear functional observer is proposed for systems subject unknown disturbances, using only the available output information. Existence conditions as well as a design procedure are given for constructing the proposed observer. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the new observer structure.

This note provides a comprehensive treatment on the design of functional observers for linear systems having a time-varying delay in the state variables. The designed observers possess attractive features of being low-order and delay-free and hence they are cost effective and easy to implement. Existence conditions are derived and a design procedure for finding low-order observers is given.

This article considers the problem of estimating a partial set of the state vector and/or unknown input vector of linear systems driven by unknown inputs and time-varying delay in the state variables. Three types of reduced-order observers, namely, observers with delays, observers without internal delays and delay-free observers are proposed in this article. Existence conditions and design procedures are presented for the determination of parameters for each case of observers. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the design procedures.

This paper presents a functional observer scheme using two sliding mode observers in cascade. A coordinate transformation is performed on the system such that existing sliding mode observer theory can be directly applied to achieve functional state estimation. The necessary and sufficient existence conditions for the scheme (in terms of the original system matrices) are also investigated, and they are found to be less stringent than earlier work on functional state estimation using one sliding mode observer; this could have benefits in terms of cost and simplicity. A numerical example verifies the effectiveness of the scheme.

This paper considers the design of reduced-order distributed functional observers for interconnected linear systems with the presence of time delays in the interconnections. Unlike observers which consider only the ideal non-delayed output information transfer, the proposed observer is capable of dealing with delayed output information from geographically separated subsystems. It is shown that by accepting measurement data from other subsystems, the conditions under which an observer exists can be made less conservative. Existence conditions, systematic and a straightforward procedure for the synthesis of the observers are given along with numerical examples illustrating the effectiveness and simplicity of the design algorithm.

This paper reports a new result on the fault detection of dynamical systems by employing only first-order functional observers. Indeed, we show that fault detection can be achieved by utilizing first-order functional observers. The advantages for having such simple structured observers are obvious from the economical and practical points of view as significant cost saving can be achieved. We derive existence conditions and an algorithm for the generation of residual signals to detect faults using firstorder functional observers. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed fault detection scheme. In one of the examples, a two-area interconnected power system with reheat thermal turbines is considered where only a first-order functional observer is designed to detect faults in the power system.

This paper reports a system decomposition that allows the construction of a minimum-order functional observer using a state observer design approach. The system decomposition translates the functional observer design problem to that of a state observer for a smaller decomposed subsystem. Functional observability indices are introduced, and a closed-form expression for the minimum order required for a functional observer is derived in terms of those functional observability indices. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.
