We report an Mg-based metallic glass/titanium interpenetrating phase composite in which constituent phases form a homogeneously interconnected network. The porous titanium constrains shear bands propagation thoroughly and promotes shear bands branching and intersection subsequently. The homogeneous phase distribution promotes regularly distributed local shear deformation and leads to a uniform deformation for the composites. Moreover, the interpenetrating phase structure introduces a mutual-reinforcement between metallic glass and titanium. Therefore, the composite exhibits excellent mechanical performance with compressive fracture strength of 1783 MPa and fracture strain of 31%.<br />

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone was used as the matrix for fiber-reinforced composites to get improved mechanical and thermal properties for the resulting composites. E-glass fiber was used for fiber reinforcement. The morphology, tensile, flexural, impact, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties of the composites were analyzed. The tensile, flexural, and impact properties showed dramatic improvement with the addition of glass fibers. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to obtain the Tg of the cured matrix as well as the composites. The improved thermal stability of the composites was clear from the thermogravimetric analysis. Scanning electron micrographs were taken to understand the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. The values of mechanical properties were compared with modified epoxy resin composite system. Predictive models were applied using various equations to compare the mechanical data obtained theoretically and experimentally.<br />

A novel sensitive humidity nanosensor based on Na1-doped ZnO nanofiber membrane has been prepared via electrospinning and calcination. The product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. During the whole relative humidity (11%&ndash;95%) measurement, the response and recovery time is about 3 and 6 s, respectively, with good linearity, and reproducibility. These remarkable and sensitive sensing performances make our product a good candidate in fabricating humidity sensors.<br />

Au-doped polyacrylonitrile&ndash;polyaniline core&ndash;shell nanofibers are fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent gas-phase polymerization, providing a very high field-effect mobility of up to 11.6 cm2 V&minus;1 s&minus;1. This method is also suitable for other conducting polymers and may eventually lead to a new and simplified fabrication of high-performance polymer organic field-effect transistors.<br />

Chemical mechanical polishing technique is more frequently adopted for planarization in integrated circuit fabrication. The silica abrasives in colloidal state are fabricated with the sodium silicate solution as raw materials through the polymerization reaction among silicic acid molecules. By continuous injection of silicic acid into the preexisting silica solution, the diameter of silica nanoparticles increases. The different sized silica nanoparticles are imaged by scanning electron microscopy, and the dried silica are characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. The polishing test on silicon wafer with as-fabricated silica abrasives shows that the surface flatness reaches 1.1 nm roughness, however, micro scratches are still present in the surface.

Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) are one of the most promising carriers for effective drug delivery due to their large surface area, high volume for drug loading and excellent biocompatibility. However, the non-ionic surfactant templated HMSNs often have a broad size distribution and a defective mesoporous structure because of the difficulties involved in controlling the formation and organization of micelles for the growth of silica framework. In this paper, a novel &quot;Eudragit assisted&quot; strategy has been developed to fabricate HMSNs by utilising the Eudragit nanoparticles as cores and to assist in the self-assembly of micelle organisation. Highly dispersed mesoporous silica spheres with intact hollow interiors and through pores on the shell were fabricated. The HMSNs have a high surface area (670m(2)/g), small diameter (120nm) and uniform pore size (2.5nm) that facilitated the effective encapsulation of 5-fluorouracil within HMSNs, achieving a high loading capacity of 194.5mg(5-FU)/g(HMSNs). The HMSNs were non-cytotoxic to colorectal cancer cells SW480 and can be bioconjugated with Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) for efficient and specific cell internalization. The high specificity and excellent targeting performance of EGF grafted HMSNs have demonstrated that they can become potential intracellular drug delivery vehicles for colorectal cancers via EGF-EGFR interaction.

The remarkable physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) make them potentially excellent lubricants. One of the challenges for using ILs as lubricants is their high cost. In this article, atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanotribology measurements reveal that a 1 mol % solution of IL dissolved in an oil lubricates the silica surface as effectively as the pure IL. The adsorption isotherm shows that the IL surface excess need only be approximately half of the saturation value to prevent surface contact and effectively lubricate the sliding surfaces. Using ILs in this way makes them viable for large-scale applications.

Silica fouling patterns in a sodium&ndash;silica system and the effect of pH on residual dissolved silica concentrations are reported. The unique chemical affinity between sodium and silica (SO4) prevented silica scale deposition on the membrane surface during reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. It was found that high concentrations of sodium in solutions depressed silica solubility to 81&ndash;84 mg L&minus;1 for a maximum NaCl salinity of 60&ndash;65 g L&minus;1. Using a range of membrane examination techniques, it was found that no silica scale formed on the RO membrane surfaces from NaCl solutions free from cations such as Ca, Al and Fe. This was considered to be the result of sodium ions acting as a barrier between polymeric silica and the membrane surface.

It is important to find alternative membranes to the state-of-the-art polybenzimidazole based high temperature proton exchange membranes with high proton conductivity at elevated temperature but with simple synthesis procedures. In this work, inorganic-organic nanostructured hybrid membranes are developed based on a polyethersulfone-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PES-PVP) polymeric matrix with hollow mesoporous silica (HMS), amino-functionalized hollow mesoporous silica (NH2-HMS) and amino-functionalized mesoporous silica (NH2-meso-silica). The composite membranes show a significant increase in proton conductivity and a decrease in the activation energy for proton diffusion in comparison with the phosphoric acid (H3PO4, PA) doped PES-PVP membrane. And the composite membrane with NH2-HMS shows the best performance under the conditions in this study, achieving the highest proton conductivity of 1.52 &times; 10-1 S cm-1 and highest peak power density of 480 mW cm-2 at 180 &deg;C under anhydrous conditions, which is 92.7% higher than that of the PA doped PES-PVP membrane at identical conditions. Such enhancement results from the facilitated proton transportation in the ordered mesoporous channels via the hydrogen bond between the -NH2 groups and H3PO4. The high water retention capability of silica materials with a hollow structure also contributes to the decrease of the activation of proton diffusion. Consequently, the results show promising potential of the NH2-HMS based PES-PVP composite membrane for the elevated temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
